Hey guys....I have an old Santa Barbara NMA, .44...that I picked up about 4 years ago or so at a pawn shop for 20 bucks.

It has a few issues, and as of now is nothing but a project gun.

My question is, I need to replace the spring on the pawl (or hand if you will), because it is alltogether missing. I check on dixie's site, and am thinking of maybe getting a Uberti hammer to swap it out.

I may even get a new cylinder, the original one is awfully pitted inside the chambers, and three of the nipples are froze solid, and yes, I've tried every trick there is to removing froze nipples...but these arent going anywhere.

Does anyone have a SB remington and a uberti...or even a Pietta,,, that they know they can swap cylinders, and the complete hand assembly with?

I had a new Remmie, target sights, a few years ago but traded it, and never got around to seeing if the parts would interchange. Any help on this would be appreciated...I wanna get this shooter shootin!! Thanks

why not just replace the spring? Lots of post on THR BP about using say a section of bobby pin or what have you to do that with. Or even mounting a spiral spring and plunger in the frame to bear on the hand in place of the original spring.

Before I started buying or obtaining new parts I would do a lot of tinkering to see what would work with a little work.

I am curious to see what you got for $20, how about a picture?

Not to good at this.....But this is it. I'm thinkin I can probablly salvage the cylinder, make it shootable....The hand spring I'm not to sure about.

As far as the coil spring and plunger.... the curve on the frame is gonna make it pretty difficult to get a good straight drill line goin.

I'll study it some more over a cup of hot coffee tommorow morning, But I may just see if I can get a replacement hammer/hand assembly from one of the Itallian clones, and the only thing I havnt tried with the froze nipples is boiling the cylinder for a few minutes...see if that breaks em free.

If you can't remove the frozen nipples, why not drill them out with a bit smaller than the nipples and then peel out the metal left in the threads. or re-tap with a coarser thread if that is possible depending on what size nipples it has now. (I'm not expressing this well but maybe you can get the drift.)

I'm about an hour away from you J.....And just because I bought it from a sucker...doesn't mean I'm one...lol. I bought it as a project gun, but things just kept gettin in the way of progress on it, but I'm definatlly gonna get started on it!

I installed a Ruger coil and plunger in some Remingtons. I made a new hand with a flat back to ride the plunger and keep the plunger from protruding too far into the slot. The retaining screw is located on the outside as it is on the Ruger Bearcat.

That's pretty slick RC...But I'm thinking I wanna leave it in it's original state, with the original handspring as is. I'm ordering a new hand from Dixie tommorow, so maybe with just some minor adjustment...it'll be good as new.

redneck handspring replacement

Drill a hole through the hand after removing the old broken spring. Fashion a new spring out of straight spring wire, about .024" works well, and fish it through the hole. File a groove in the bottom of the hand and bend the other end of the wire to bite into the groove. Play with the upper bend to keep the hand protruding, but not so much as to interfere with fall of the hammer.

You can get straight spring wire from Wollf Springs.

They never break.

These are hands out of a Colt open top. You could probably adapt the idea to yours.

ummmm...Jbar...no offense, but I think not...pretty good ingenious idea, but I'm kinda particular on my shooters...I'll replace it the right way. Thanks for the idea though, might come in handy in some way down the road.

Noz......not a chance!!

Olnamvet.......Ya can't blame em...it was a sweet deal!!

Save my photos.

After you break a few more hand springs, you might reconsider.

As strange is this may sound...I've never had a hand spring break on me, and I have been shootin these for a while. That spring was broke when I got it.

I will save the photos though, cause I may have just jinxed myself and find myself needin a quick fix, thanks J.
