Remington Pocket Revolver

Ever since I was a kid I always liked the 1st model Remington Pocket Revolver. As far as I know, nobody has made a replica of this model. Growing up my grandfather had one and when I saw one come up for sale for a reasonable price I finally got one for myself.

It's in decent shape for something this old, not much blue left but the outward appearance was void of any major pitting or rust. The cones/nipples and cylinder were in great shape also. The bore was the worst part of the gun, however, the rust seemed to brush out and I was surprised just how well it cleaned up.

So today I decided to go out and try this thing out. I have several ROA's and replica Colt's so shooting black powder pistols is nothing new to me. I wasn't expecting this little thing to put out such a loud bang. The recoil was modest but I was overshooting my mark at first. I figured out that if I placed my left hand thumb on the back of the grip and then wrap my entire right hand over the grip and my left thumb, then I was getting on target. Just as I was getting good results it started to rain so I stopped for the day. I had planned on just shooting this thing a few times and then put it back in the gun safe. But it ended up being a lot of fun so I'm going to try again.

Looks like a Colt Root revolver, I could be wrong though because I just did some research on it and they had spur triggers and a loading lever.

In James E. Severns' "The Collecting of Guns" he has the top revolver listed as the Remington-Beals Pocket 1st Model in .31 caliber. The other two pictured are the Pocket 2nd Model and the Pocket 3rd Model, also in .31 caliber.

Is the 3rd model the one we all see that Pietta makes? It seems slightly different in the pic posted. But then maybe Pietta isn't 100% accurate...

I believe that one is the Remington New Model Pocket revolver.

The 1st model Remington Beals also has different variations. The mechanism that rotates the cylinder can either be a round disc with a paw that sticks out to index the cylinder, or just a long paw that sticks out. Also some grips are more of a brown color where some seem to be a black (this is a early molded hard rubber material if my memory is correct). Perhaps the color variation is just from wear of the original finish.

Off topic but I now noticed the pistol on the bottom is a bit smaller than its predecessors. Is that because it's a .36 cal or did Remington reduce the size on that model?

And is the 3rd from the bottom double action?

I also don't see the 5 shot .36 cal police model. Wish someone would make one of those!

Currently the nipples are in good shape but it appears these early nipples/cones are different than any of the wrenches that I've seen available on today's market. Instead of having a wrench with outward flat slots (the middle cut out), these require something different (the outside edged cut out). The wrench would almost have to be a hollow tube then it would have to tapper down like a regular screwdriver with a hole down the middle. Kind of the reverse of the nipple wrenches we see today.

Yep that is a DA and I believe that is a .36 "Navy" on bottom.

I saw a police model some couple of years back and was impressed greatly.....until the price tag came into view and I had to beat up the old man next to me to take his nitro safe to prevent a heart attack.

There were repros made of the .36 "Navy" that were on that small frame rather than just pietta's NMA bored to .36 rather than .44. I want to say ASM but can't say for sure. The only one I handled felt nice but I have never shot one. I think my wife would enjoy one and made get her not to always roll her eyes when I take out my nasty/ stinky guns.

I have one of the .36 Navy pistols 5 1\2" barrel with the smaller frame. Mine says Euroarms on it. It feels more like a Colt SAA to me than a NMA. It real nice to shoot. Also have a conversion cylinder for it and shoot HBWC rounds. It is as accurate as I am.

A lot of the Remington Pocket pistols after 1872 came with both cartridge and cap and ball cylinders from the factory.
