Since 300-600 yards is not really all that far these days you can buy almost any rifle/cartridge combination you want.
I'm shooting a surplus Model of 1917 in 30-06 and it's just fine for that task.
Remington makes a good rifle, savage makes a good rifle and I like their AccuTrigger. I own 2X Howa 1500 rifles which are extremely accurate in .223 and 30-06. Today even the entry level rifles are capable of MOA accuracy out at intermediate distances so but something you like and can afford. Buy a fairly good piece of glass and shoot quality match ammo and you will have a lot of fun and success out to 600 yards. (eventually)
