I am looking at getting a SA revolver and I really like the Ruger SS Vaquero. But I have heard mixed things about Ruger's quality control these days. I have seen two new SS GP-100s with questionable fit and finish. It looked like they shaved to much metal off in some areas on both the samples I saw. If I bought a new Vaquero it would have to be ordered. I would hate like hell to pay $600 for a gun and have the fit and finish look like crap. I have also come across some people that said they would not buy anything new from Ruger now days. So I ask is Ruger building more lemons then gems? Should I take a chance and buy a new Vaquero?

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new Ruger today. They are probably the best value for the dollar in this economy.

Any company will put out a lemon every so often.

Having owned a few recent production Rugers I have noted no QC problems. I havent heard anything bad about the revolvers either.

I have several Ruger handguns. Never had a problem with any of them. Top notch company in my estimation.

I'd buy from them without any hesitation.

I don't think Ruger is any better or worse than it has ever been. If anything, the MkII pistols look nicer, but I think the trigger pull on some of their weapons is grainy and stiff at best. Don't seem to recall this being so years back.

Ruger makes some good stuff, but they generally need lockwork polishing at a minimum right out of the box. Always second tier to Smith in my opinion.

I bought a NIB GP 100 a few years back, and I had one issue with it. Ruger picked it up on their dime, had for about three weeks, and sent it back running like a swiss watch.

More rounds fired than I can recall later, and its still going strong. Great products and customer service.

I have bought 2 Rugers in the past year (SP101 & SR9C) and they are as reliable, accurate and as well made as my old Rugers after 100s of rds through each.

Bought a Single Six earlier this year. Fantastic gun. I would not hesitate to buy another, or a Vaquero.

No doubt that "person" was probably a fan boy of some other brand. Never had an issue with any Ruger products I have that required me returning it. I did have a slide release issue on a P89. A quick call and I had one in 3 days. I, personally would not hesitate to buy another Ruger.

I say go buy your Vaquero. Look it over good before purchase. The dealer can always send it back to their distributor and exchange for another if you're not happy.

"It looked like they shaved to much metal off in some areas..." That is a pretty vague statement to use to question Ruger's QC. Metal gets "shaved" off every gun ever made in one way or another. Do you have pictures of the areas you are talking about?

I have two out of three Ruger Old Army revolvers with misaligned chambers. ! out of three P89s with a firing pin so badly off center as to cause misfires. 1 out of 2 Blackhawks 357s with a very badly mis-adjusted trigger. 1 out of 2 Blackhawk 357s with excessive cylinder end play. Yes, Ruger can gum it up like anybody else. Their reputation for after purchase service is better than Taurus' though. There is something to be said for having the gun in hand for inspection before purchase.

i wouldnt hesitate at all. ruger is one of my favorite gun manufacturers and i have several more guns on my list to buy that will come from ruger.

Just bought a new Blackhawk in 45 ACP/45 Colt about a month ago. Fit and finish is as good or better than any of my high dollar S&W's. Looks great and shoots great out of both cylinders.

I only have 2 S&Ws left in my collection but,,,,,,, 50 Ruger revolvers and 3 Ruger semis from 9mm-45 including revolvers da/sa,and just plain Blawkhawks and Single Sixes.

Ruger makes good guns. I've owned a few, most recently an LCR. They have all been well made, accurate, and reliable.

Run it through the check out procedure in the sticky in this forum. One thing, I can attest that Ruger does work with their customers. They don't advertize a lifetime warranty or anything, but they will make things right. I've owned 9 Rugers, still have 7 of 'em, and have only had to have parts sent to me, free of charge. Haven't bought one in a while. Last one was a SP101 which was new in 2003.

I am not a big Ruger fan, but I will say their handguns are MUCH better than their shotguns. Had a Security Six and still have a MKII - it does a decent job

Never owned a red label and the only rifle I've owned is my 10/22. I've got two blackhawks, an Old Army, a P85, a P90, and a Mk 2. I HAVE owned a Security Six, and a P95. I did have a little problem with the P95 in that it would always seem to fail to extract one out of about 150 rounds. Could never figure it out and there was a revolver I wanted more than that gun, so I traded it off. I later got the P85 used from a guy at work. It's perfect.

So, I guess out of 8 handguns, I've had one that wasn't quite right. I could have gotten Ruger to look it over, but I wasn't that in love with it anyway and wanted a snubby since I'd just gotten my carry permit.

Happy with the Redhawk that I ordered based solely on THR opinions of Ruger revolvers. Action not close to Colt or Smith, but the thing is built like a tank. I knew that before I bought it. Very reliable and field tested. Next purchase will be a Ruger SA revolver. IMO Ruger is turning out the best gun for the money in the current environment.

I can't say enough good about Ruger's customer service. Fix what is wrong, ship it back. They will even walk you through a complex Mark III assembly problem (customer caused) over the phone. Taurus, on the other hand, sucks. Fifteen examples in the past year. Latest, we shipped a "Judge" with vastly oversized chamber throats back (after talking to the tech about it and he agreed to replace the cylinder) to Taurus. Letter explaining what was wrong (excessive leading due to gas cutting)......gun came back. Tech letter returned with it said, "jams, adjusted". Didn't do a damn thing. Customer, like us in the shop, most unhappy.
Ordered a scope mount from them once. Gave my credit card number. Was told it would ship next day. Three months later I remembered the order. Called them. "On backorder". When I asked them how that could be when it was in stock when I ordered and they'd send it out next day they said, "must have been sold before we could ship". Many problems with the 94 series of revolvers. Mostly lockup. Just got one back after the second trip back to the factory...or service center...still has a "sticky" bolt.
Ruger has never disappointed us with any warranty or other repair work. Also, they are next to last in the number of guns we've had to ship back.
O.K. Taurus lovers, take your shot. I have one left that I love...a Tracker 17 and it is everything I could want in a plinker/small varmint gun. I've had P85s, and other autos and they are fine. If you get a good one, rejoice. I'd stick with the medium frame revolvers and the autos and avoid the older Judges and 94s. I also have a late Judge with properly sized chamber throats and it is fine.
I look for abused Rugers and pick them up every time I can if the price is right. Ruger makes them right and I've never paid for anything other than shipping.

No worries on Ruger. I've been a Ruger man for nearly 30 years. I own.....

2 Blackhawks
2 old model Vaqueros
2 new model Vaqueros
P-95
LCP

LD45

I guarantee you, the day before Ruger sold his first pistol, somebody was saying their quality control had slipped, and they were better in the "old days."

Besides. I don't know about where you're buying, but if I was to order something, and it wasn't up to my standards when it came in, I'd say "Send it back."

Ruger makes excellent handguns and stands behind their products.

Unlike some companies who have little to no QA/QC, simply deny their products have flaws or issues, charge exhorbitant prices for their guns to cover multiple returns for service and are pushing junk wearing a famous trademark - Ruger publicly recalls problem products and sends extra mags or other goodies for your trouble - and fixes the flaw as well.

The Ruger revolvers are the only new production revolvers that are suitable for serious purpose, IMO. They are the only new revolvers that I'll purchase in any case. TJ
