The Bren Ten is back!

The 10's rebounding - Colt Delta Elite, Dan Wesson making one in COMMANDER size, the S&W 610 coming back...

I wish Fortis GOOD luck on the Bren 10 revival, though the Witness/Tanfoglio 10mm's have always seemed good to me, especially in polymer frame.

Personally, I think the development of the 10mm into duty weapons was a wasted effort back in the day. If memory serves correctly ( and it may not as I have actually seen the Senators play at RFK stadium...brain's wearing out...) some of the first S&W 10's that got rejected by FB-1 go sent over to the VA. State Police and they had a crap-load of issues with them.

I'm truly not trying to bash the 10 but it just seemed a waste of effort to develop something new as opposed to refining that which already existed.

I've wanted a Bren 10 since it was Sonny's carry piece.

I will be keeping a very close eye on this. I had read somewhere that the Bren Ten failed because of the many complex parts. In the Gun Digest "Exploded Handgun Drawings" I count 66 parts on the "Pocket Auto" and 71 parts on the "Special Forces Model Auto".

Does anyone know for sure if the original Bren Ten failed in the market only because of part cost/complexity?

To be honest, the traditional slide-mounted safety/decocker versions of the 10mm's were not an issue. The FBI, however, wanted Smith and Wesson to radically alter their TDA autos to be SIG Sauer pistols. While not always a bad thing, the change in trigger geometry needed to incorporate a frame-mounted decocker on the firearms resulted in a less than satisfactory design.

If they'd had the 1066 with the traditional mounted slide control changed to decock only, there'd have been far fewer issues with the Smith and Wesson design.

10mm isn't that a Centimeter? Why not call it a 1 Centimeter?

Because 1 Centimeter doesn't sound as BIG as 10 millimeters. That, and 10mm was marketed as "bigger and better" than the 9mm. At least originally, in the days when the FBI blamed poor marksmanship, inability to retain primary weapons and corrective lenses, and poor tactics of bringing only handguns and backup pistols to a submachine gun and shotgun fight on a single 9mm 115 grain Silvertip.

Maybe some manufacturer should re-brand the 10mm as the 1cm! the new high power semi-auto brought to you by _________! Along with "new" ammo that has 1cm on the head-stamp instead of 10mm.
Imagine ONE CM +p
Just make sure to get it on all gun magazines.

That Sarsilmaz looks soooooo good! Are they imported at all, or is there little to know hope of getting one in the US? Granted it is pretty much the same item as my CZ-97B, but I love that, and I'd love the Sarsilmaz to go with it.

Not to mention it looks like the frame says "KILLING 45".

At first I thought maybe it WAS a 10mm and the manufacturer or owner decided to troll for a caliber war every time he went to the range.

I wouldn't buy one unless it comes with a magazine!

Even then I'd wait until spares could be purchased.

--wally.

For whatever reason, they never made it to production (I'm guessing money problems).

I remember hearing something about this on a podcast 6 months or so ago. One week the host was all jazzed. The next he said that they weren't ever going to make them, but I can't remember why.

It was supposed to share mags with the witness 10mm guns, so mags would not be an issue.

On Vltor's blog about the Fortis there's an update dated 2 April 09 which basically says that they got swamped with orders for evil black rifle related stuff, like the rest of the industry, post-Obama, and the pistol consequently got put on a back burner for a while. Post states that the Fortis is still in the works and pretty close to being production ready.

Whether or not it makes it past vaporware in the real world remains to be seen, but the (potential) manufacturer is still talking optimistically.

Vltor had a couple models on display at the NRA convention in Phoenix. Didn't ask if they were available or when they might be. The full size looked just like the original Bren Ten I sold in 1989.

Things starting to move on this, latest blog from Vltor. This is three days old, sorry for the delay:)

It seems there has been a lot of speculation lately about the Fortis Pistol… and we have had to sit back and watch, reluctant and unable to say anything. Which makes it that much harder for us to now say that the most pernicious of the internet rumors are true: the Fortis Pistol is no more.

There is only one reason for this decision, because we have been able to get the rights to use the original Bren Ten name and logo… The Fortis is now the Bren Ten!

We have to apologize for the last several weeks; we have been in sort of a self-imposed blackout while we have been negotiating the agreement to use the Bren Ten name. This is something that we really wanted, in order to make the release of our pistol truly the continuation of the legacy – and something that we have been working hard to make happen.

Of course, that is not the only thing we have been working on… the Fortis project has continued, it never has been in jeopardy. The malignant internet rumors are exactly that, rumors on the internet. We also have been working hard to keep our existing products going out of the door; we have contracts and support service for military weapons and the overwhelming demand for anything firearm related with the general public. Vltor makes a lot of parts that are the mainstay of many dealer’s product line, as well as OEM parts for other manufacturers and vendors – while the opportunity was certainly there to take advantage of the situation, we actually shut down our commercial internet sales and focused on keeping out product shipping to our dealers and distributors.

The Fortis was announced with the intention of it being one of our upcoming projects, during a time when our production was starting to outpace demands; there is no way we could have foreseen the unprecedented demand that has swept across the firearms industry. Even before the recent increase in product demand, we were in the process of bringing in new machinery and people; in the last few months we have brought in literally millions of dollars worth of new machinery, much of which is just for the new pistol. In one area alone, we have added four new horizontal milling machines, each with multiple pallet changers, we have modernized our metal finishing shop to keep up with the increased demands, yet not compromise an ounce of quality – and even with all of these steps to modernize and improve production, we have not cut a single job; in fact, we have added more production and development staff to continue production and support development.

So, here is the word from Rumor Control:

* The first issue of the Fortis Pistol will be released as the Bren Ten.
* There is nothing wrong with the design, it is working fine.
* Yep, we have magazines… lots of magazines.
* The project is not broke, nor has it been sold, it was fully funded from the start.
* “There must be something going on” – there was, we were waiting to see what name to mark on the slides of the new pistol, we like Bren Ten. We are sure you will too.

I bet that if S&W had the gall to commercialize a pistol in 10 mm with the cartridge renamed "40 S&W Auto Magnum" it would sell like hotcakes!!! :D

They already produce the 610 revolver in 10mm, and the 1076 is not that far out of production. They just need to market it as when your 40 is not powerful enough, get a 10. So the nomenclature change is a good idea, if it would work.
