Looking at them real hard, just cant find a lot of input about them on THR or anywhere else. Are they not catching on?

I have two. Most ergonomic guns around I think.

Many law enforcement agencies are going to them over Glock.

I would say they haven't really obtained the fan (maybe I sould say fanboy) base that Glock, XD, and some others have. They are still rather new in the polymer frame market. Lot's of people seem to have a beef with S&W over locks and things.

I think they are here to stay and very good firearms. I have a full-sized .45 and 9mm compact.

It may not be taking the market by storm or anything, but there are plenty of good things being said about them, including by myself. I shot a 9mm full size as a rental and was very impressed with it, so much so that I went out and bought a 9mm compact for carry. It had 100% perfect functioning from round one, with superior hand fit/feel and trigger action to the Glock - in fact, I've characterized it as a "better-feeling Glock." Unfortunately it was a casualty of the economy. :cuss: My sole criticism of the compact is its slide thickness, which made it less comfortable to carry IWB than a slimmer gun. What I really wish for is a size that splits the difference between a full size and compact - in other words, a better-feeling Glock 19.

A very plausible assessment.

You can't find any commentary on THR? Then you're not looking hard enough. They are regarded by many, myself included, to be right up there with Glock, and XD as the best available for the money.

I have an M&P9 that I adore. My feeling (and one i know is shared by many) is that these guns tend to dampen recoil A LOT. My 9mm recoils much less than other 9's. the 40 feels more like a 9mm etc...

Here is Distra's write up of an M&P9c that I just sold him.

My feelings about the M&P series is this:
Accurate, reliable, low recoil, fits almost any hand very well because of the S,M,L backstraps, good fit/finish.

The M&P is becoming the one to beat in many circles.

FINALLY, Glock has a serious competitor for the police market.

I have had just about every pistol in the class of the S&W M&P .....glock,SA XD, and so on. The M&P seems to fit my hand and points well for me. I have nothing but good to say about all of them its just that the M&P fits me better than the rest, so no matter which you choose as far as function you won't go wrong its just finding the pistol that feels good to you

Your joking right? No info.

The anti Glockers are cheering and promoting the M&P all the time on THR.
To them its the "great white hope" to take the Austrian Arrogence down a notch or three.

Finally an American gunmaker got a polymer gun right. The end of wood and steel is in sight.

600 police forces...only about 10,000 more (and maybe a military or two) to catch up to Glock. :uhoh: ;)

being a bit overdramatic, aren't we?

i don't see any "anti-glockers" looking for the "great white hope" lmao.

i own both glock and m&p's. as i stated previously, for 40cal & 45acp i prefer m&p, (better ergonomics, reliability, and accuracy).

however for 9mm i like glock. nothing handles +P+ like a glock 9mm. :)

600 depts isn't bad considering the m&p's only been on the scene for 3 or 4 years, and glock's been out for almost 30.

If you're talking about a lack of threads concerning malfunctions, warranty service, recalls and kabooms - then it's a good thing.

19-3Ben, you beat to t it! ;) I shot this pistol in our tactical match yesterday, up against an M&P9 pro and did very well. I'd put this pistol up against any compact on the market. I have the 45c as well and it's a great pistol. The M&P platform is very solid. IMHO, the Glocks have a better finish, but the M&P is equal or better in all other categories. The two issues I've had are light strikes with an early M&P40 that was an easy fix with new striker from S&W, and my 45c was missing a pin that holds the take down lever in the sear block. Not sure how it left the factory that way, of course S&W made it right in about 5 days. These are the only issues I've had.

I own a full size M&P 9mm and absolutely love it. It's more accurate than I am, has great ergonomics, and has been 100% reliable for the 800 or so rounds I've put through it so far.

Just bought one!

I've owned Glocks since I started shooting and was about to purchase another when, for the first time, I put an M&P9C in my hand. I immediately bought it.

VERY comfortable in my hand, light, small, easy to take down and a great trigger pull.

Thus far I'm very happy with my purchase.

2 of my buddies have them, in fact, one buddy bought his last week and we shot it for the 1st time yesterday.

Massachusetts has a 10l b. trigger mandatory on it and all I can say is the gun is junk with a 10 lb. trigger.

I think the M&P std. trigger is 6.5 lbs. which would be a totally different gun than we get in Mass. and I have never fired that one.

The M&P I fired yesterday shot 200 rounds without issues other than the awful accuracy due to the heavy trigger.

Sigbear

The officers in my Police Academy who had the most problems had M&Ps, including sending them back for new guns and extractors. Not a hater just stating the facts, after seeing how these guns performed during a 1800 round week, I would not carry one for duty or off duty.

I originally went into the academy thinking about buying one.

I have an M&P9FS that is my primary HD gun. Had the M&P Pistol Action work done at S&W and it is now a dream to shoot. Great trigger, extremely accurate. Fits my hand better than the Glock. I have nothing but praise for mine.

I rented an M&P in .40 the other day and loved it. You can get models with an improved trigger, thumb safety, and without a magazine safety. The range gun I shot had some issues (the magazine kept popping out after a few rounds no matter how well I seated it), but many range guns are improperly maintained.

If I were to buy a polymer .40 pistol, it would be the M&P all day. But for 9mm, I still like Glock better, mainly because Glock is slimmer and has far better aftermarket support.

I am making the transition from 1911s to something lighter to accomodate an aging back.

Glocks are mighty fine and accurate and reliable enough for me, but they just don't feel right in .45.

I have an M&P 45C that is growing on me quickly. It is light, more than accurate enough and 100 per cent reliable. Plus I can shoot lead reloads in the factory barrel.

You can't go wrong with a Glock but the M&P is gaining ground.

But, its a very personal thing, you need to shoot each one a lot before making up your mind.

It may not be taking the market by storm or anything

I beg to differ sir... The M&P semi-automatic pistol line has been the most successful in Smith & Wesson's history. I'm not sure how you measure success, but when a company as large and old as S&W has it's biggest product launch in history, that is saying something.

When was this? (The academy having issues?)

The M&P just doesnt sound as sexy as Glock or XD...that's why the others get more airplay, IMO.

As a new shooter, I tried every 9mm the range had to rent. I tried every Glock in 9mm and the XDs esp. The minute I picked up the M&P (fullsize) it fit my hand the best (medium grip....it comes with 3 sizes of palm swell).

I liked the trigger better and it pointed great for me. The only thing that pointed better was a Kimber 1911.

It has been incredibly reliable right out of the box (didnt even clean it).

Try as many as you can and see what feels best for you.

I own an M&Pc, a Glock and an XD. To me the M&P has the worse trigger out of the 3 mainly due to it's vague reset. The M&P is the most natural to point with the Glock in second. I carry the M&Pc daily IWB it is more comfortable than carrying my Glock or XD IWB. I really think any one of the three are reliable firearms worthy of owning at least one of each manufacturer.

Well that's not very difficult to accomplish.

SW Semi Autos never caught on when they were being produced. Cops used them but the general public did not buy them in great numbers at the time.

The 3rd generations are more popular now than when they came out. Few all steel choices these days so they are having a resurgence in interest by many and the fact that many are being retired by LE.

Lots of people still comment that SW is a great revolver company but are not as enthused about their semi autos and never have been.

And then there is the Sigma. A gun that still fails to shake its past issues.

So it only took them years and after many others had already blazed the way to finally get it right. So kudos to finally getting it right.

The 4566, 4506, 1006, 1076, 1066 and 5906 that I have owned were excellent firearms.

Just thought I would pass along a few links regarding the only area that I think some people wish was better...the trigger. Apex Tactical has just come out with a modified sear that really improves the trigger. Friends says it rocks... I'm on the waiting list for mine. Currently they are out of stock but take a look if you are interested. The Apex sear is an already modified piece that Burwell discribes in his link.

Also, here is a link from Dan Burwell, one of the top M&P smiths. It shows the sear modification and other things that can be done to the trigger.
