I picked this 77/357 up almost on a whim...As it turns out, its a pretty incredible and versatile little rifle. It handles so well, some times I pull it out just to shoulder the thing. On the range its an absolute blast to shoot.
I also turned it into my bug-out, go to gun...

Even though as the owner of a 223 and 30-06 all weather rugers who has absolutely need for one of these I plan to buy one as soon as possible.

True story. I bought a 77/44 a year ago actually wanting a 357 then a week later ruger announces the 77/357

Do you mind me asking how much is a real world price because I really want one? Looks real handy and pretty! I wonder if a laminate stock is possible in the future. That would be the perfect truck gun for me since my carry guns are usually .357s.

Nice photos, Mike! good3.gif

You're making me think that my Winchester Trapper .357 needs a pal... :D

Also, I see you got one of those Allen butt cuffs with the pouch. I got one for my Trapper, and I liked it so much, I also got a couple for my Remington 597 and one of my 10/22's...

.

This is my next long gun purchase, it looks like the perfect woods gun for my favored haunts. If you don't mind me asking, I'm curious about your chosen setup. What kind of sling and stock pouch (?) is that? Also, I've heard that the length of the barrel can really maximize the potential of the .357. What's your preferred load?

EDIT: sorry, should have read through the thread more closely. I see it's an Allen butt-cuff.

I love these! I have a couple of Winchester Trappers that are a hoot to shoot, but I could see adding one of these....

Niiiiiice! I'm not a bolt-gun person (i've never shot one) but if it's a format you're used to, great. A bit of reassurance out in the country, and a real nice whitetail/ small hog gun at 50 yards, i bet. I think I'm a bit jealous.

I'm not going to lie, at first when Ruger reintroduced the 77/44 and then came out with the 77/357 I thought they sounded pretty outlandish, I mean I just couldn't figure out why someone would want a rifle, especially a bolt rifle in a pistol caliber, then I began crunching the numbers and looking at the velocity increase out of a rifle barrel and took into consideration the simplicity of the M77/22H action and in the end I saw the light. I've been thinking that one of these would make an excellent brush gun or even a suppressor host. Another thing that initially concerned me was the capacity. At the time I really couldn't get past the 4+1 and 5+1 capacity but then I made the comparison to a trapper length PC lever action carbine such as a Rossi R92 that had a 6+1 capacity and figured that the reduction of 1 or 2 rounds was worth what was gained by the more simplistic operation and function of the bolt action, which is a big deal to me. (I hope all of this makes sense).

Looks like a fun gun! Congrats.

Ballistically speaking, what is the advantage of the 357 over the 44, if there is one?

Less recoil. Cheaper more widely avalible "special" loads, lower component costs.

Believe it or not a 77/44 can get to be kind if punishing to shoot from the bench with warm loads.

My only dissatisfaction with the gun is that it uses that goofy split bolt beefed up rimfire action of the 77/22h instead of a standard Mauser derived 77 action. But I still plan to buy one with the idea of suppressing it one day with a trijicon reflex on top

I really want one of these rifles. Get it threaded and use it with a suppressor! Talk about stupid quiet and cheap! :D

Awesome, I'm glad to see more of these popping up. I love my 77/44 a lot more than I thought I would. Want to get the walnut stock for it.

P.S. read up on shimming the two halves of the bolt with a ~.005" shim, it improves accuracy.

Please share a link or post the information. That really piques my curiosity.

This may be a stupid questions, but hey, I'm half asleep on a Monday after getting back from the gym:

Will the 77/.357 take the .38 Special loads for cheap fun, and how well do they perform?

I assume these can't be reamed to 357 Max because of the Mags. Pity. 357 Max makes for a reach out and touch in pistol caliber with 38 special and 357 Mag for plinking. The H&R guys are mad on their 357 Max Handis.

Fella's:

I really hope someone from Ruger marketing moniters these forums. I owned an early 77/22, it was a good gun - but. Along came CZ with a left hand bolt .22 rimfire that shot as well & the Ruger became history.

I'd like to have both a 77/22 & this .357, I really would - but Ruger refuses to release these guns with a left hand bolt. And since it's my money, I spend it on products that not only perform well, but are ergonomically correct for me. Furthermore, in this age of CNC, I have a very hard time believing that a mirror-image receiver is all that expensive to produce. Yeah, yeah, I know the stock's different too, but so what? Savage can manage to do it with a gun that sells for well under what the 77/22 does. I owned one also & will agree that it's not as nice as the Ruger, nor should it be at the price point it sells for. But it does exist.

C'mon Ruger, you're giving about ten percent of the population nothing but lip service with a very few 77 centerfires. Time to grow your market.

I picked one up back in the early part of the year. I paid $600 for it.

With loads it likes, its a good shooter. Mine doesnt seem to like "heavier" bullets, but to be fair, Ive really only tried a couple of different loads with them so far. It does like 125 grainers though, and Ive shot a number of quarter sized groups at 50 yards with them. At 100 yards, I was getting tight fist sized groups.

Mine doesnt seem to like the .38's. Accuracy with my 158 grain LSWC reloads was not very encouraging. I also had feed issues with the .38's, with "rimlock" being the main problem. Once they lock up, it can take some fiddling to get them unlocked, and youre not doing it with the mag in the gun.

Right now, I have a 4x Leupold on mine, and it works well.

The factory sights are fine if you like that type, but I dont find them precise enough as the range opens up.

Im a big fan of peep sights, and I tried one of the NECG peep sights, and found it lacking. While it seems well made, its fiddly to get zeroed, tends to block out your field of view, and needs to be mounted on the more forward of the two scope mounting points, which puts it farther away from your eye than I like. The reason it needs to be in that position is, if its on the rear one, where it really needs to be, it interferes with working the bolt.

As was mentioned, the spare mags are expensive, and they seem to be cheaply made.

Fit and finish on the gun itself is good, and its a very handy little rifle. I just wish they would offer a buttplate as an option. The recoil pad is unnecessary, and makes the LOP to long. This really isnt a defect, just something all the makers seem to do anymore, and its annoying if you use the gun for anything but shooting off a bench.

I have no info.... I can only say...

I want a Ruger Blackhawk 357 with 9mm conversion cylinder along with the 77/357 rifle.

Looks nice! I hope these remain available for a while, as I have other budgetary goals through the summer of 2013.
