Just bought this game tonight. I'm LOVING it. The weapons variety is great, and I jumped for joy when I found out that the FAL was in there (as well as the M14).

A few quips, though. I'm sure many of these will be addressed once the modding community gets busy, but to date, here're my beefs with the weapons loadout.

1. No lights. Sometimes the weapons the tangos sport have mounted lights. I would've assumed that the player's weapons could too.

2. High capacity magazines. A neat addon, but sometimes they're available for weapons that don't actually have them, like the Desert Eagle and Mark 23.

3. .45ACP. Most rounds have reduced damage when using subsonic ammo, which makes sense, except in the case of .45ACP. Even most +P .45ACP loads are subsonic to begin with (making it the ideal choice for a suppressed submachine gun).

4. Not ENOUGH WEAPONS. They included the Desert Eagle in there, but no 1911? Come on.

Here are the weapons *I* would've added. Not just so the player could use them, but to give the badguys a wider cross-section of weapons to be armed with (that's why some of the weapons are in there. I mean, what counter terrorism team actually uses the Vz-61 Skorpion?)

Note that these weapons reflect mainly what I'd like to play with, not what a counter-terrorism team would actually use. :)

HANDGUNS

-M1911A1 (GI Stock)
-M1911A1 Custom (threaded barrel for suppressor, better sights, 8rd
mags.)
-Smith & Wesson 686+ 4". (You need to have at least ONE revolver.)
-Browning High Power (standard mags 13rds, high caps 17, like the So. African ones.)
-Glock 20 (they have a 10mm SMG. Need a pistol to go with it.)
-CZ-75B.
-Tokarev TT-33
-CZ-52
-Makarov
-CZ-97B (just 'cause)
-Stechkin APS 9x18mm (Select fire Russian goodness)
-Walther PPK
-S&W Model 10 (just 'cause there are so many of them)
-S&W 629 Mountain Gun .44 Mag
-Walther P99

SMGS

-HK UMP-40
-Bizon-2 in 9x18mm and 7.62x25mm.
-USGI M3 Grease Gun
-MAC-10 .45ACP
-M1 Thompson
-PPSh-41
-Sterling (and the one with the intergral suppressor)

SHOTGUNS

-Remington 870 Police
-Mossberg 590A1
-Saiga 12K (5 and 8 rd mags, 16" barrel)
-NeoStead
-FN Tactical (the one with the M4 stock)

RIFLES

-Galil AR .308

-DSA SA-58 OSW (13")
-Ruger Mini-14 Government (evil version with bayo lug and such)
-FN 2000
-AN-94 5.45x39mm
-"L85A1" would be replaced with the SA80A2, the supposedly improved version.
-M1 Garand (You GOTTA have the Garand!)
-M1 Carbine
-Robinson/MOLOT VEPR II .223/7.62x39mm
-Robinson/MOLOT VEPR II .308 (though with a 10rd mag it's better suited to sniper use)
-Marlin 1895GS Guide Gun .45/70 (I imagine .45-70 is quite leathal at close quarters)
-AKSU-74
-AKMSU-47 "Krinkov"

Probably lots more, too, but those bunch would make it awesomer. (new word)

Raven Shield Rules! I play it about an hour or so every night since it came out. (Yes, I am sad and have no life!)

It's all about the MP5/10A2 10mm!

Defineatly go download some more maps....there is a huge map pack available that has some terrific large maps in it. They were made for an official contest. (Sorry I can't remember the name of the pack or provide a link...at work right now.)

PC Only, right now. I believe a console version is coming out soon, but I can't remember which one...XBox I think.

It's currently on the PC (and has been for a while now) and will be coming out for the XBOX in September.

I can't wait.

I bought it when it came out...it's a cool game but too serious. The AI is head and shoulders above any other FPS sim, but still can be pretty..well stupid (but I can't complain, it has better marksmanship than me)

I'd just add the 1911 and 870 and get rid of some of the other guns. I always end up using the same 2 or 3 guns anyway. The Benelli rules in there.

The game's too much work, I haven't reinstalled it since I reformatted...gotta do that tonight.

I'm wanting the HK G3A4K-SD. A gun that is in one of the Rogue Spear mods... Small like an SMG, hits hard, and it's less noisy. Gotta love that one.

Are there any weapon mod packs out yet?

Has anyone played the Korean Rainbow Six? They have Daewoos and P7M8s...it's in Korean though...I was gonna pick it up as a souvenir, but hell if I can tell the difference between 'Kill him' and 'He's a hostage, stupid' in Korean...

I refuse to play any game that has a desert eagle in it. I hate desert eagles

You're missin out big on this one then man. you don't HAVE to use them at all. You have your shoice os a USP, SOCOM, etc, etc(i only played the demo and I know they've added more content)

The m-14 was the best rifle in the demo. and the mk23. Very fun game.

BTW... can you shoot through walls in the real game? You couldn't in the demo and that made it kind of unrealistic.

The enemy AI on that game is pretty bad. In the later missions the enemy become ungodly quick and accurate. Actually, it seems they can sense you rather than see you.

For instance, on the last mission there's a room off a 2nd floor hallway you need to clear. At the end of the hallway is a window and across the street is a building occupied by the enemy. If you walk up to the edge of the hall then lean out to look or shoot the guy way across the street will pop you in the grape immediately. However, if he's slightly off center from the window, you can plink at him and he'll rarely move.

I've also had badguys unload magazines at me through walls, when there is no way they could have seen me.

I thought Ghost Recon was much better. Being able to set waypoints for your teams on the fly was really nice.

How about Operation Flashpoint? I just picked up the Game of the Year edition for about 15 €.

I'm just waiting for my new my hardware to arrive since my computer is old, slow and just plainly sucks.

I played the first mission and liked it, but decided to wait for my upgrade when the framerate got too low.

Regards,

Trooper

Operation Flashpoint is a great game on its own, but it's a completely different format than Raven Shield. OFP is a large-scale battlefield simulator, where you can drive tanks and fly planes. The trade-off is that the game's engine doesn't model close-quarters and indoors very well (in fact, you can't go into most of the buildings in the game).

Raven Shield is just the opposite, focusing on indoors, and close quarters. It has much better graphics and a less fumbly interface (which were two of OFP's biggest detractions). Conversely, the engine would have a hard time modeling a cornfield in Iowa.

I downloaded a "realism mod" for Raven Shield that tweaks Rainbow and badguy AI, and I think it's helped. It's also reduced the time that it takes to get weapons like the FAL and M14 on target (I mean, yeah, they're heavier than the M16, but you can snap 'em to your shoulder just fine, especially if you're a well-trained Special Forces guy) so close quarters battle is all about the FAL now (with or without suppressor).

It also apparently makes the game distinguish between FMJ and JHP ammo. (In the default game, both perform the same.)

It's called "Gunmod's Realism Mod Version 1.2". CAn't remember the website, but a search should turn it up.

Looks like Sputnik is working on a Raven Shield mod. SWEET! He had the #2 weapon pack mod for Rogue Spear. The number one was the NATO3 mod pack. If there was a NATO3 for RAVEN - I would be most pleased.

I VERYMUCH enjoyed Sputnik Satellite's mods for Rogue Spear. NATO3 had the SA58OSW, but I liked SS's stuff more.

I have a few nitpicks about the game's AI, too. Your teammates are still pretty stupid. They'll walk right past a badguy that's shooting at them, unless they're looking right at it. They don't look around much, and they don't peak around corners.

Though it was an older game, the teammate AI in Police Quest SWAT 3 was unbeatable; EXCELLENT close quarters performance. They'd peek around corners, cover all angles, etc. Red Storm Entertainment should take notice.

A few guidlines for playing the game:

1) Smoke grenades are the most useful item in the game next to your firearms.
2) Silence your weapon with everyone but your sniper, but sometimes you need to silence your sniper rifles too. Do not silence 5mm category rifles though, then they do little damage.
3) For me at least, the SMG's are what to use 95% of the time. Of the time I use SMG's, I use the MP5SD the most often.

Be patient too, to take on the computer you need to take your time when you can and keep your weapon on target. Teammates are also really nice to have around to throw grenades for you. For example, you can order a teammate to throw a smoke grenade through a doorway while you cover another direction.

As far as the Desert Eagles go. They have one hell of a punch, but most of the weapons are lethal enough already. When you tend to have one-shot kills in this game, you're better off with the 12-15 rounds you can get in the Mk23 or Beretta than the 7-9 rounds in the DE variants.

Hello, my name is Tim, and I have a problem...

I've got the game since it came out but I never have the time to really concentrate on it... still stuck around the 9th or 10th mission in single player.

OTOH, what I try to achieve is a plan refined enough for the AI to play it through with me just giving go-codes... did that with the whole R6 series to date. IMO, the AI hasn't improved to the level it should be :scrutiny: .

Weapon mods seem still very scarce - anyone seen any?

And, where do you multiplay?

Yup. Even the very last level. Which was just about impossible, even on the easiest game setting, but I was able to do it. If you can get to the bomb and shoot the guys running to it... and then disable it... your all set. The way to do it is to clear the courtyard you start out near, then take the left route to go up the stairs, and then down to the locked door. Pick it and charge through in a crouch. The touch guy is all the way down the alley who will camp there and snipe at you. But if you can get him, your home free... almost. I admit to also using 2 smoke grenades here to fill the street with some concealment. Disable the bomb... then go back the way I came to finish clearing that side of the street. Once that is done, I go back to that door, pop another smoke to cross in safety. Go down the alley and enter that way clearing each floor room by room on the way. Don't enter that building's loby... its a crossfire zone until the whole floor is cleared and even then someone can come downstairs and suprise you.
You rush for the bomb... but once it's disabled, you can just take your time.
Oh, this is also using light armor. Medium and Heavy can make more noise and slow you down.
The MK23 also works, but you have to be more (a little more) conservative with your shots.
The suppressed AK gives me the best ballance of stealth and firepower. I prefer it. I also like the supressed FAL for sniping work. If the mission is all CQB, the shotguns are way groovy. The Ingram is a NASTY CQB gun. Ferocious. Just like in real life. The only hard part is keeping it loaded.
I'd like to see some .300 Whisper guns in there like what the mods give you.
We should put together THE THR MOD. Put in all the goodies from choice BS posters... Like the .454 Glock and armor that stops all .308s from the rear...
