Since I haven't bought any Remington's famous golden bullet .22 bulk ammo in decades I got into a debate this afternoon as a fellow shooter told me it was excellent ammo.

Has Remington improved this loading or is he full of it?

It has been a couple of years since I last crossed paths with the stuff. The honorary nephew had some, shot it in my Ruger MkII. On the fourth magazine, the fouling had so slowed the bolt stop that it could not rise quickly enough to stop the bolt when the magazine ran dry. We sluiced out the gunk with CLP, swabbed down with paper towel, and relegated the Remington ammo to the bolt actions. I still won't buy the stuff.

For about $1.50 less I buy Winchester 555 rounds a box. fewer duds than golden bullet and a little more umph. And u get 55 MORE rounds vs. golden bullets 500. Did i mention its cheaper?

Seriously though, i wouldnt feed remingtons into any semi auto. they are the ONLY ammo my 10/22 doesn't like....

I have a couple of modified 10/22s that love the stuff. On the other hand they hate any Federal ammo. Poor groups, lots of misfires, and some stove pipes. Have a Savage Mark II that does pretty good with it but not as well as with Win. dynapoints and T-22. It doesn't like Federal either. Poor accuracy and an occasional dud.

It's just that .22 thing. They are independent little critters when it comes to what they like in ammo.

My Marvel conversion eats them like chocolate. I get one or two misfires per K. Clean every 1,000 or so.

I bought some Remington very recently for my MKIII - I was not pleased. it could simply be a bad match of gun to ammo but I had about 10% of the box either misfire, misfeed or fail to eject. I switched to Winchester and went through the whole box with no problems.

I'm working my way through a box of them. I won't buy them again, I'll stick with either the Federal or Winchester bulk packs. The gold crud does tend to gunk up the works.

I've had bad luck with misfeeds and fouling when I use Remington bulk over the last few years in my Henry .22 lever action. It loves Federal bulk though. I think it all just depends on your gun.

All of my .22's will eat almost anything EXCEPT Remington golden crud. BTW I have 15 rifles and 18 pistols/revolvers presently of various brands even a Jennings.:D A Walther P22 that likes WIN SuperX best and all my MKII Rugers like Win, Federal, CCI and PMC best.

Remingtons and my son's 10/22 don't mix at all. Just plain nasty. Federal Bulk does well. Federal AE doesn't feed well in the Ruger but works perfectly in my lever action Marlins.

Neither of my MkIIs like the Rem stuff. I still have a bunch of it in the bottom of one of my ammo cans, but it's my "OMG, I there is nothing else available" ammo.

I started using about a box a month of the Federal Bulk Packs when they were $9 and change (about four years ago). These days they are $15 or so, they still work great, and I'm still doing my best to use 100-125 rounds per week. Got in my allotment today. :)

Speaking of which, I need to stop by and pick up the next 3-4 month's supply. Thanks for the reminder. :)

I had occasion to shoot some of the old Remington Viper bulk right after shooting some Win Super X out of my S&W 6" Model 17, the groups with Viper were easily double the size of the Super X.

I get amazing groups (for me) with my Marlin bolt gun, but they were in a pack of 100 not 500 or 525, so maybe those bulk pack bullets are somehow different than mine, but they still both say "Remington Golden Bullets". I don't know how they perform in a semi-auto.

I've had a lot of failure-to-fire with Remmington .22 lr, even their match ammo. I refuse to buy their ammo because of it, its simply not worth all the duds. (it is not the gun's fault. All my .22's fail to fire a high amount of Remmington ammo, yet never have a problem with other ammo). It patterns good, when it fires.

I also see a lot of Remmington .22 ammo on the ground at the range that's been struck. Remmington .22 ammo is junk as far as I'm concerned, but then again, I'm pretty intolerant of mis-fires.

Golden Bullets are great in my Glock .22 conversion, and my Savage MkII is accurate as heck with them.
They also work great in my Buckmark, but my Ruger MkIII hates them.
As someone else mentioned, .22s are independent things.

My Walther P22 loves RGBs... almost as much as it loves MiniMags.

My 10/22 hates 'em... stovepipes, failures to fire or feed and generally less accurate than other rounds.

Rimfires are picky, you know.

I get a lot of misfires with them, but my Marlin 60 shoots GREAT groups with them. So it's a give/take relationship with me.

With my wife's High Standard Trophy, which is legondarily picky on ammo, it fires the rem/win/federal bulk packs just fine, as long as the are at least copper washed, if not copper plated. She shoots mostly CCI .22 shorts now though.

We also have some very old (60's) winchester (1000 round) bulk that only had lube on lead, no copper wash. In the Hgh Standard it would only take Two shots, then Fail to feed...two more shots,,,fail to feed. Each time you had to get in there and clean that excess lube out. It feeds fine in her Marlin Rifle however, It will take another 40 years to get rid of the rest of that batch if we only shoot it in the rifle...Oh wait, we still have a bunch of grandkids comming up to shooting age.

Not to steal this thread, but hermannr, unless your wife's HS is a Houston model it should only be fed standard velocity ammo.
As far as Remington ammo, too many misfires for me, and that's in 2 pistols and 2 rifles.

The last Remmy ammo I bought was some Vipers and some Golden Bullet Target rounds. I shot the GB only in my Bolt rifles and my 550-2 loves Vipers. The Rest I stopped buying in the early 1990's when the Quality dropped like a brick.

With the Remington 555 bulk ammo, I've experienced a few duds and a number of jams. I'd estimate those failures to be in the range of 5% or more. The Federal 375 count bulk pack has been 100% for me. I can't speak to accuracy though.

I shoot a LOT of Remington, Federal and Winchester 550 bulk pack in a number of 22 rifles and handguns.

Whenever I get a dud I pull the bullet and check if the case was primed. I get very few duds with Federal and Winchester but I have two small bottles full of unprimed Remington duds. I've still got thousands of rounds of Remington but when that's gone, no more Remington 22 or centerfire (trouble with Rem .223 also).

I have the best luck with Federal 22 in the bulk packs.

Shot about 50 today through a H&R Side Kick revolver. Shot good, couldn't see the target because of the grey cloud afterwards. Only problem I had was extracting the brass after I fired them.

I shot some Remington Gold, bulk 2 weeks ago. Only shot maybe 50 rounds out of it, and had 2 rounds with a low load, which resulted in a low shot (Was noticable from the report)
