It's pretty rare for me to actually get to shoot my .22lr. Its not a legal caliber for hunting here, and there weren't any "ranges" untill very recently. The only time I've gotten to shoot it alot is on private property, and the range we usually shot at is only bout 50yds since the guy I go with only shoots pistols. I've shot it out to a couple hundred yards, but only a few shots right at the end of the day.

Yesterday (miserable day) I made it out to our newly designated Hunter education range, with some friends. We shot quite a few different rifles, and they shot a few handguns, but my favorite part of the day was shooting shotshells and other stuff off the berm at 100yds with my .22.
Admittedly I've taken it out a few times here before it was actually legal, but only to shoot paper to match drops to the reticle on my cheapo Bushnell 4-16x40 Banner, and shot a few clays and stuff, but never spent significant time doing it.

Yesterday I shot probably 200rnds at the 100yd mark. Even in the pouring rain making hits wasn't terribly hard (and watching the bullet flight thru the rain was cool). It was hard enough to make it enjoyable, and rewarding to see a chunk of clay shatter, or a shotgun hull go flying tho.

So if you do have a place to stretch your .22 out to 100 or beyond I highly recommend you do so. Imo it's way more fun than it should be.

I did shoot a couple groups (the right side is corrected), but mostly it was plinking. Larger rounds are from my 6.5-284, it was all over the place till I adjusted my position. IMG_20180331_151718472_HDR-2672x2004.jpg IMG_20180331_181733851_HDR-2004x2672.jpg

I need to send you a ship load of squirrels to let loose! I cannot imagine having nothing to hunt legally with a .22. I would easily give up deer hunting for rabbit and squirrels with a rimfire.

I have a hippie sister who lives on the island, Kalapana (I think) near Pahoa, hard to keep track of her globe trotting. Some day I’ll get back to visit.

I actually live in Hpp, bout 40 Mins from Kalapana, one of the spots we go shooting is on some private land down that way.
The farm/hippie hale, my buddy has me help control pigs at is down there also.

I hunted squirrels on my uncles place with an airgun back when i was in highschool. While im not sure id give up deer hunting for squirrels, I do wish we had something to use them for. Least now with that particular public spot allowing .22s theres a place to shoot them legally. The thousands, and thousands of .22 casings i see at the other non-official ranges, proves people are doing it anyway.

I've shot .22s out to 200 meters, but don't bother to sight-in for that distance. It's more like shooting a mortar than a rifle. Wind deflection is also a big problem at our range, so shooting rimfires beyond 100 yards is a joke. Sun is behind targets until later in the morning and windless days are rare, especially in the spring, when we all like to get out and do some shooting.

When testing ammo/rifles we do it at 50 yards and try to do it in minimal wind and on cloudy days, using a solid benchrest with rear bag. Just before sunset seems to be best at our range. We also use an aiming point that's not where bullets are going to strike, to retain a good sight picture.

If you have a place where wind and sun aren't problems, congratulations!

lucky enough to do some steel shooting with a 22. pigs at 50mm, chickens at 100mm, turkeys at, rams at 200mm. while I cheat and do not shoot from prescribed positions and just use the bench it is not impossible. you just need to stop buying the cheapest ammo and sights possible.
and yes it is tons of fun. dc

Don't give up so easily. For the past year I've been playing around at 200 yards with a 22 and it is certainly possible to zero at that range. I picked up a used Leupold VX-2 with long range dials a few years go that I mounted on one of my more accurate 22's. I zeroed it at 50 yards and using the trial and error method figured out where to set the dials for 100 and 200.

It took a little time, and I had to use a really big sheet of paper to ensure I was at least on paper at 200 the 1st time. But once figured out I can dial the scope in at 50, 100, and 200 yards and be respectably accurate. This rifle is pretty consistent with 1/2" groups at 50 yards and 1" at 100. I won't shoot at 200 if there is any wind, but on calm days I've gotten some 2"-2.5" groups at 200. But to be honest that is rare. 3"-3.5" are much more common. But that is under 2 MOA and a lot better than most people think is possible.

I've started placing clay shotgun targets on the ground beyond the 200 yard line out to 220-230 ish yards and shooting at them. On a good day I hit 3-4 out of 10 shots. On a bad day 0-2 hits. But it is certainly possible, if not challenging. Shooting at 50 yards all the time was getting too easy.

I'd like to see what happens at 300, but I'm not sure I have enough scope adjustment to get there. It takes 1 full spin +16 clicks to get to the 200 yard zero from 50.

It would be nice to have a .22 LR rimfire scope that has a main crosshair, but other short ones for various distances out to at least 100 yards. Someone may make one, but I'm not aware of any.

I often shoot my .22 rifles offhand at the range, out to 100 yards...even shots at gongs placed at 200 meters, but have to estimate holdover...not too accurate way out there. I don't even try to zero the scope for distances beyond 50 yards, but know that it will be about 6" low at 100, depending on muzzle velocity.

We have some land here in Colorado and one of our favorite things to do is take old eggs down to the little shooting range I bladed out of a sand hillside and shoot them with our .22 rifles. To make it tough, we use a flimsy card table as a steady rest, so it's not a simple thing, but we thoroughly enjoy it. The mice and birds also clean up every bit of egg and shell, so the snakes stay down there to clean up the mice, keeping them away from the house. We went through 6 dozen eggs yesterday (Easter) and about 150 rounds of ammunition. Fun stuff. Next time I plan to get the good shooting bench moved closer to the backstop, as it is set up at 150 yards across the pasture. We'll shoot better using that, I'm sure.

Those .22 groups appear to be < 1.5", and each group looks to be 10 or 15 shots. That is very good at 100 yards for .22 LR, especially in the wind and rain.

I would be lucky to get 4" with my 10/22 at 100 yards.

A paradise, and a prison. I am writing the U.N. and the Red Cross for Islands. No Twenty two rimfire? That's unheard of. It's unscientific. It's insufferable! It's inhumane! The Geneva Convention will hear of this! I'll call the Marines! You will be freed! Refugee supplies will be on the way.

Seriously, I thank the Lord for the new range. Fun should not be illegal.

Nice shooting, too!

Yah know, about 5 years ago I got sent to Beligium for work for a month. I got to know a few people in the office over there and word spread around that I was a redneck so people kept coming up and asking me about pickup trucks and guns. People were amazed that our government was so gracious as to let me own a gun and use it, and all were totally floored when I told them I owned 17 at the time. Some thought I was a nut job, others were very envious, but nobody I asked had the slightest fealing of mistreatment or betrayal that there entire country had been disarmed by there government. They all just thought that’s just the way it is and there’s nothing we can do about it, and it never occurred to anyone that they should want a gun. It was really bazar.

Funny story, toward the end of my visit we got a box of parts from the US and I took my leatherman out of my pocket which I had had the whole time and the two guys with me were shocked and told me if the police stopped me on the street and searched my pockets I would be arrested for having a knife too long. I said to them don’t either of those things, being able to be searched for no reason, and not being able to carry a pocket knife, seem like violations of your basic rights as a man? They both just shrugged and we moved on. That’s the blueprint of how to turn a whole society into sheep.

I have a cheap bushnell 4-16x40 CF500.
Zeroed about 1/2" high at 20 yds puts first dot on at 50, second high at 75 and 3rd slightly high at 100 (I didnt think about it at the time, but the bullets land right at the top of the dot), when zoomed all the way in. At 6 power the second dot hits at 100. This is with CCI minimags, I also shot some federals yesterday and those track lower, so ill have to remap for those.

10rnd groups, bout 1.25" The one on the right was at the end of the day and it had cleared up pretty well.I had a Nikon buckmasters on here for a while and the gun will turn in slightly tighter groups than that with standard V rounds, but they dont match my reticle as well as the mini mags.
The little mossberg shoot great, hitting a bowling pin at 200 is as simple as knowing the drop and guessing a good wind correction.

HAH!, would those supplies be small lead topped brass tubes? cause im running low :D
and seriously it IS nice to have a place to shoot, hopefully they will extend the range a bit as that spots limited to about 100yds.

I worked for a Belgian owned company for quite some time, and our general manager was from home office. We did a lot of laundry at work (bio security, showers and new clothes in/out/between buildings), they were nice enough to let us do our personal laundry when we were on security shift.........she got used to finding brass in the dryer after about a week.............

I had some conversations with her about life etc in Belgium. From our conversations I sounds like they arnt as sheepy as one might think, but also the system works so no one questions it to strenuously.

Congrats. When you find that preferred match grade round for a 22LR, they can be amazingly accurate. Remington blue box match was awesome in my heavy barreled 10/22, and dropped woodchucks with a single round to 175 yards. Still my all-time chambering.

I used to shoot my .22's out to 200 yrds and little beyond. Used to enjoy it quite a lot. Funny thing though, I just realized, ever since I got my 17 HMR I haven't hardly shot my .22's at any long distance at all.
