rubber grips for older ruger security six

Hello,
I am new to this forum. I have enjoyed reading many of the posts on here.

I have a question for anyone that may be able to help. My daughter has an older (1973 I believe) Ruger Security Six 2.75" bbl.
I have tried to find some after market rubber grips to lesson the trauma to her hand. It is a .357 and with hot ammo has a fair kick, being it is not a large gun to begin with.

In talking to a number of folks that seem to know what they are talking about, they all say "good luck". The handle on this gun has a hump in the middle unlike the newer ones and the butt has a slight ducks tail (for lack of a better definition)

Does any one know if it is possible to find grips like Hogue, Pachmayr etc. that will properly fit this gun?

I have far more questions than answers, so I appreciate any help.

Call Pachmayer.

Worst case is you grind off the bump.

Tyler T grips help a bit but as for the backstrap I suggest takeing the gun to a gun shop that has lot of used rubber grips from Houge, Pachmayer, and others. Try on one side of the grip and see if on the inside there is enough room to grind off some of the rubber and fit the grips to the gun.

Same goes if you want wood grips.

Hello,
I'm new here too, same join date as you.
I also have a Security Six, with Pachmyers, I checked their site and they seem to go as far back as serial# starting at 151.:banghead: If yours is lower you may want to check with custom grip mfgr's or haunt the used firearms-accessories threads.
Myself, I'd start my search by going to a good gunshop-gunsmith, (or two) and deal with them, they may have something or access to a supplier. You'll pay for their service but the upside is that you may get to try a few models for fit and style before dropping your money on the counter.
Good luck and if you find a source, post it here for the rest of us.

After researching some more last night I realized we were dealing with a 150. These grips are different than 151 and above. Yes, mine is like yours deafsmith. I do not know when rubber grips first came out, that may answer my question as to whether I will be able to find some or not.

If I find some, I will certainly post as I cannot imagine there are not a lot of folks out there in my situation.

I have another low back, a 4 incher. When I bought it, at $302, tax included, I thought it was a ... well a Security Six. When I got home I had a pair of Ruger target stocks for the SS. Imagine my shock when they didn't fit!

So I researched and found out what a 'low back' was. And that's how I ended up collecting the 2 2/3 incher. Saw it for sale at $299 so I bought it to.

And both of these guns are tight, good blueing, and just a bit of wear. I suspect hard times are forceing some people to sell their guns.

Anyway, I'll look at my stash of Ruger grips tomorrow and see if there is any way to modify them to fit a low-back.

I realized mine is a #150xxxx. Ruger and no one else made rubber grips for this gun. To modify the gun is not something I would do. I took it to the range the other day for my first time and with Rem. 125 gr. SJHP it was not fun to shoot after awhile. Rubber grips sure would be nice, I may try and modify some larger grips. I know now why they say the cursed 150. This gun was going to be given to my daughter, but not now.

I also owned a pre-151 Security Six and sold it for this exact reason. It was a great gun in all other regards, I'd not hesitate to try another "newer" one.

One thing you might try to tame it a bit is changing ammo. I've done this with my SP-101 and it's manageable with Speer 135 grain GDHP's. They actually make it act more like a 9mm in a .357 revolver. Yeah, they're .357's, but that doesn't mean we need to use the most rompin-stompin ammo in them for every single purpose.

Try shooting a lighter load. I normally practice with .38 spl 158 swc's in my smaller frame .357's. For the 150 series SS check on evil bay for grips. I have seen them their before.

for $1.99 go to the local drug store and purchase a package of wide rubber bands. Yes, rubber bands. Have her slip them on, one at a time, rotate and back, etc, and feel where she needs to build up support. Within an hour she'll have the most customized grip imaginable and never take them off. I did this for kicks a couple of years ago with a GP100. Several days later, shooting Buffalo Bore 200 gn offhand at a 25 yard target, first shot was a bulls-eye! Those rubber bands are still on there and that grip feels great every time!

No one currently makes grips for the 150 pre-fix guns. Jay Scott used to make a pair of grips they fit both the 150 and 151 pre-fix guns although they are walnut and not rubber. You can still find them on on e-bay or Gun Broker occasionally. The easiest way to tell if the fit both pre-fix guns is they have two holes for the grip pin and the bottom slightly flares out. Here are some pics of the Jay Scott grips i bought off e-bay several years back.

Or you can modify the grip frame to accept 151 pre-fix grips. It's fairly simple to do and took about an hour. I did a blued SS several years ago and no one ever knew it was modified until i told them. I used a bench grinder to rough it into shape then a Dremel and hand files for the final shaping. After sanding the worked area smooth and rebluing it looked factory. See the pics below for the difference in the grip shape. They are on my 151 pre-fixgun.

Cranky CJ, those are made for a 151 prefix Security Six I have two of them with hogue grips, but they won't fit on the 150 prefix models.
