I do not own one, but want one. I was at the gunshop today talking with a very nice employee and fellow customer. They both love the gun and said that everyone should have one in there collection.

Do you agree? Must have for your collection.

P.S. I handled a couple of different models and loved the trigger, balance, and feel. Price ranges from $350 to real expensive. I have always loved the 45 as well.

1. Yes get it. Must have for your collection.
2. No, and why you voted that way.
3. Maybe

My simple answer is yes.

The SA trigger can be made to be extremely crisp, very little take up, great pointability, handles very well, and an absolute blast to shoot. Aftermarket accessories and capacity to modify galore.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (since I usually type long responses to 1911 threads) I'll end here. But search my posts regarding 1911s and you'll see why they're amazing platforms to shoot.

Interested in a 1911? Why stop at one?

Everyone should have at least one, and preferably a Colt. Everything else is just a wanna be. :)

Get one good one in your hands and you will have one or more around for the rest of your life, they really are that good when done right.

Yes! Got four myself. Try one, and you'll never save another penny again. They're like Harleys...if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand.

But I have a big list of must-haves. The very bare minimum of guns is a 1911, a Ruger 10/22, and an 870/500/1300.

1911's are far from my fav handgun, but I'm a advocate of the everyone should one at least one theory. It's a timeless classic and JMB's most successful gun design. No firearms collection is complete without a 1911.

Its the grandaddy of all modern auto-matics. There fun to shoot, comfterble to hold, amazingly simple, theres thousands of aftermarket parts, best trigger ever on a semi auto, single stack design makes it very easy to carry. Get a good one and it will NEVER jam.

Because it's as American as God, Mom, and apple pie! It's gotten us through many wars and is still used over a hundred years after it's birth!
It shoots short fat bullets and makes a lot of noise. It's the musclecar of handguns.

A better question is why not have one. Ask yourself that and then when no good answer comes up go lay down the cash. Trust me as long as you get a good one you will never regret it. Hell I go by the name "glockfan" and my Kimber is my favorite pistol in the collection. Its a timeless all American classic, reliable, accurate, feels good in almost anybodys hands (its the only pistol my wife will shoot), and in stainless with nice wood grips it downright sexy.

Personally, I'm not interested in competion shooting and customized guns.

I just want reliability and accracy without spending a fortune for it.

With that said, I have a 1911, but could do nicely without it.

Yes! You will experience the function and feel of a perfect design.

not everyone is into auto's, my grandfather had about a dozen S&W, Colt, and H&R revolvers but never bought an autoloader, he shot them quite a bit and qualified with a 1911 in the service, but just prefered revolvers. I on the other hand am more of the mindset to at least try a variety and buy what works best for you. I love my 1911, but I think at least one wheelgun is worth having too.

Yes. Pleasing in all ways, generally reliable and relatively simple, a world of add-ons and modifications to personalize it.

I have never been a 1911 fan or a fan of .45 auto period. But by the influence of some strange mystical force, I truly believe that I will never part with my Springfield G.I -45. It is truly appealing to me. But it will never earn the place that my Glock 20 has. I voted yes to the poll. I figure anybody who seriously or casually considers themselves to be a gun collector, would surely own a 1911 of some sorts. It makes me feel all patriotic when I hold it :) .

The 1911 clearly proves it is the undisputed world champion (both then and now). In fact, the 1911 cannot be dethroned until another firearm bets its longevity (97 years) and match its popularity: the 1911 is as popular today as it was then.

But the most important aspect of the 1911: It’s pure testosterone and one bad ass looking gun.

I voted "maybe." It depends on the individual's interests and reason for owning handguns. I see no reason why someone who was interested in shooting cap & ball black powder revolvers would HAVE TO own a 1911 .45 pistol. Also in my opinion, the pistols being produced today (excluding the more expensive ones) are not true 1911 pistols, as they do not adhere to either the dimensional or material standards of Browning's pistol.

On the other hand, if he or she wanted to have one, that would be entirely different. If there’s an itch, scratch it!

The 1911 was not my first handgun. As a matter of fact, I was middle aged before I ever owned my first. What a wasted misspent youth:rolleyes:

I guess I felt it was an archaic design with no place in a modern battery of newer "better" handguns. I could not have been more wrong. After I had bought my first, I began to shoot box after box of .45's downrange. The feel of the 1911 seemed to be so natural. The trigger broke just right, and the recoil was comfortable in a heavy push-kinda-way.

The 1911 became predictable to me. I knew what to expect from it. I knew it would cycle; I knew when the trigger would break, and I knew where I hit the moment the round went off. Calling shots became easier with the 1911 than with most of handguns. I have felt like this with a few other handguns--a nice 6" Model 19, a High Standard Victor, a Smith 41 to name a few.

The 1911 is a timeless very reliable, accurate, and versitle platform. I wish I had more. The only handgun of which I own more is the Smith Model 19. Come to think about the count, I believe the last 1911 evened the score.;)

I voted yes, since this is the auto loaders forum, and not general discussion. If one has any interest in semi automatic pistols, then he should own the one that established them as service sidearms, and endures to this day. In fact, with a few exceptions, the vast majority of semi autos made use the tilt breech locking mechanism John Browning pioneered. Mr. Browning's model of 1911, nearly 100 years later is still the standard by which all semi autos are judged. The Luger was another early semi auto service sidearm, but it has been relegated to a historical piece. The 1911 perseveres, and when made correctly as our friend Old Fuff notes, it still equals or betters all challengers. It is an essential firearm for any true fan of the auto loading pistol.

Been there, done that, didn't like 'em, don't have one and don't miss it. A "must have" would depend on the individual. If you're a big fan, then you "must have". Me, my only real "must have" is a K frame sized .357 magnum 4" revolver. I like revolvers anyway and, to me, that's just sort of the most versatile handgun and the quintessential service revolver. Besides, I started centerfire life with a Ruger Security Six.:D There really ain't a "must have" autoloader to me, though I own a few and even carry 'em.

Smith and Wesson M10, that might rank as a "must have" with me, also. :D

I've owned a couple, but I still shoot better with my Hi-Powers. The 1911 is a very fine weapon, but it's just not for me.
