Found an SKS at Cabela's today and put it on layaway. All the serials match up. I can't tell but it looks like the stock might have been replaced. The bayonet and the fixture it's attached too definitely has been. All in all it's a good looking gun. From the serials it looks to be Yugo. I can't wait to get it home!!!

Any tips for a first time SKS owner?? :D

BTW, one of the nicest things about the SKS (and AK for that matter) is that it was designed to run on the cheap(er), steel case Russian ammo. It will function flawlessly. That's a big deal at today's prices. I just bought an AR15 and a case of ammo is going to run me nearly what I paid for the rifle!

Edit: Another tip: Be sure to clean it THOROUGHLY before you shoot it. Most of the Yugo SKSes were stored packed in large quantities of cosmoline. They may have cleaned it off the exterior, but you will often find it everywhere on the insides. Pay close attention to the bolt and firing pin channel, you can find videos on the Internet how to disassemble this. Cosmoline in the firing pin channel can cause slamfires, which can be very dangerous.

More edit: Link to lots of neat info on Yugo SKS: http://yugosks.net/

Note... don't buy the detachable "duck bill" hi-cap mags. From my experience, they're crap and aren't worth the money spent on them. Buy yourself a bunch of the little metal stripper clips and practice with them.

Also, Cabelas also sells an aftermarket stock for the SKS with an adjustable stock, I think they have one with a folding stock too as well as one with a dragunov style stock. They run around $50.

After that, since you're at Cabelas, pick up one of their bulk packs of 7.62x39 and go to have fun at the range.

OK, here are some videos on how to disassemble and reassemble your Yugo.

It will not be as easy to disassemble it the first time due to the cosmoline.
BE AWARE: It's going to be Messy! Make sure you have a lot of "throw away" rags for your first degreasing. Don't be surprised if it takes a couple of hours to remove the cosmoline out of the rifle. Some people use mineral spirits to dissolve the cosmoline. I used Hoppe's #9 on mine two weeks ago.

You now have two issues you're going to deal with:
1.) It's always hungry! It's like Mikey and will eat any 7.62x39mm you put in it, but it's has an insatiable appitite.
2.) They multiply on you when you're not watching. In no time you'll have three. Trust me.

(Sounds like a Tribble ;))

Enjoy your new toy!

One the other hand you might just enjoy the one you have and spend all your money on ammo rather than new SKS carbines. It is a might difficult to shoot more than one at a time. :D The SHadow Knows!

Add me to the ranks of SKS owners. I got one just this past week. I've waited too long, and have now paid for it, shelling out for one in "excellent, like new" condition from J & G Sales. I was a little surprised at the condition. The stock appears unfinished, had a fair number of dings, and looked like it had once been handled by a car mechanic with dirty hands -- lots of black grease marks on the stock. The rest of the gun appears, from what I can tell so far, to be in excellent condition. It wasn't covered with nearly as much cosmoline as some I've seen, except when it came to getting the inside of the barrel clean.

I've taken the advice to strip and clean the firing pin, among other things.

I'm cleaning up and re(?)finishing the stock, and then I'll put it back together and go have some fun at the range.

cleaning tip, heat works well on the cosmoline. If you wife will let you, strip it down, lay the parts on a old cookie sheet and bake at 200. The cosmo will run out. I would say just hang it upside down in sun for an afternoon but thet will not likely work this time of year.

I do agree on the buy lots of ammo and stripper clips. I sold mine to a buddy, he carries a belt pouch with 200 rounds on strippers. when we chase jacks and whistle pigs he keeps up with me and my AR on reloads.

+1 on lots of ammo!

Does it have a blade bayonet, night sights, and a grenade launcher? Some folks mistake the launcher for a brake or hider. Does it have a little spring loaded button up on the gas block that has 2 positions? If so it's a yugo.

When you seperate the stock from the rest of the rifle(the safety has to be ON to do this):

1. Use mineral spirits with gentle heat on the wood stock.

2. Go get a can of foamy engine brite from an auto parts store. Use that on all the metal parts. It will remove all the cosmoline WITHOUT hurting any paint markings(like the white lettering on the yugos grenade sight).

3. Take the bolt ALL THE WAY apart and clean out the firing pin channel!! It's a pain but you do not want the firing pin to stick forward because you missed some cosmoline.

4. Most of those aftermarket duckbill mags are hit and miss on functionality. I'd strongly advise you to just leave it "as-is". IF you do start monkeying around with stocks, mags, etc., watch your 922 parts count compliance!

No no no, you don't want an SKS. They're too easy to shoot, and way too much fun. Pretty soon you'll start thinking that everything should be that good, and that will be bad for your general outlook on life. You'll have to start wearing a hair shirt, and beat yourself with chains, in order to balance everything out. Or, since there's almost no recoil, you could just whack yourself in the shoulder with a rock after every shot. That would raise the amount of suffering to a more realistic level, and help meet the Federal Minimum Daily Requirement of Firearm Pain.

(You're gonna love it. But buy stock in an ammo company now.)

buy lots of ammo. when you think you have enough bu more. When you think you finally have enough, buy a case for good measure. Prices will most likely go up soom. I just saw cabelas bulk 9mm go up $50 in a few weeks
