Hey gang! :) Got my new Lipsey's special edition Ruger GP100 in today:

20171229_183705-1.jpg

It's the 5" half-lug barrel blued model with smooth walnut target stocks and a gold bead sight chambered in .357 magnum, 6 shot cylinder. Here is my little review on it! I apologize for the low quality pictures, bad lighting in here and using my old camera phone.

So first the fit and finish is very good all the way around. There are the standard machining and casting marks in the frame and other areas, but everything you'd see on the outside during normal use is really nice. No better or worse than a standard GP100, decent bluing and altogether pretty good.

Barrel to cylinder gap is very tight on this model, we'll call it .0025" on all chambers. I have never owned a factory Ruger this tight and hopefully it will lead to good velocity and energy numbers. During today's shooting the tight gap did not seem to affect function at all, even after multiple cylinders of full power .357 magnum ammo. Lock up and timing are spot on, with no endshake. Really really nice in that regard.

Now a word on the walnut grips. First off the set I got seem to be of a paler color over the ones in the ads and videos I've seen. Also, it is missing one of two locator pins that together with the large main pin that goes through the grip frame holds the grips in place. When you shake the gun there is a tiny bit of rattle in the grips, even with the grip screw snugged up (though not tight enough to crack the wood). I will be calling Ruger or Lipsey's to speak with them about the grips, why they look different over the advertised models and also to talk about the missing pin.

The grips do feel really nice in the hand, though. They are actually rather thin. I was expecting them to fill out the hand like Pachmayr presentation grips, but they really don't. There was also some sliding during shooting of some Federal 357B 125 grainers, which many of you know is a hot number of a cartridge. Even with my firmest grip, my hands would work up the grip with each shot. Some checkering might have been a good idea with these but it might well be just my hand size or grip. The grips did not interfere with either HKS or Safariland speedloaders. I hope the rattle is just due to the missing pin, hopefully it doesn't get worse over time with shooting hot loads. I sometimes ponder whether the GP100 grip nub system really is superior to a standard grip frame.

The gold bead front sight is interesting. It is kind of small but I predict it will make for a great target sight. I did my best to take a picture of it:

It isn't a matte bead but has a radial pattern on it... kind of hard to explain. I might dress it with an Arkansas stone to try and matte it a bit. It has the standard U-notch white outline rear sight as these guns have had since the 80's, and works well.

The trigger is really nice. Single action is really nice. I don't have a trigger pull gauge, but I'd guess three pounds. No creep or grit, breaks very clean. Double action feels standard, a rather long pull with a bit of staging at the end before the hammer breaks, but not overly heavy or gritty. It should smooth out wonderfully. I once had a 6" full-lug stainless GP100 that felt like this and over the years of lots of shooting and millions of dry fires (with snap caps) the trigger got flat out buttery, and I mean that in the best possible sense.

Speaking of the barrel, guys I'm here to tell you, this 5" half-lug is perhaps the greatest barrel configuration I have EVER felt on a GP100. I was thinking it might be a bit too long but it is not. Looks and feels only a little longer than a 4" barrel (hell I guess because it is) and it feels much less unwieldy over the 6" full lugs. It balances just wonderfully, and will give a boost in the velocity and energy numbers over a 4" barrel. Time will tell how well it sits on a belt but I think it will be fine. I plan to get a nice thumb break law enforcement style holster for it soon. The ejector star is not blued, it is shiny steel, hopefully stainless steel.

I shot about 70 rounds in the desert today after picking it up and swabbing the chambers and bore. Shot 12 rounds of Federal 357B 125 grain and a box of Fiocchi 142 grain truncated cone, all warm stuff. Functioned nicely with no hang ups. The gun is breaking in and the cylinder is a touch stiff on open and close, but it just needs to dig that little ditch in the recoil shield and it will be smooth I'm sure. We already talked about how the grips felt, still pining for a bit of texture but overall not bad.

All in all I am pleased to have another GP100 around. This one has the classic styling of the old Security Six and looks so nice, and has great features. I love the barrel configuration so much, it's awesome. Hopefully Ruger or Lipsey's can set the grip situation straight, I'm sure they will, they're good peoples.

Gang you have yourselves a safe and merry new years!!

looks nice. Eagle grips makes a similar style grip, but holds tight with the heaviest Buffalo Bore loads. Happy to see ruger making this GP. I know I have been waiting 12 years for it. Hope they offer the grip itself for sale. The Eagle is nice, but its also expensive.

Thanks for the write up. I've been waiting for a review on these.

No problem!

Good gun but the grips probably weren't executed all that well. I just took an Arkansas stone to the front bead, really helped out. It was just too shiny and reflective. This dulled it down, making for a better defined dot.

This is the main reason I still prefer the Security Six/Redhawk over the GP and SRH. I was on the fence about grabbing one of these instead of the new 8 shot Redhawk. As nice as this GP is, I think your input has convinced me to go with the Redhawk. I'll post a review when I get it.
Thanks for the write up!

Good call. I still don't understand the short barrel 8-shot Redhawks, but now that they have longer barrels available, seems a good choice, and you don't have to worry about the grips. I think the GP100 grips were a good thing on paper but they never really panned out in real life, especially when you consider many manufacturers did not adapt their grips to fit the GP100. Grip choices are much more limited compared to S&W offerings.

Ya, I'm getting the 5.5", wish they offered a 7.5 though........:(

Nice write-up of the new GP100! I would have to agree with you that while I like the overall shape of the new grips they do appear to be rather pale like they weren't stained. Like the 5.5" barrel and the half lug configuration. Seems like a good way to go in terms of length and balance.

Exactly. I really don't ever recall seeing walnut grips this pale, and like I said they look nothing like what was advertised. Even in the YouTube video from Lipsey showing the guns in person, they all had nice dark rich wood...

That and the dovetailed front gold bead sight. I really don't think I'm liking it. For whatever reason, most likely cost, they did away with the quick change plunger front sight system and hence all the aftermarket front sights for the gun. I would just swap it with the orange insert front sight from Ruger but no, that isn't an option now and shopruger.com shows no alternative front sights for the dovetailed GP100s... very disappointing.

Not feeling this one, gang. I'm just giving you my honest opinion here. I wouldn't buy one of these sight unseen. See if you're happy with how the grips look, check for looseness, and make sure you like the gold bead front sight because that's all you're going to be able to have on this gun. I DO like the barrel configuration and it appears to be a well made and tight GP, as good as any I've owned or handled.

Let's hope Ruger can held me out with the grips. I'll call them after the New Year and see what they can do. I've got several new Rugers I'd like to purchase but after this and my new LCP-II breaking hard after firing 80 rounds of ball ammo, just not too compelled to keep forking over my hard earned cash.

Walnut varies in color and does not stain well, because the grain is very open and stringy. Grain filler would be needed but then would block the stain from absorbing. This gun looks amazing, but I knew right away that I would not retain the grips. The large Altamont Lett style is hard to beat on this gun and you get to romance the inserts.

Thanks for the review. I was excited about the half lug/5 inch barrel look and making it an ounce lighter than the 4 inch GP 357 and probably better balanced than my 5 inch full lug GP. The grips also looked good in the photos although checkering would have been nice. I'm disappointed they're getting away from the plunger system front sight. I don't think the front bead would work with my eyesight. Extensive shooting hand surgery due to a rheumatoid issue is why I didn't impulsively order one of these. If I didn't like the grips I'd put on the walnut checkered Altamont like Real Gun mentioned. IMG_0775.JPG

As for the grip color, I have installed American walnut handrails a few times, and unstained it can certainly be very pale. They stain well. I have a 1911 grip I made from some left over rail with an oil finish thats almost yellow, but has darkened over the years.

Thanks for the write up. I dearly love my GP100's! I sold one off years ago and regretted it terribly. Now there are two residing at my home which will never get sold. Your example is beautiful....I'm sure it shoots as well as it looks too.....

Nice review nice pistol. I do not think you have anything to worry about Ruger will make this right for you.

That is the best looking Ruger I’ve ever seen. That should have been the GP100 base model! I like the pale grips because they contrast with the dark steel.

How does it handle compared to a S&W 686 or 66 of similar barrel length? How about compared to the Security Six (of which I am a big fan)

I am thinking that comparison would rely a great deal on the grips and barrel lengths. I am guessing this gun is at its best at the 5" shown. Comparisons would be very subjective.

Some people would complain if hung with a new rope! IMHO, this new half lug .44Spl GP is probably one of the best DA configurations I've ever handled. It is light at 38oz, an ounce heavier than my Old Model Blackhawk 4 5/8" with its aluminum grip frame and an ounce lighter than a 6½" fixed sight N-frame .44Spl. It balances and handles wonderfully and the best thing about it is the grips. For many years I've been wanting a Roper style grip on an SRH/GP and after not wanting to pay $400-$1000 to have a set made, they are finally here. They're not perfect but they're pretty damned good! The color? Who gives a rat's ass? It's walnut. If you don't like the color, refinish them. The front sight is not my first choice either but it's a damned sight better than the fiber optic they put on the previous .44Spl's. In fact, I bought two Novak gold bead front sights to replace those. Give the aftermarket a little time and we'll have all the replacement front sights we can stand. Personally, I want a black post.

That said, anyone who wants to part with their walnut Roper grips, let me know, I'll buy them from you.

I hate to break it to you but that's a lighting issue. Look at the rest of the pic. It is very, very dark.
