BigBlueEyedDevil; I see you live in California. Go check out a Big 5 Sporting Goods; they carry both pump and coach-style shotguns and usually have them on sale.

I don't think so. I like the storage capabilities of being loaded and no spring problems. Due to my trying out a shotgun in the old house I really appreciate the blast effect and don't think much will be happening after a couple rounds, even if you would miss.
One other thing after trying out #4 buck is I really dojn't think shot size makes much differance at household ranges on a person. I wouldn't use slugs becase they do penatrate so far, but bird shot or buck will do the job.
Chewie I used to think the same thing until I read this. Preferably read the bottom of the second page where they talk about shot size in detail.

Coach gun for home protection

I was looking to buy a coach gun, just because they look kool. After researching them, looking at several, I decided against it. I bought a Remington 870 tactical instead. I already have a Remington 1100. I want more than 2 rounds. The 870 holds 8, the 1100 holds 9 (has mag extension).

OpelBlitz I have to admit, a problem with my Stoeger is the difficulty of opening and closing the action. I think I just need to clean it up more.

mine was stiff too. when I took it down for re-finish (after use in some foul weather several times) some polishing with a medium grit stone much improved it.

imho

another argument pro coachgun is that you can easily
make any1 your "Partner" in a bad situation.

a complete non-gun person wont know to operate the pump
under stress. SxS with ex hammers could be understood by a
monkey in a second ....

i like the ideas of a 16.ga Stevens .... if it comes nickel plated ..
i wont comlain ...

Baikal...in this case, a Remington Spartan branded Baikal.....

+1 on the Spartan...

I shoot CAS (Cowboy Action Shooting) and bought my "coach gun" for $320.00 with the chambers honed and polished (the shells drop free), as well as work done to allow the gun to open much more easily (I shoot long guns/shotguns left hand.)

There are also light Winchester AA Target loads that we use that have a reduced recoil which my daughter (at 103 pounds and 5'1") was able to fire it without bruising or discomfort. Even though we do not do it in competitions, it is cool to trigger both barrels with the light loads and watch the effect on a milk jug or other target...

I have pump guns as well and yes, the slide racking is intimidating, but so is staring into those twin muzzles!

I hunt doves with my Spartan 20, I/C, Mod. Get home, put in the Cyl/IC and load up with 3 buck and put the butt cuff on and it sits by the bed. Also makes a pretty neat combination gun with a shot load in one barrel and a slug in the other. I jump a rabbit or hog, I have the choice at my finger tip. :D It's a neat gun and ain't JUST a home defense gun. I shoot the thing a lot. The choke tubes insure that it patterns well for hunting.

For HD, a Lupara or coach gun has merit. Reliable, simple MOA, effective. The two shot capacity is a drawback, but knowing fast reloading helps.
Very true. One thing that is often over looked is that a 20'' barreled coach gun is WAY shorter than a 18'' barreled 870.

"We note with pleasure that Ruger is now promoting what they call a "John Wayne Coach Gun," which is a short-barreled, exposed hammer, double-twelve shotgun. (I have in the past referred to this sort of piece as a lupara, a term of Sicilian extraction, but by whatever name it is a highly utilitarian object.) The shotgun is probably the ideal instrument for home defense, and it should be neither complex nor clumsy. Eighteen- or twenty-inch barrels contribute to handy manipulation indoors, and exposed hammers permit the weapon to be maintained fully loaded indefinitely without mainspring fatigue. It may be true that the large bore-size of a shotgun invites small beasties to take up residence in your lupara, but that can be avoided by inserting a small cotton ball in each muzzle. We must accept the fact that the "John Wayne Coach Gun" will be promoted more as an accessory to "cowboy action shooting" than as an instrument of home defense. No matter. Whether you play cowboy or not, home-defense remains a serious matter."

One thing: avoid an inertia trigger that doesn't switch barrels if the first shell doesn't fire. Double triggers are more reliable, but make sure you practice with them. They are weird if you're not used to them.

Unfortunately, many double trigger guns don't have ejectors. Extractors are not what I'd want in a defensive gun. Too much fiddling. I hunt with one.:)

Get a Mossberg pump shotgun w/ 18 1'2" barrel.

For the HD application this seems more appropriate. The SxS is more of a field piece. The Mossy in cruiser config is basically a large pistol. You can have a tailored loading of shells if you want to graduate firepower. Otherwise I agree that you'd want to transition from the coach to a pistol.

I always find it amusing how many people feel the need to tell someone choosing a coach gun for HD how wrong they are.

I also wonder about the "spring fatigue" everyone seems to be so worried about with internal hammer models left cocked and ready. All my rifle are left cocked, my auto pistol is left cocked, and when I had I pump it was left cocked. Why are SxS guns different?

All together now: "Cycling causes spring fatigue, not loading!"
