Remington 1911 R1

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but to make it from hearsay doesnt' seem fair to me. I do have one, it functions as it should, and it did so out of the box with McCormick and Rem mags. Absolutely no issues other than it shot low on my 12 yard range which might be a result of my low power reloads that I shoot in all my 1911's. Had to file the front sight down a bit. BTW, for R1 owners, the slide has a Novak cut should you want to change the sights.

Has anyone stripped one to see if there are any markings indicating forerign manufacturer?

Errornet = BS at the speed of light. I am acquainted with two different R1 owners. I do not hear the BS from them that I see on the web. One is a duffer like me, the other is an accomplished machinest and gunsmith who can't say enough good about value received. Before I posted any thing on the internet, I would have hands on experience.

Having nothing short of a good time with mine. Updated it with a longer trigger, and a caspian ambi safety (left hander here). shoots fine with 185 and 200 swc bullets. No problems with the remmie mags and loves my Colt GC mags also....

This is unlikely. What is more likely is that some magazines may work better in it than others. This is common with modern 1911s. With all the 1911 and magazine combinations out there, each made by a different company, to slightly different specs, tolerances and clearances, sometimes you have to experiment until you find a combination that works. It was a lot easier when only one company made them.

Also unlikely. It should be rated for any ammo for which there is a SAAMI spec.
From the Remington 1911 R-1 Owners Manual:
WARNING! The specific ammunition cartridge suitable for use in your
firearm is marked on the barrel. Different cartridge types and calibers
are not interchangeable. Do not use any ammunition other than the
designated cartridge specified for your handgun. Do not use ammunition
marked with Plus P, “+P” or any other high velocity or pressure
ammunition.

Using incorrect ammunition in your firearm can result in a severe
malfunction of your firearm or ammunition leading to personal
injury or death.

Interesting how all the internet "experts" will diss the Remington, probably without having ever seen or fired one.
All I can say is that mine has been nothing short perfect from the very first. As for mags, I use both Checkmates and McCormicks that work just fine. OTOH, some $5 cheapos couldn't even be loaded.

Clost to 4K rounds, factory and replade fired with NO issues whatsoever.

Here's the first 100 (WWB) I fired with it:

My buddy bought one and let me shoot it. Never any issues with fmj ammo and I'm ashamed to say I was more accurate with that gun out the box than I am now after six months of owning a 92fs.

I think it's funny that people are getting so worked up over the +P thing. My Kimber warned me off high pressure ammunition as well.

This is typical of all gun boards...lots of people more than happy to diss anything that cost less than their firearm. You get used to it after a while....or you start to believe that every Kel-tec is a hand grenade in handgun's clothing, that Hi-Point is a boat anchor with bullet firing capability and that Anything with Zamak in it is a deathwish to shoot (but they'll praise some big name .22 pistol they don't even realize is made of Zamak).

At the price, I may be 3-4 months from getting one, but dangit, I will get one.

The thing about +p is that it won't blow up a gun. it'll just wear it out faster. shoot regular, pack +p. at sd distances it won't be an issue

FWIW: After I got mine I wanted to know what type sight cut the slide had. Emailed and promptly got a reply: Novak. Recently emailed again asking how much for a front sight as I had filed mine down too much because it was shooting too low: reply....new on is being sent and if you still have problems let us know and we'll send you a shipping label to send it in. Sounds like they're trying to offer good service.

PS: I think my shooting too low is prob due to my low power reloads. Gotta try it with some factory ammo.

+P is just covering them, just like Springfield says (in their manual) no +P in 1911's under 5"

Yep, i did this back in June.

After I got mine I wanted to know what type sight cut the slide had.
The r1 has the same dovetail as a colt, gi spec. The Novak that fits that is the dcr01 not the lmc01. The 10-8 NM rear sight is what i'm going to use on my R1 build that i do this winter.

Quack,

Thanks for posting here and elsewhere your excellent analysis of the R1.

I have it on good authority, from an "aisle shark" at a gun show, that the R1 is made in taiwan from recycled bicycles and junked cars.

I have a lot of experience with Asian imports other than firearms. Shoddy merchandise comes from China, Malaysia, Vietnam, and sometimes the Phillipines. If it were made in Taiwan, the Switzerland of Asia, it would not have visible machining marks and would cost double the MSRP. Ditto for Korea.

So much for gunshow commandos and their lore. Remington says that the slides and frames are made in the USA. Is there any evidence to doubt this?

Thanks again for your objective posts.

not sure if Remington does it's own castings, or uses castings from Pine Tree (Ruger)

and for those wondering who "E-RPC LLC" is, it's a subsidiary under Remington Arms brand.

I've fired over 2,000 rounds through my 1911-R1. I bought it new, and had to send it back for a new slide stop and slide stop plunger spring. The time I picked up the phone to the time I had my gun on my doorstep was less than a week, which I appreciated.

Of course, the mags that come with the gun should be recycled or used for scrap metal. Mine didn't feed well. Note - Wilson 8 round mags don't lock. I bought Wilson 7 round mags and I haven't had a feed failure since.

Since Remington sent it back to me, I've fired 1,500 perfect rounds. I feel fine relying on this gun to fire. It feels as reliable as my revolver.

The stock grips are now used as a chew-toy for my dog. Instead I fitted the gun with some Pachmayr rubber wrap-around grips.

I think for around $600, this gun is a good value. I like the look, too. Very military, once you lose those stock grips. Except there is a massive, tacky "Remington" scrawled in cursive on the slide. I wish the could have been true to the original, where the brand name is the same size as the serial...

Quack - That is a huge hole in the burr hammer, who makes one that way?

Also, that is a very closely fitted beavertail...your handwork also?...very nice

Thanks!!!

it's a Caspian hammer. i chose it because it's different that the rest of the hammers usually seen. i also installed one on my TRP Champion that i did some work on.

yep, i fit the grip safety on my Christmas vacation. a LOT of filing to get the tangs down, and there wasn't too much blending that needed to be done. topped off with Formula 44/40 until i finish up with the gun and have it refinished.

Good to hear that you folks that actually have this gun are pleased with it. Dang, I really think I want one of these, if I can find one in stock....
