I cannot stand peoples ignorance on the gun laws in the state i live in and im sure all over the country. In Kansas, and in MANY states, as an 18 year old, you are allowed to purchase a handgun through private sale.

So ive tried numerous amounts of times to purchase another .22lr handgun, and every single time i get ready to fill out a bill of sale, i have people gripe about how illegal it is and talk to me as if i am ignorant. Ive researched the law, have written statements from both local LEO's, atf agents located in the states, as well as state troopers. I also amwilling to provide this information, yet people just are naive and wont listen. Its so frustrating. The amount of people who go into cabellas and bass pro shop and buy a handgun with no training and are completely clueless, yet someone who has handled firearms safely and has training, cannot purchase simply because they are 18? I find this extremely annoying and frustrating.

Anyway, Rant over. How do you guys feel as selling and buying to an 18 year old? Am i just naive here?

PS. If you have a Sig Mosquito, or Walther P22 in kansas, ill buy it from you.

I feel your pain. I was the same way in my teens. Everyone treated me as if I was an idiot simply because i didn't have the number of years as they did even though I was very well versed not only in firearms in general but gun laws too. Hope you find someone who is respectful of you despite your age.

i feel like if i am able to provide the law, and documentation that people should atleast be able to listen. I mean i have names AND phone numbers provided in my sources. Yet nope, people put me off as some kind of felon or something.

Dont blame it on them, blame it on the govt. If the .gov didnt make the stupid crazy laws and threaten you with hanging for breaking them, then people wouldnt be that way.

Personally, and dont take this the wrong way as I dont even know you, but I wouldnt sell a handgun to an 18 year old anyway. Legal or not, I wouldnt do it.

Unfortunately young Jedi I think it's up to the seller what they feel comfortable with, not you. It's the way of the world my friend, but rest assured, it WILL change as you get older...and then, you'll wish you weren't older!

I hear you dnlgao. I would sell to you, no hesitation, but I'm in Washington. It's funny the people who won't sell to you simply because you are 18 but will sell to Bubba Joe Bob (who they don't know) just because they are 35, and yet they have no idea how responsible Bubba Joe Bob is, all they care about is that he is past those wicked, awful, irresponsible teen years.

ljnowell- And why is that?

I figured people on this forum would be more educated on the laws, which is why i try to find somethiing on here. Yet, it doesnt seem there are that many people that are from kansas that are too active on this forum. Seems weird.

Despite your attempts to provide "the law", people are "gun-shy" about gun sales especially to a young man. The "law" is looking real close at gun sales these days and no one wants to even have the appearance of pushing the edges of the law. Sorry, but you might just have to wait a couple of years to start your collection. Good luck.

I've forgotten what it's like to not be 21. Hasn't even been a whole year yet, but I've forgotten.

I'm with the the sellers on this one and would not sell a gun, nor approve of anyone else selling one, to anyone 18 (or 19, or 20, or 21). Exceptions are possible but they would be rare. Same reasons insurance companies don't like to insure them, and car rental companies won't rent cars to them, and banks don't like to lend to them. History and experience say it's a bad bet.

Bad debt? Im not understanding this. why not? Is 3 years that big of a difference? So you would trust me with a Ar15 but not a buckmark .22? Hmm. I guess ive traveled the world enough and seen how age does not matter. Bad debt would be the 40 year old people who swipe 5 cards to buy a 400 dollar tv. i guess i wouldnt know, lets just put it this way. Ive never had to rent or a car OR take a loan.

Screwy! It was like that in SC, an 18 year old could purchase a firearm individually but could not possess one say in a car or buy one from gun shop unless 21. It is 21. They lowered it last year but it is face talk...meant nothing to make the statement!

because here was the kicker! No matter what state you are in The feds say you must be 21 to possess/buy a handgun!

Federal Law Supersedes State Law..... Constitution!

It's not complicated. Those industries know from long experience that dealing with 18 yr. olds (mainly males) is a poor risk and they avoid it when they can. It isn't prejudice, it's business.

Leaving the personal aside, I said nothing about trusting kids with ARs (?) and would not in general trust an unsupervised 18 yr. old with either. Nor willingly the irresponsible 40 year olds. But adult rights must prevail at some point - my choice would be 24 or thereabouts for males. Does 3 years make a difference? At age 18, yes, it does. As you get older you'll understand - and also have occasion to rent cars (many jobs, and most good ones, require it), and finance a home.

You may want to recheck your knowledge on firearm laws. Federal Law says NOTHING about buying or possessing a handgun at 21. You can legally possess, transport (correctly), and own (assuming attained through private sale and not through ffl), and even open carry (in some states) at the age of 18. the only thing that is regulated federally is the ability to purchase through an ffl.

GBW: I can see where youre coming from. I guess it varies from person to person, because right now, im just a username on a computer. I think things would be different if you actually knew me. but thats neither here nor there. I appreciate the input.

You just made the point against you stronger. You just flew off in a rant about gbw's response without even reading it. He didn't say bad debt he said "Bad bet". Yes at 18 you can buy a rifle, go to war, buy smokes etc but 18 is not 21. 3 yrs is a long time for life experiences & it's 3 more yrs of growing up. People see 18 as still immature. Maybe that's not the case with you & I'm not saying you are but you just made youself look it by not taking a sec to read. All you saw was a person disagreeing with what YOU want & it upset you so much, it makes me think I wouldn't sell to you as well.

And you may well be one of the rare exceptions. Good luck. Don't spend this part of your life worrying over much about guns and such. Spend it very carefully deciding on how you want to spend your life, and then preparing yourself for it. Find something you love and work just as hard as you can at it. The guns, girls, toys etc. will all come in good time. Free advice, of course worth exactly what it cost.

The world at 18 are you in the service?
No, I'm not. Grandfather was a general in the Chinese Army, and was able to do a little traveling with him, before he passed. Been all over the US, Studied in china for 3 years, Lived 3 summers in Vietnam, Japan, and North Korea. Also studied abroad in Europe.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Again guys. Im not here to bash on people even though my initial post may have been a little bit brash. I just wanted to see where people were coming from. Thank you for all the responses.

If 18 year olds decide to vote in large numbers their problems might go away.

And age makes no difference at all in that case. There are lots of posters who do that, regardless of their age.
