Question for Southern Californians

Kneel to your Lords and Masters! Sorry, I moved after 12 years in S/Cal.. I hate what has become of this state's political agenda on 2nd Amendment Rights.

check out packing.org

there's a lot of good info there. Basically, you'll need to apply for a CCW, stating a GOOD reason to carry. AFAIK, obtaining a good reason consists mainly of:

- being previously threatened and have record of it
- carry large amounts of money on job etc

Its pretty difficult to obtain a CCW though here in Socal. In Los Angeles County its almost impossible. Orange County, from what Ive heard is a little easier, but a tedious process.

In OC, a $90 background check is needed, interview, also CCW course, registration etc etc... Approx $500 and 2 months to obtain the license. That's brief though, check out calguns.net. a lotta cali people hang around there. I started a thread on California CCW a while ago.

Good luck... you'll need it.

Based on my CCW experience with the good folks @ OCSD - south orange county.

The process:

1. Request for a CCW application by calling the OCSD - santa ana main office.

2. Fill out the CCW app. detailing your need for a weapons permit, etc.

3. Call for an appointment to have an initial interview.

4. When you show up at the Sheriff's office - internal affairs division, make sure to wear something decent and make sure to bring all the necessary documents relating to your weapons permit application.

5. You would be ask to produce a CA driver license and the investigator assigned to you will do an initial interview. Based on what you said and documents presented to him, he may request additional paperwork to support your need for a CCW.

6. Once you have submitted all the required documents via fax, ( I personally went back to the Sheriff's office to give them the additional paperwork much faster this way).

7. The waiting begins..... They said it would take a month or two to process the paperwork.

8. After a little over 1 week, I got a letter in the mail, it said, I got approved, at that time, I was stoked. :p I was like, wow that fast.

9. Went back to the OCSD - internal affairs, pay the live scan fingerprinting check fee.

10. Jogged right across the internal affairs office down to the fingerprinting office.

11. some waiting..

12. Holy shizzz :D it only took, I think 10 days for the fingerprint results, got a call from Sabrina B. internal affairs, boy was it the hottest sounding voice I've ever heard that day and she's got the looks to back it up too.

13. OK, at this point I was told to get into a CCW class, took care of all that stuff the same week.

14. Off to the OCS-armory in Orange for a weapons check - ammo capacity, overall condition of gun, etc.

15. Headed back to internal affairs office, submitted all the final paperwork, thumbprint, signed, receive my CCW permit.

Overall, it took almost 1 month and 600+ bucks in total cost, YMMV.

I just received my California CCW in Orange County. Here is what I believe helped me. The process took about a month.

1. No criminal record. No traffic tickets even.
2. I travel to an organized shooting club at least 4 times a month and have about 5-7 guns with me in my car. I documented this with signed letters from my club.
3. I applied. For years, I just assumed I would be turned down. I was very wrong.
4. I am a clean cut 41 year old family man.
5. I very politely and succinctly explained my justification during my interview.
6. I had all my documents ready during the interview and tried to make the interviewer's job go smoothly.
7. I tried to put myself in the shoes of the interviewer. I dressed appropriately and did not lie or exaggerate.

I firmly believe in the second ammendment and I believe that we all have the born right to carry concealed without any permit or license. However, the reality in California is not according to these beliefs. I reminded myself that the people who processed my paperwork did not make these laws and my attitude was respectful and courteous. I have to say that I was treated very well by the lady that interviewed me, the person that took my fingerprints, and the armorer that checked my guns for safety. The process was not an ordeal and I was treated fairly.

(Please don't flame me and tell me how bad California is for even making me do this. I do not agree with this process. I am just explaining it. I wish we had the same freedoms as other states. Unfortunately, we don't. Someday, I hope this changes.)

It should only be around, 50 bucks plus another 50 re-qual fee.

Thanks for the quick replies, there's just one catch. Does CCW needs to be a US citizen?

IIRC, I believe so, they'd ask for a place of birth( town/city and state) and check the states record/DOJ/FBI.

Try the Packing.org website or a Cali. proRKBA attorney may be able to help you out as well.

Vega, what county are you in.

What Dave, a certain twotone odiferous critter isn't on the list of things that helped? :p

Supposedly, only orange county will allow its subjects...uh, residents, to carry and they are the only county that will issue permits to the peasants...

Clubsoda, Pretty much.. :D

And San Deigo county.

OC is pretty much as Dave3006 said; I'll add that a couple of misdemeanor incidents over 20 years ago (DUI and Public Intox) didn't hurt me. Range and club letters, two personal reference letters, DD214 if you have one, took the interviewer 2 days after all paperworks submitted to dend the approval.

Just waiting on my prints check to come back (should be quick, a couple weeks total); I expect to get the weapons inspected and the permit issued sometime next week or right after the 1st. I've already completed the CCW course.

San Bernardino County is "almost" shall-issue, but they do want you to first apply (and probably get denied) by the city you live in if it has it's own PD; then you can apply to the sheriff and get permitted.

In LA County, Culver City used to be good, but the Chief there just retired and no clue yet as to whether the new CoP will be as cool. And you do have to be a resident of Culver City now, they changed the law so you couldn't get one in the city of your business address.

Oh, right, that's why you need to submit a recent utility bill in OC as well, to prove residence.

CALIFORNIA CCW

About half the counties in CA will issue CCws, Ventura is one, and most of the counties up north. You have to be a resident of the county.

It goes a little easier if you already have a Florida CCW, for instance, or Utah or Nevada or Arizona. It establishes already that you are a good guy.

That's the good news. The bad news is that even with your legal CCW, if you use it in San Francisco or Los Angeles counties, and the BGs are politically correct and you aren't, you will need a very good lawyer and a lot of money.

Moral, get all the CCws you want, but stay out of those two counties. There isn't anything there that a decent person would want anyway.

God bless and y'all be careful out there.

My apologies to the Skunk, I do not take credit for my "need statement". Mr. Skunk called me on the phone and explained that OCSD does sometimes issue to people who are frequent shooters and travel with multiple guns. To me, this was the key. And, it has to be true.

Thanks again to Skunk.

I live in Ventura County. I frequently compete ay Norco and Gunnex. I plan to compete in Piru too. DOJ allowed me to purchase 2 handguns and 1 rifle. My 2nd handgun was put on hold and my eligibility was questioned but after some researching they apologize for the delay.

WHERE DID THE THREAD GO?

I thought this was about California CCWs. DOJ has nothing to do with CCWs.

In Ventura County, you go to the sheriff's office in Ventura, (the city), and ask for an application at the license desk. You fill it out (It has misprints & erroneous instructions, best to fill it out there, so you can ask questions.)

You pay a fee, get printed, and wait until you are called in for an interview. The interviewer is a sheriff's deputy, nice guy. If he sees no problem with your app and your reasons, it gets forwarded to the sheriff, who gives the final OK. You have to qualify with your weapons, we all go to North Hollywood to qualify, and the weapson (up to three) are listed on your CCW. It all takes a couple of months.

Again, I strongly suggest you have a Florida, Nevada and Utah or Arizona already in your pocket when you go in. Your reasons can be carrying lots of cash, traveling into dangerous neighborhoods on business, physical disability which impairs your ability to run away or defend yourself (anyone on blood thinnners qualifies, obviously) and so on.

There are also some cities, in LA county, which issu CCWs very readily. I am not sure, but I think Carson is one, and of course Beverly Hills gives them away to the folks that live there.

Good luck with your apps.

God bless and y'all be careful out there.

*8*, can you elaborate? All of us San Diegans were under the distinct impression that SD County was *Shall Not Issue* unless you had a restraining order out against someone or had a police report that your life was being threatened by someone.

What other kind of "statement of need" works in San Diego?

Okay, so P.I., gun shop employee and a few others, but for normal, real people, does anything else qualify?

Thanks for all the replies and advises guys. I'll just probably wait for my green card before I apply for CCW. I thought frequent competition would justify the CCW approval.
