One of my classmates just purchased a gun (or her husband bought it what ever) He’s been deployed and she is clueless about firearms and firearms safety. She was amazed that I suggested that she wear hearing protection when she goes to the range and has no idea if the gun is even loaded.

I need a good firearm safety manual for her to read anybody got any suggestions?

Before you say it, no taking her to the range myself is not an option it isn’t going to happen so please don’t suggest it. I've already recommended a NRA handgun safety course but she doesn’t seem interested. I’m hoping she would at least read a book

Look around for an NRA "First Steps" course (I think that's what it's called). I took my son to one of those.

+1

If nothing else she needs to take the NRA First Steps course.

The instructor will instruct her on her gun.

The course will also provide her with a very well written book.

Reading the owners manual will provide her with most of the basics, and specifics for her gun.

If she needs a manual for that particular weapon, just contact the company who made it - they will usually send a copy of the care/safety manual for that gun free of charge (I've done this twice with Ruger and once with Marlin after buying used guns - got the books free within a couple of weeks).

If she has the internet, send her to www.corneredcat.com

Excellent advice.

As far as a book, I'd suggest the Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery, specifically one of the editions by Massad Ayoob (5th or 6th edition), NOT the one by Chuck Taylor.

I have the 5th edition and it is THE book I'd give to a new shooter interested in the defensive use of handguns. It covers safety, self-defense law, gun selection, shooting technique, ammunition selection, the works.

That's one O' them there one page books I rekon. I'll start the list, feel free to add as necessary.

1. Know what's behind and beyond your intended target.

2. Finger out of the trigger guard until ready to shoot.

Thanks guys , she says she's been taught the four rules. She just doesn't know jack else

corneredcat's a good idea

You could really compile a good list of rules from THR and print them off for her. Then tell (or ask) her to memorize them until it becomes habit. Some are common and then there are the not so common rules like................

3. Never shoot a gun at water because of the potential to ricochet.

4. Never allow the barrel of the gun to become obstructed, it may blow up and cause serious injury.
