Questions about guns for a book

If a .22 is what is available to me, I'd make it work. It's been used to take just about every animal there is and plenty of people. I agree with using a bolt action for the versatility. You may also want to consider the ammo your character will be using, I can easily put 5 shots in an eyeball size target at 100yds with my Savage MKII BV using subsonic ammo and you can hardly hear it. That translates into an effective defensive weapon with zero muzzle flash and very little report to give away your position. Plus, you can use it for sustanence hunting on birds and small game without spooking every animal in the area.

I would consider giving my character a handgun in some substantial caliber but limit the amount of ammo on hand, forcing him to use the .22 and "guerilla warfare" except in the most dire of situations.

If I am alone and my opponents are a hundred yards away and have no idea where I am, I would strongly favor lying doggo and letting them walk on.

Your guys are right, I apologize, there's never any reason to be able to engage or eliminate threats at (relatively) long distance without giving away your position. ESPECIALLY when we're talking about a SHTF/survival scenario in a work of fiction.
Let's keep in mind the OP's original question and intent, that's what my post was in response to.

If you had to evacuate your house, assuming you had to leave at least some of your guns behind, how would you secure them? would you hide your guns in the hope that you would later be able to reclaim them, or would you just leave them where they are stored normally?
Now that matters on time and intent.

If I had a lot of time, but knew that I'd never be back, I'd barter with the ones I couldn't carry along.
If I had a lot of time and might be back, I'd hide them creatively.
If I had little time, and might be back, I'd pack whatever I could carry and had a lot of ammo for (.22s/l/lr or mag are winners there every time, as are lower maintenance bolt/lever/revolver guns), and disable what I left behind semi-permanently by disassembly.
If I had little time and was sure not to be back, disabling (don't want to arm looters) is in the list of priorities, but not high on the list at all - but once again, I might attempt to transport everything as bartering goods, knowing that my load would get lighter rapidly.
