I was at the range today shootin' the bull (I can't shoot a gun anymore with the crowds lined up) and in walks a young man out of breath desperately looking for some .40 S&W ammo for his pistol. "Do you have any .40 S&W ammo? I have to stock up before they pass that ammo tax in the next stimulus bill."

Well, I'm wondering what ammo tax he is talking about. I try to stay reasonably well informed but maybe I am missing something. I know there has been talk of taxing ammo, but I surely haven't heard of anything concrete yet. My guess is that either the gun shop where he purchased his gun or someone where he works is spreading the fear. I think this is at the center of the ammo shortage - a lot of misinformation. I was going to buy a little more Federal .22 bulk ammo to feed my Rugers but even that is dried up. I guess I'll just set back and watch the festivities until things calm down.

Don't know about the bill but all I do know is the 2 guns I shoot I am having a hard time getting ammo for (45acp,9mm) but every store I look in I can find all the 40sw a guy could stand to buy. It is every where here.

Best not to react to Henny Penny.

I'd look to NRA-ILA or GOA or JPFO before I'd act based on "a young man out of breath desperately looking".

I don't know where people are getting this stuff. My nephew recently tried to inform me that there is gonna be a 500% ammo tax.

--He heard this from a well uninformed friend.

Probably stems from the fact that as a member of the IL legislature, Obama favored a very similar 500% tax on firearms, I do believe.

Some shrink back in the day once claimed that the best predictor of future events is the past. Or something like that....

A 500% increase in the current excise duty on firearms, NOT a 500% tax on firearns.

A comment, some years ago........and look I;m not even outf breath.....

I bet the gentleman had probably just been told that by someone who just by chance had some ammo he no longer needed and would be happy to sell it.

As far as I know - there is nothing concrete in the works. However, the rumor of an impending 'ammo tax' has been very pervasive and pernicious in the industry and I hear it in a lot of places.

I have heard the same thing about a huge ammo tax many times. I wonder if it is as realistic a possibility as many think. It would effect every gun owner and shooter, from hunter to competitor to plinker. This would effectively unify the entire firearms community in the fight for our rights. I think politically it would be a risky and stupid move for the anti's. The divide, conquer and chip away approach is far more effective. Better to keep us fragmented in different camps and then slowly, quietly, ban one kind of gun or caliber at a time until all that is left is your childhood Daisy.

Tax-Max-hooey.

Let em tax the stuff, I dont care anymore. I dont run out of breath running about like chicken little.

I just pull orders and execute buys and get them shipped to the door.

There are just absolutely stacks and pallets of .40 all over the state where I am. Makes me wonder if I make mistake passing up on the .40? Nah, more than happy with the nice green box stuffed with 45 ACP.

I dont care about 20 dollar bread, 10 dollar gallon gas or any of that. I just pay the bills and pick up the rest.

I'd say when it comes to gun related issues (for the time being), if you can't read about it, it's a lie.

Sorry, but I can't see Joe "ammo hunter" Blow getting the inside track on pending legislation before the paid suits at the NRA.

Hey my buddy heard Saturday at a gun show that the government is going around painting all mailboxes either blue or red. Red for gun owners, to mark them for the coming confiscations.

over where I'm at, there's enough 40 sw to arm a small military. I can't find 45, 9mm, or 380 though. Looks like the scare is on pretty good here where I'm at.

The sky is falling the sky is falling.......

Please. Fear and paranoia spread much faster than legislation and policy ever will. I'm still waiting for the panic to die down, so I can pick up a semi-auto rifle on the cheap from those who overpayed during all this. :)

Huh. Thought occured to me my Marine Mag 870 is salt water resistant. Yay for global warming!!!!

'sarcasm

Also wonder how much I can inflate a .40 to fit the bore?

Let's see, these are rough figures only and I can't remember how many concerned gun owners there would be in the US, let's say 10,000,000. The new tax would be, say, $5 on a box of 100 rounds. We don't buy the 100 rounds and we save the tax, we all send the money to a really good law firm. That should be about $30 each times 10,000,000.

$300,000,000 should pay for a pretty good trip to the SCOTUS. We have far more power than we think, it's called money and we should spend it defending our rights because that is the cheaper course in the long term.

went to walmart last night and heard the guy behind the counter telling a woman buying binoculars that the reason they have a sign limiting everyone to only 2 boxes of ammo was because there is a bill about to be passed that will raise taxes 500% on ammo and everyone is buying up ammo before it happens. whew what a run on :)

The rumor is everywhere.

A lot of half truths, and I will not swear I am correct. The way I understand it there has been a push from some members of congress to pass a 500% increase in the tax on ammo. Even if passed (which is highly doubtful) it would not mean an increase of 500% on ammo, just the tax on ammo. For example if the tax is currently 7% you would pay $.70 tax on a $10 box of ammo for a total of $10.70 A 500% increase on the tax would mean the tax would go up to 35%. The same $10 box of ammo would now cost $13.50.

This push for the ammo tax has been around for years. The extra money was supposed to go to pay for hospital bills from people shot by guns.

That's exactly my point. Everyone is paying heed to these rumors without checking any reliable sources, thus feeding the monster. They are all just listening to their buddies who heard it from a friend who heard it in the gun shop or Wally World.

I guess the tax on a double cheeseburger should be raised to pay for the hospital bills of those that have heart attacks.

That's It I'm Painting My mail Box Yellow with the Words "Don't Tread on Me" on Both Sides.

I'm getting rid of my mailbox.

Dang! I wish there was plenty of .40 S&W around here. Went to the local Wally World the other night & about the only handgun ammo I saw was .357 sig. Last trip I made there before that the only .40 they had was Winchester White Box. I really don't like Winchester White Box but as it was all they had I bought it.
