Although I'm based in the UK, I am aware that various training systems exist on both sides of the pond, I'm versed in boxing and judo and have been known to dabble in various other arts, does anyone have any other recommendations?

I've recently been looking at Krav Maga and Kempo any advise on either would be great.

I like British Commando WW2 combatives, which is experiencing a rebirth, so to speak.
I taught a combatives seminar in Blackpool last summer (or at least what he Brits jokingly refer to as summer) and some very serious chaps attended.
Many of them do quite a bit of training in the U.K. and they can be reached at

I have a copy of an original WWII combat traning manuel, it is a very good read, a little out-dated but alot of it could be applied today.
I liked strike points you should target with a blade as it gives a break-down of why you should target those areas and the damage that will result from it.

IMO THE most practical self defense system for someone to learn quickly and be very effective is Jiu-Jitsu (preferably Brazilian) and probably some Wing Chun Kung-Fu.

A beginner or a person with a low skill level of Kung Fu is not very well equipped for a fight, but someone with a very high skill level can be VERY dominant in a fight, even against multiple opponents. I know what you hear, that stuff only happens in movies. Well I saw a guy in Static, TN takeout a bouncer and 5 other guys VERY quickly using Drunker Boxing style. Also saw his brother take out a roomful of guys in Columbia, KY at a New Years Eve party (a fight over a woman) Both of these guys had years of dedicated training.

My advice would be to start with the Jiu-Jitsu....

Check out Systema which is a Russian art , it looks deceptively easy but is very effective and is real world not sport oriented.
