Rifle/handgun pairs?

Ah yes. The 44-40. If I had to pick an all-around cartridge, that would be it. It started out as a rifle cartridge for which there is a plethora of rifle loading data and it is not wasted in a handgun.

The wife and I each have a Puma Bounty Hunter in 44-40 and we have a Rossi rifle in that caliber. I will add an Uberti top break in 44-40 to round out that system shortly. (Off Topic Advice: For reloading the 44-40's thin skinned case, I highly recommend using a Lee factory crimping die instead of any other crimping die. I haven't lost a single case to crush since I started using one.)

If I'm gonna lug a handgun and a rifle, I wouldn't limit myself to a lesser cartridge in the long gun.

Is there a relevant non-contextual way of determining "lesser"?

E.g. I have some steel plate targets that are rated for .44 magnum and lower. If that's what I'm shooting, .308 is a lesser cartridge because it is not able to hit my targets without causing undesirable results. 9x19 from a carbine is infinitely better than 7.62x51 (for that use).

It's a constantly moving target, too. .22LR is better than .308 for squirrels, and for shooting silenced, but .308 is better than .22lr for ranges over perhaps 75 yards, and deer hunting. .45-70 is better than either of those if the goal is to load black powder cartridges and dump some smoke.

I see a reoccurring theme of hunters assuming that all guns are for hunting, and specifically their kind of hunting. That perhaps extends to any class of user (do CAS shooters assume all guns are for CAS?) but it is obviously a thing amongst hunters. Many shooters never hunt.

I plan on getting the ultimate handgun/long gun combo . . . just as soon as that Hi Point .380 carbine comes out. :D

My first handgun was a Python.
I wanted a rifle in that caliber so i got the Marlin.
Then I wanted a semi-auto and I was able to pick up a Coonan.
I load for the Coonan so I don't need to sort them.
I am happy now.

My 9mm & .40S&W AR carbines that take Glock mags go nicely with my Glock 17 and 22.

I also have .44Mag & .357Mag revolvers and lever guns to match.
