Range Bags - What do you use and what do you keep in it?

I have a Stanley rolling toolbox. The top detatches from the bottom. I always take the top, but I only take the bottom when I'm taking a bunch of guns and ammo. The top will hold 3 handguns in hard cases and several hundred rounds of ammo. Depending on how much ammo I have, I can fit some hearing protection in it as well. Safety glasses go in the top compartment, clips (yes, I DO mean clips, not mags) and a hex tool go in the little swivel compartment on the bottom. The bottom section has wheels on it and clamps to the top by two latches. Sometimes people give me funny looks when I pull it out of the car and wheel it over, but when I open it up they look like they just had an epiphany  Ammo goes in the bottom because it's heavy, other stuff in the top. When I leave, I just dump all my brass in the bottom and sort it out when I get home.

rest, some towels or old rugs for rear rests, targets, stapler, staples, ear/eye protection, ammo, marker to mark holes,

im sure im missing something

Medium sized Bagmaster that holds two pistols in side pockets. Inside I keep earmuffs, shooting glasses, a small cleaning kit, a stapler, tape, screwdriver with multi-bits, a small flashlight, a pair of small binoculars and a shooting glove. Thats all permanent. Pistols/revolvers and appropriate ammo added as needed for range session.

I have an inexpensive duffel bag that serves range duty. The bag is built to take a beating.
It has enough room for every handgun I own (5) and ammo for all. I could carry more ammo, but it gets a little heavy. The guns sit in holsters or cases in the bag and the ammo usually stays in boxes. It's water proof too (big plus)

I also carry spare ear plugs, two sets of glasses (clears and sunglasses) a small first aid kit, drinking water and some foodstuffs. I have a small tool kit as well as cleaning supplies for various firearms. The one thing I added at the end of last summer was a small bottle of sunscreen. I can also fit folded paper targets in the bag. This bag also has enough room for rifle supplies.

I do have a smaller bag when I'm only taking one or two guns. I keep most of the same things in each minus some ammo and water. I don't usually bring a full cleaning kit in the smaller bag. All my guns get cleaned after every trip to the range.

I use my old backpack. Inside: Eye protection, hearing protection, magazines for various guns, cleaning supplies, camera, and ammo.

I use a stanley tool bag I bought at Walmart for ~$15. I love this bag. It's a pretty good size has a lot of side pockets in the main pouch perfect for holding individual magazines. Stuff my used brass in the side pockets. Last trip to the indoor pistol range let's see I carried:
masking tape
3 ruger mk II magazines
3 Wilson 1911 magazines
eye protection
custom ear plugs
ear muffs
Kleenex
3 boxes of .45
9 boxes of .22
one of those 8 in 1 screwdriver sets for guns
small screwdriver
pack of shoot n c's
some snap caps
and the ruger mk II and colt 1991

I started off using a big jeep brand duffel bag, but found it had no organization and I was able to put too much heavy stuff in it. I splurged and bought a I-Shot pro shooter bag and love it. It holds two sets of eyes and ears, stapler, targets (paper plates :) ). It holds my markers, up to 4 handguns and the appropriate magazines for each gun. Great bag, and was worth every penny.

An "Allen" that i bought at WalMart for cheap.

What's in it?

Band-Aids, 50 pairs of ear plugs, 2 LULAs, heavy duty staple gun, staples, bag of balloons, bottle of Betadine, clean unopened pack of Kleenex, misc. ammo, shooting gloves, extra eye protection, various magazines, 2 work shop type rags, container of Weapon Wipes, Excedrin, sunscreen, small Rubbermade container of .22 ammo, several .22 mag loaders, pockets w/rugs for two pistols and a box of "handi-wipes" for getting the lead and other debris off my hands when finished.

I have a Monster Cable bag that is supposed to be for transporting your Xbox or PS2 and games. My dad got it for free and gave it to me. I like it because the top opens up all the way (it is a flap) and it is easy to get access to everything.

My friend uses a 24" Craftsman toolbox which works much better if the weather is poor.

I-Shot bag for short trips to the range. Very nice bag with plenty of room for 3 pistols, ammo, mags, eyes/ears, and other stuff; everything fits well in little rugs/pocekts/pouches. If I'm heading out to the desert for a few hours, I just use a couple ammo cans in addition to the I-Shot bag.

I use an exercise/duffle bag that my wife got from the Salt Lake City Olympics some time back. It has several well-placed pockets that serve my purposes well, and the width of the bottom of the bag matches exactly the width of my gun cases, so it works out very well.

I tend to travel fairly light, so I'll have my pistol (usually in case, rather than holster), targets, ear protection (both muffs and plugs), eye protection, Shoot-N-See target stickers (love those things...), some flourescent target stickers, ammo, and a very small bottle of gun cleaner/oil with a few patches.

I have a really nice Green Mountain shooting bag. I just keep my competition stuff in there. I then have several other tool boxes for pistol stuff and for rifle stuff. The downside is I need about 4 trips to the car to get everything loaded up.

I bought an I-Shot range bag off the web. Very nice. Except one day I was inspecting the pockets and found a tag that said, MADE IN VIETNAM. Personally, I never buy anything made in Vietnam, but that wasn't stated on the site.

Contents of my shooting kitbag at an air rifle competition.

DSCF1271.JPG

Left to right: shooting cardigan (the ribbing in the shoulder prevents getting a fold of cloth underneath the buttplate); shooting boots (still in their storage clamps); shooting jacket and trousers; toolbox with spare parts and tools and so forth; shooting glove; Anschutz 2002CA air rifle; hex key; multitool; pellet box; shooting glasses in their case; sights box (the white styrofoam box under the rifle); rifle stand.

What's not there is the black cotton poloneck worn under the cardigan to stop the jacket rubbing off my neck and taking off chunks of epidermis and the tracksuit bottoms worn under the trousers.

And all of that goes into one kitbag and one rucksack-type rifle case. Getting to the range can often be a bit of a logistical operation :D

I use a wide mouth tool bag I bought from Lowes for use as cable bag. I retired it from carrying cables and converted it to gun use. I carry eyes/ears, a couple of pair each, and along with that I can pack in three or four handguns in zipper rugs. The outside has pockets for misc items like target attachers, tools, and cleaning equipment. I usually carry ammo separate in a 50cal. can.

By the way,
Ian,
"I have a WWII musette bag that I use."
What is a musette? I can find references to them on Army surplus sites but what were they used for?

I have a fairly nice black ripstop nylon range bag I bought from Sportsmans Guide. In the main cavity I carry ammo, 2 sets of ear muffs, portable cleaning kit, small screwdriver kit, Lyman tang site apertures, and 12 power binoculars. In one end pocket I carry a stapler and spare staples, the other end pocket holds my shot timer and SASS handbook. Left side pocked holds paper targets, right side pocket holds shooting glasses, spent brass bag, and misc. gun parts I may need during a match (I shoot CAS and 3-gun). This bag also came with a removable pouch for carrying a handgun.

I use a large laptop computer bag for my 'on the range' bag. Off the top of my head it's got (if I can remember right):

- primary gun, holster and mag pouches
- magazines
- ammo (in an old Army issue nail bag)
- ears
- spare batteries
- timer
- small towel
- small bottle of gun lube
- small tube of gun grease
- mag brush
- swiss army knife
- SOG multitool
- all my membership cards and stuff
- earplugs
- sunscreen
- water bottle
- pens/markers/super sharpie
- allen wrench and torx driver to take down the 1911
- light/dark eyepro and spare
- squib rod
- Army-issue compress bandages
- small first aid kit
- bug spray
- target pasters/masking tape
- staple gun and box of staples
- little belt-hook thing to hang my ears off of
- paperwork (manuals for the gun, forms for practice logs, descriptions of drills I like to shoot, my syllabus' (syllabi?) for the shooting classes, IDPA/IPSC rulebooks, etc)
- one of those plastic 'empty chamber' flag things which I've never used but didn't know where else to put it
- spare contacts
- other crap I can't think of right now

I also have another bag (a smaller i-Shot) that I leave in the car that has a spare parts kit for the primary gun, spare holster/mag pouches, a couple of FRS radios; more spare ears and eyes, cleaning kit, spare timer, more magazines for primary gun, gear for the backup gun (holster/pouches/mags/ammo), more staples for the staplegun, stuff like that.

I had a Bagmaster Tournament Bag or something like that. After about 2 years of shooting 2 to 4 times a week the main compartment zipper gave out completely.

I won a nice sized (I don't like the giant bags) I-Shot bag at the Ohio IDPA State match last year. Nice bag.

My bag contains:

Stapler
Staples
A handful of ear plugs
Earmuffs
Extra pair of prescription glasses with tape on the week eye lens
Small tool kit (pliers, screwdrivers, bushing wrench, cigarette lighter, etc.)
Small bottle of CLP
A few rags
Mag cleaning brush
Squib rod
Allen wrenches for sights and holster adjustment
Marks-a-lot large permanent marker
Pens
A small pad of paper
Coins and empty shells
5) 10 round .45 cal 1911 mags
5) 8 round .45 cal 1911 mags
5) 9 round 9mm 1911 mags
Old used ear plugs (yuck)
Baby wipes
A few new recoil springs
A slide stop
A firing pin spring
A .45 bore snake
A towel
Other assorted junk I can't remember

Ammo, mags, holsters, mag pouches, etc. depend on which guns are in the bag.
