I purchased a handgun thru the internet (individual, non FFL holder in another state). Received it thru an FFL, the seller has an inspection period in which it can be returned if not satisfied. If I elect to return it do I send it back to the seller or must it go thru an FFL on his end??

The way I see it once it was transferred it has become your gun, now you have to transfer it back to him. I don't see the difference if it is 2 days or 1 year. That would be an FFL for him to receive it.

It would be going back to the seller in another state, and would have to go to a FFL in the receiver's state.
