Hello to all.

Was referred here by another forum; hope my question/thread is not out of line; if the mods feel it should be moved, please feel free to do so.

I am looking for a gunsmith I read about, years ago, in an article published my Mr. Ayoob. Here is a copy of the thread I posted over on the rugerforum.com :

Having read another post here about a specific gunsmith, it gave me an idea...

Many years ago (and this is from memory so details are suspect), IIRC, Massad Ayoob wrote an article in a magazine called(?) The Complete Book Of Magnums (late 80's early 90's vintage, I think), about a pistolsmith who was a past Ruger Armorer who had went into business for himself, and did work on the Six series of pistols. I think his name was Chris Peters, and the conversion/work done was called the Lynx. In the article, Mas used this gun in a shooting event (2nd Chance, I believe) Again, memory is suspect, so excuse any errors....

Way back when, I had the magazine, as well as info his shop sent me, from the address in the article, and the idea of a custom gun was beyond my means/interests, other than pictures, and all that paper is lost. But I never forgot about how highly Mas spoke of this fellow, and how much I liked the looks of the work.

You all are lots more connected to the Ruger world than I. Anyone here ever hear of this fellow, or maybe know of the article I am speaking? Can't recall the name of his shop, but I think it had "Trapper" or "trappers" in the wording. I have tried internet serches to no avail....

Any leads, or paper trails, would be appreciated, as I'd heally like to hunt down that article, too.

Here, as there, any leads or information that might help me track down this 'smith would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Well I'm not Mas, but I have met him... :)

Anyway, the gunsmith you are looking for may have retired and no longer be in business. However here is his company and the last address I have:

Trapper Gun, Inc.
Custom Guns
16746 Fourteen Mile Rd.
Fraser, MI. 48026

I'd try a PM or even write Mr. Ayoob directly if in doubt

Just possibly Lyn "Trapper" Alexiou is the maker in question, known for spring kits and an ASP style pistol and other cutdown pistols during their 15 minutes of fame.

ALEXIOU, LIN "TRAPPER - Secrets of a Pistolsmith should be a good source

Want to say thanks to those who have posted so far; though I do know that Alexiou is not the fellow I am looking for. Alsp pretty sure that it was not a MI based smith (but will look into it)...thinking maybe Maine, or...?

I know this is a needle in a haystack kind of hunt, but it has stuck with me 'till now, and I did not have the means I do now...

Seem to remember from the article also (?) that perhaps Mas kept the gun he used/tested in the article, and am also pretty sure the conversion was called the "lynx". It was a stainess Ruger 6 series revolver (before GP), and I believe the smaller external parts were blued (cylinder release, trigger & hammer).

Again, thank to all who have chimed in so far.

1RugerFan 33:

Sorry this took so long. The guy you were looking for was Chris Peters, who had left a job teaching the Ruger armorer's school to do gunsmithing on his own. I believe the company was called Wind River Trading or something similar.

Just finally got hold of Chris today. He has been out of the private 'smithing business for some time. A few years ago, Ruger wisely hired him back, and he's pretty busy with a lot of responsibilities at the Newport, NH plant. However, he's thinking about getting back into private 'smithing a little bit, on the side, maybe next year.

If that comes to pass, I'll post contacts here.

In the meantime, as one of the other members has already noted in this thread, Rick Devoid at Tarnhelm (www.tarnhelm.com) does a helluva good action hone on a Ruger.

Best wishes,
Mas
