Primer Plant Update

If you want to see retail packaging you can click here: Expansion Ballistics Small Rifle Primers #77 Brass (southerndefense.com)

Mind you, I have no dog in this fight, but last July I bought 5 bricks of Federal Large Pistol off a small manufacturer in North Carolina as he was anticipating commercial products to ship in August. By the end of August he has the same BS runaround that we've all heard, Covid impact, alphabet agency issues, employee training....blah blah blah. For his sake I hope this pans out for him, as he'll see product well before the retailers do. But he's not the "guy who got 'em from a guy" guy. I just reached out to him to see if commercial samples are showing up. If he responds I'll post a comment. At least then I'll be the guy who knows a guy that saw real live not-for-sale packages.
I’m trying to not attack the messenger but I say it’s all bogus. If you recall last January they had primer packaging on their website that of course is well before there was a before.

If I were starting up a new primer manufacturing plant, I would start with those that are currently most short in supply, and expand to those most readily available: start with large rifle, then large rifle magnum, then large pistol, then small pistol, small pistol magnum, then small rifle and finally large pistol magnum, since I would guess those are the least in demand. Seeing as I recently spent almost $140 (including Shipping, hazmat and sales tax) to have a brick of CCI-200’s delivered from Powder Valley, I have to believe decent quality large rifle primers could be manufactured and sold at a decent profit. I still doubt that we will see any from the alleged Texas plant, at least not in 2023.

If you parse his spiel, somewhere around 2:50, what I heard was that some primers were finally produced to mollify anxious investors. That's just my take, may not be so. Somewhere further along as I fast forwarded, he opened a sleeve of primers. I noticed some were face up, some were face down, like the pics I've seen of Servicios and Genix primers. Just saying.

I noticed the primers being both up and down as well. Having said that, I've opened several U.S. primer packages that have had primers face up and down as well. In fact, all brands I've used, except for Federal. Their primers never seem to be face up OR face down!

I haven't noticed that with CCI or Winchester, although I haven't used a lot of Winchesters. Maybe one or two in the odd tray, but most always facing the same way. Maybe I've just been lucky.

LOL Federal. ;)

Then you could afford to buy primers. ;)
I still think primers will go back down to $35 a box!!! I lost interest in primers once I seen them on the shelves. Now I’m slowly waiting for sales!!! but no Sales yet.. Yet is the KEY

With shelves overflowing with ammunition, inflation still raging, and Democrats STILL wanting to SPEND MORE, primers are still scarce and only available online for over $100 per brick, your optimism is only exceeded by our current President’s supporters. Face it, they are never going back to $35. If they eventually get down to $60 and are available locally, you might consider stocking up.

SR primers are $70/1000 and SP primers are $75/1000 with free shipping - https://ammoseek.com/reloading/primers?ekw=cheddite shotshell shotgun&ikw=free shipping

Like in past several component shortages, I anticipate primer prices to keep on falling with increasing inventory.

How low? I do not have a crystal ball but $60/1000 would be nice. I am going to wait before I stock up and when I do, I will post on THR.

I am referring to U.S. made primers, CCI, Federal, Remington (I generally avoid Winchester unless they are a super deal). I might consider the Fiocchi, since I have been happy with their factory ammo. Wish we could still get the Russian Wolf .223 primers. I still have a couple bricks that I got for $15 each years ago. Not sure how good the Ginex or Servicio & Aventuras are, having read mixed reviews. Also miss the Sellier & Bellot primers Cabelas closed out for $20 per brick a few years back. Should have bought more. :(

I promised an update when I heard back from my bud. I'll rewrite it here exactly as I received it yesterday (got busy so I had to delay til now).

"We got our money back a month or so ago. They told us late spring now. But amazingly they started producing ammo and was selling it dirt cheap, made us really wonder what was going on."

No worries...I didn't think or take it as anything personal. I'm just trying to keep a more positive outlook on the developments...as it's the closest thing to putting more domestic primers on the shelves. I'm happy enough getting foreign primers...aside from TulAmmo...hate them, trying to use them all up.

Isn't that the truth. I hated to pay HazMat for ship to store...but at least shipping was free. I still have 2.7 bricks left.
I threw in a bottle of H110 to maximize the benefit.
Never would have thought they'd be charging $90/brick and me actually paying that (desperate for LRP I was, but only bought 5 sleeves).

Thanks
That’s interesting isn’t it? Now I’m wondering what’s up with the guy in the video.

Oh well we all want the same thing. More shooting requires more primers.

I've never had as many primers as I have now...except that I started loading 6.8 SPC and many of my cases, recovered from 5 boxes of Rem factory ammo, require large rifle. When I found some expensive sleeves of Rem 9 1/2 LRP I foolishly elected to buy half, and leave some for others. And that's the last I've seen LRP anywhere. I've managed to get in a lot of new brass from Starline in small rifle for which I have a bounty of SRP and SRPM.

insane profits is what they get! I bought 209 primers for $99 locally, and it didn’t make me feel any better than if I Paid $35. So, Not buying until prices goes below $50! my protest

Fiocchi SR primer $429.99/6000 ($71.66/1000) + free shipping and HazMat - https://americanreloading.com/prime...ifle-primers-free-shipping-hazmat-6000ct.html

Winchester SP primers $83/1000 + free shipping on 5000+ primers - https://www.targetsportsusa.com/winchester-small-pistol-primers-1-1-2-wsp-p-112637.aspx?

Smalls everywhere, as far as the eye can see… but large? Nope. If you see them, grab them, regardless of the price because it might be months before you see them again.
with the price of primers and brass it would almost be cheaper to buy loaded ammo and break them down and reload.

I sure pick up all the dropped rounds I see. I won't shoot random ammo, but I will pull it down for brass and primer. Certainly not the Secret Sauce bulk powder and the bullet is probably not what I am loading so it goes in the scrap lead box for my casting friends.

I figure primers are a fungible commodity. Even if Sig primers are only for Sig ammo, and most of Fiocchi and Hornady are in house, and the spooky sounding Expansions go to commercial loaders, that will pressure Vista to compete on the reloading market.
I will be surprised if prices get lower than double the pre-Covid level, but supplies will build back.

I don’t want to turn this into a discussion of economics. The reality is every part of the public sector is facing inflationary pressures. When I sell a gun - or anything else - I run an inflation calculator to verify the value of the asking price. I have to assume the Big Boys are doing the same. If Vista bought cartridge brass or copper at 2016 prices they would be foolish not to sell in 2023 dollars. I know it’s more complicated than that but the bottom line is, until inflationary pressures are eased, prices will have to be higher than previously normal.

Cooper alone closed 2019 at $6.16/kg or about $2.80/lb. It settled today at $8.89/kg or $4.04/lb. Naturally that's the spot price...for raw copper. In the past year a smart buyer could have picked it up at $7.00/kg. It peaked last March at $10.73/kg, so you can see how volatile price have been. I wouldn't want to be in that market...though I am as a shareholder in Freeport-McMoRan.
Now don't even get me started on Zinc.
Yeah, raw materials costs alone make it fairly unlikely that we'll see $25/k prices on primers anytime soon. Last videos I watched they're still highly labor intensive to make. I have yet to see an automated primer plant in operation...far too volatile for that. So if folks want to shove $15/hr minimum wage down our throats, imagine the labor costs in this highly skilled industry.
