I swap carry guns as the seasons change. I've never had a problem with either a Glock or a 1911. Unless their is a mechanical flaw in the gun itself the operator is the one that determines rather the gun is safe or not. Each one has different safety systems but any individual can override any safety system. Simply put don't touch the trigger until you are reay to firs. And never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy.
My gunsmith has seen instances of very worn old 1911's with worn sears or amatuers attempting trigger jobs produce discharges in 1911's in which the trigger was not touched. But these are very specific circumstances. The only caveat I would add is that a Glock must have a holster that covers the trigger guard. Although true of any gun especially the Glock. If you're not comfortable with a particular operating system for peace of mond I would stick with one I was comfortale with. Rather the problem is real or imagined.

Pick up both.
Point in a safe direciton and pull both triggers.

I bet you the Glock will go bang everytime but the 1911 will not. Why you ask? Because you did not deactivate the safety on the 1911, that's why.

I love my Glock 30 and feel that it is truly a no nonsense pull the trigger and it goes bang every time firearm. The problem is that any person could pick it up and pull the trigger and it would go bang, whereas with a 1911 they would pull the trigger and it would not unless they deactivated the safety.

Therefore it is my opinion that the 1911 with it's manual safeties make it a safter firearm to carry.

simple math

Safetys:

1911:
thumb
grip

Glock:
little thingy in the trigger

I’m no mathematician, but I think that 2>1.

I voted 1911 for one reason. It requires more than pulling the trigger once it leaves the holster to get it to go off if it is carried as it should be which is C+L.

I carry both the glocks and the 1911 platforms exclusively [ used to carry little j frames in the heat, but they are replaced with the small glocks now ], sometimes swapping them out daily for weeks.

Neither is unsafe in my hands, both can be unsafe in others hands.

It's the shooter whose safe or unsafe, not the guns.

I'm faster on the first shot with the glocks, and thats after carrying 1911's for over two decades.

Neither gun will ever fire unless you pull the trigger. Since I am not in the habit of pulling the triggers of pistols when i do not want them to discharge I can only conclude that neither gun presents a safety problem to the sensible shooter.

The only possible safety issue here is that With the safety engaged the 1911 will not fire even if you DO pull the trigger. That means that it is possible that it will not discharge when i want it to. That is the only possible safety issue with either weapon, and I dont think it is a big one since a person who carries a 1911 almost certainly practices disengaging the safety as part of their draw.

Safety

I think the only safety anyone should need is in the brain thats connected to their trigger finger.
Using your brain will prevent alot of accidents.
I think people should carry what ever they are more comfortable and confident with.
I agree with wally.

Maybe it's just me, but somehow I don't see the question as "How safe are you with a particular gun?"...

Also, I can't help but notice the "Glocks are as safe as anything else, but you really need a holster that covers the trigger" comments...

It just seems to me that that's a statement on the inherent safety (or lack thereof ) of a Glock, since I've not seen the same recommendation for other types of handgun.

Lordy, I know that questions has illicited a ton of responses, many different ones with the right answer for the responder,,,

For Me:

My personal preference is the 1911 with manual safety....the reason for ME...

I can pull the trigger until the cows come home and it will not go bang with the safety on...I have developed the habit of checking the safety every time I put it in my hand..
If some one takes my 1911 away from me and attempts to do me in with my gun, the manual safety may give me enough time to go for my backup and bring resolution to the problem in my favor while they are trying to figure out what thingy makes the gun go bangy..

A gun with no safety goes bang with lead in the launch tube when the trigger is pulled. the only other option is not to carry one in the launcher and rack the slide when needed... That is a satisfactory option for many and I have no problem with that at all.... That is why we have 1911's for people like me and the other forementioned type...I had to work on this prefernce and make up my mind for myself, and 1911 with manual safety is what I prefer for most safe and quickest in action....FOR ME, everyone else mileage may vary....By the way MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF OUR MEMBERS WHO CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST....PEACE BE WITH YOU....
