Sorry for getting off track in my own thread but let me see if I understand.

Your contention is that if you put the die blank in the lathe, cut the inside and outside threads all at once it will be more accurate than if you do them as two separate stages on two different setups. Is that correct?

If so that make sense.

I was under the impression the dies are pre-made on one machine to family's of cartridges and then final reamed to make the dies as needed. So like all 308 based dies are made short chambered and undersized and then final reamed to 243, 7-08, 308 etc as needed.

Maybe we should start a thread on die making????

Running a hone down the bore of a die will make it larger but on what axis? Will it be the same in all directions, right, left, up, down and will the mouth be the same as the center or other end?

The device in post #15 won't do them all near as precise as a part with all machine work done at one time. It is just designed to make it larger.

That may have some bearing on why Forster told me this when I had them hone my dies.

Forster recommended not exceeding .248" for the .223 die and not exceeding .333" for the .308 die. They claim the dies start to get out of round when they exceed those ID's.
