Rem 700 trigger recall?

A friend of mine entered his car driver's side with his 30-06 pointed toward the floor on passenger side. It went off and shot a hole in the floor and the right front tire. He had a hard time explaining this to his brother, whose car he had borrowed. Not sure it was a 700, but I think it was.

He shouldn't have even touched the car with a loaded rifle. His fault! If he was hunting, he probably broke the law, whether intentional or not.

Mine discharged on closing the bolt. It was new. It was pointed in a safe direction. It went right back to big green HASTILY. This was before class action. They put a new trigger on it. I told the whole story on this forum somewhere years ago.

A real safety blocks the firing pin from moving. Anything else is just asking for trouble.
The problem with the Remington setup, is that, during failure, the safety is the only thing holding the sear into the firing pin. So, when the safety is taken off, the sear trips, and the firing pin is released.

Few years ago I was going to check the zero in my 700 .22-250. Had her in a lead sled, aligned it on the target and when I flicked the safety she went off. I'd heard they could do that, but discounted it as being more rare than it probably is. Replaced that thing with a Timney.

Scared the crap out of me.

Winchester & Springfield had the right idea by preventing the firing pin from moving if the sear engagement failed. Enfield had the same setup. Remington called their "safety" a safety, but it just prevents the trigger from being pulled. If the sear engagement fails the firing pin is going forward.

It’s fully legal to transport loaded firearms in many states, and common practice.
and even where its not (here), all the guns piled in the back of the dlnr enforcements pickups on opening day of bird season say plenty of folks are doing it lol.
IMO we can all say "well he shouldna dun that!" but at the same time, the thing still shouldn't have gone off.
