April 1, 2009..... Ooops...

Guess I'm a little late for this dance. Shoulda read the date of the thread prior to posting........

Anywhoos........ What route did you take for your optics mounting issue?

I have an ARMS #18 mount on my M1A standard with a Nikon 6X42. I feel it's more of a niche gun, whereas a scout with a red dot could cover more bases.

EDIT: Dangit, who resurrected?

In any event, this is why I typed before realizing how old this thread is:

I hope you're not forgetting some leading contenders.

The best non-magnified optic for an Ultimak AK, in my estimation, is the Trijicon RMR - the one with no batteries required; uses fiber optic. Very small and light which is helpful for the forward-mount. But an Aimpoint of some flavor wouldn't be a terrible choice, the Micro T-1 you mention would come in close 2nd place to the RMR. But I'd take the RMR - it works in any light without batts. The Leupold Prismatic, unfortunately, has a severely diminished field of view at longer eye relief ranges like that. It's great up close, but not great at "IER" distances.

The best magnified optic would probably be one of your scout scopes - the two you mention (Leupold, Burris), or the one you didn't; the Nikon Omega 1.65-5x36mm. I'd take the latter due to versatility and better range of ER.

im running the ultimak/aimpoint combo on my m1a/m14 and im lovin' it. ultimak is quality. i like the co-wittness feature of the low front mount.
