Ruger P97DC composite frame question

I may have buggered my new 45 before having a chance to shoot it. I cleaned the new gun two days ago and must have gotten something on the frame. I noticed last night that the composite frame has what appears to be spots and runs where something has eaten into the frame.
I've tried plastic polish to no avail. Is there a product that will allow me to polish these spots out? Damage is only cosmetic but I'm not real happy about it.

Just curious--since I've been considering one of these pistols--what did you use?

They're supposed to be proof against normal gun cleaning products...

I have been fooling with one for a while now--about 1100 rounds through it in a few months. I am hard pressed to imagine what you might have used that would attack the frame with any success.

If concerned you might call Mike Smisko at Ruger/Scottsdale and tell him what kind of witches' brew you were using.

The offending cleaner turned out to be Hoppies bore scrubber. I've used it on other guns for a long time with no problems but it is definitely the problem this time. Don't ask how I know for sure.

Buy the way, went to the range after work yesterday and this 45 is a keeper. It will hold 3" at 25 yards from the bench. Had two of failers to feed out of 150 rounds of 200 gr. lead swc reloads (not bad for a new gun). Trigger was good.

Call Ruger, they suggested warm oil rubbed in with very fine steel wool. Also told me I could try fine Scotch-bright with warm oil. I'll give it a try tonight.

Tex I had a simular experience on my P95 before I traded up to the 97. I used fiberglass body filler from the auto section of Wallyworld. I polished it with fiberglass car body sandpaper (2000 grit I think) and topped it with some turdle wax I had under the sink. The frame now shines like a Corvette and its back to that jet black color it started as.

Tex ..... just to add that I rate the P97 along with my P95 ....... two ''fugly'' guns but .. they sure do shoot well.

Not as yet had anything ''eat'' my polymer!!

Well, the warm oil and 0000 steel wool did the trick. Apparently the Hoppies bore scrubber dries out the composite, discoloring and making it appear to be etched. There are other cleaners that will do the same thing so I will be very careful from now on. Thanks for the suggestions, The wax idea sounds like a good one.

Well, the warm oil and 0000 steel wool did the trick.

This is good information to know. With three P-series Rugers of the polymer variety, I'm sure I'll need this sometime in the future.
