The new CZ75 .40 Compact looks very nice, and the cocked & locked option is great, but the mag capacity is limited to just 10 rounds and there have been reports of functional problems with JHP ammo (apparently JHP are illegal in Czech, and CZ makes little to no effort to address JHP ammo...???). I've already got ten round capacity and cocked & locked SA operation with my two Browning Forty HP's and if I'm going to get another forty, I'd like one with higher capacity. So in spite of the allure of the CZ, I'm leaning toward the HK USP Compact (12+1 capacity) and looking forward to checking out the Beretta PX4 in forty (14+1 capacity).
I just thought since you were familiar with the BHP, where did you hear about this JHP issue? i haven't heard about that before. I didn't know capacity was a big factor, yeah the USP Compact has what you want.

Cocked and Locked
over 10 rounds .40S&W
compact

sounds like it, I was going to say a Beretta 9000S but it only has a 10 round mag.

I'd say USP compact.

If you like your PX4 and are willing to wait a while, I hear they're going to make a compact.

A PX4 is on my shopping list, when the G model is available.

I'm partial to the USP. I just picked up a Compact 40 that is the LEM variant.
No safety, or decocker. I like it but it's not my carry gun. For half of what I gave for the USP I picked up a XD40 with (2) 12 rnd. mags used. I got it to use as a trade gun once I found something else I might want. I decided to keep it, and now it has became the carry gun. I wouldn't part with any of my HK's but for the price and the performance/reliability of the XD you can't go wrong.

My first post...
and,
I wasn't much help was I?

otomik... I was looking into the new CZ75 Compact forty and reading on the cz users forum. The gun has only been out a few months, I believe. A guy had just bought one and had problems with JHP's running through the mags, but no problems with FMJ.

Another guy had the same issue. He called the gunsmith at CZ-USA about the problem and he said they told him that in Chezk... JHP's are outlawed, so they don't generally engineer their guns to run with JHP's... they focus more on FMJ. He was told to use different ammo! Seemed a little crazy to me considering how many of their guns might be destined for the USA, but that's what he said they told him!

At this point, I'm leaning toward Beretta PX4 Forty in full size (when it comes out), HK USP Compact Forty in compact size, and Kahr K40 in sub-compact size.

The SIG's seemed a bit blocky to me, didn't feel quite as good in my hand, and I found their operating controls not as ergonomic for me, but no doubt they're fine guns.

The P2000 was nice, but I didn't like the operating system as much as the DA/SA C&L option that the USP Compact offered. And the USP Compact felt good in my hand.

The CZ-75 Compact looks like a great gun and I like the C&L operating system, but capacity is only 10 rounds in the mag and at this point I have some reservation about functionality of the mags with JHP's. I think the JHP issue will probably be worked out, though. Still don't like the 10 round cap. This gun is still in the running, however, as everyone seems so thrilled with CZ guns and I've never had one!

HK, CZ, Beretta, SIG, and Kahr are the only brands I'm interested in, so that's why I'm leaning toward the PX4 (14+1 capacity), USP Compact (12+1 capacity), and Kahr K40 for each size category. And I plan to keep my two Browning Hi-Powers in forty... just fired them both last night... wonderful! (Only 10+1 capacity though.)

All those nice revolvers and you still want a blasted .40? :)

Walther P99 variants are nice, but I really like the Steyr M-A1. Give that a look.

Gotta say, that little CZ Rami in forty is looking more appealing by the minute. But, hmmmm, the more I explore the CZ forums, there are quite a number of reports of problems with jams and magazine hang-ups with the Rami and CZ Forty Compact. Dang it. The HK USP Compact is really looking like a true champion.

The CZ Rami and Compact forties really look appealing BUT I'm really disheartened by all the posts in the various CZ forums about magazine problems, reliability issues, etc. It almost feels like I'm venturing into the world of Kimber 1911's,. That I don't need.

I'll have to find a much better comfort zone with the reliability of the RAMI and CZ Compact Forty magazines before ponying up the cash for one of them... though they really do look appealing.

By contrast, on the HK boards, regarding the USP Compact.. they seem to be about as close to trouble free as a gun can get. :) That means everything to me with this gun choice. Finnicky or sometimes problematic models are not what I want to venture into.... I've served my time with some of those! :cuss:

just a thought: you could look at the defensive ammo with expanding bullets that aren't hollow point design such as Corbon Powerball and Federal EFMJ. That would dodge any issues related to the bullet's profile. thanks for the link, interesting.

you have some great options on your list, you'll probably be happy with any of those you're considering.
