mshootnit, I cut the tang and installed the stock. Looks very nice. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

1stmarine, I like to top stock, what is it?

I really liked the oil finish color of this and the unique comb adjusting feature...

I wish I could find a tigr in .308Win from izmash but I don't think there is even one around.
Just like this one...

Otherwise the saiganov should be a very nice project. Much better than any Romanian or Chinese leftover from
some junk yard that nobody wanted and poorly put together here.

I would make one exception thought, if I wanted to go for the long barrel saiga I would do something to tune the
harmonics on that system. There is a difference vs. the carbine so most likely I would special order a handguard
that would double as harmonics dampening + cooling and wrapped in a nice wood stock so nobody would notice.

I might look into it this winter if I finish another two long range AR projects first.

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing about the barrels. I'd almost be tempted to order a match grade barrel for it just to see how accurate it could be had, something similar to the "1000 yard ak" from Sons of Guns. But that project will have to wait until I move down to Oregon.

I think I would have to do some sanding on the pistol grip to take away some of the blockyness. Otherwise looks like a great project.

yes, if only someone made a wooden PSL/Dragunov type stock for drop in installation after conversion. Cant believe some of these stock makers havent started doing this tbh

Here is a picture of my old "Saigunov."

It was nice and all, but that was back when no high-capacity mags were available for them, and it was maybe a 3 MOA shooter... nothing to write home about. I sold it to finance a .308 AR purchase.

I might try another one of these, except I would like to do the conversion, if only to put the PSL version of that stock on it (I really liked the adjustable cheek piece to facilitate quickly switching to irons). I might also cut the barrel back to 18" or so, move the front sight back, and thread the muzzle... I hear cutting them to that length does wonders for accuracy.

I want to try the dampening device before cutting but yes! that is a good idea. Anyhow the 16" is a tack driver as many know by know so if I started with the 21" I would take one inch at the time and see what happens with the most popular loads.
I think that a simple T6 sleeve might do very well and then resolve some of the harmonics issues very cleanly w/o much fuzz. I also do not believe any original sight posts or even heavy muzzle brakes should be used, that would only amplify any harmonics related issues.
A proper conversion with a nice trigger also is a huge contribution to accuracy potential.

A few quetions for the avid converters out there..

A - Anyone knows if the TC conterder stock is made in the USA?
B - Who has a sight post but in aluminum that is lighter and can be mounted closer to the gas block? I don't think that with a nice scope the prupose here would be to ever use the iron sights anyway.
C - If anyone knows about barrel sleeves for the AK, whether they integrated with wood or not please point us to this.

For an efficient and light muzzle brake I have several recommendations. This with and w/o threading the barrel. Nobody will ever know the difference.

Cheers.

I am selling the .308 saiga in this post (1st page) to invest in another very special Saiga conversion in 308 too.
This one is a tack driver. Anyone interested let me know.
Thanks.

better late than not at all....

308 (scoped) and 223, I need about 4 more :)

Thanks for your Help!

After a long wait finally got the stock on the way so I can start the "Saiganov" project as Cryogaijin described it. I am thinking something 'Saiganov light'.
This is the stock I chose from Rhineland Arms, Inc. ak-panther-stock.jpg
We will have to choose a custom handguard and some other distinctive features.

This is their website...

They are very proactive folks as I didn't get updated for a long while due to some issue with paypal address data they contacted me via the PM in
another forum here in NY. Seem very nice folks in deed.

Having owned my 308 since 2003, I finally got around to covering it last October. Finally got around shooting it last weekend (only 8 months later) . I put a Ace stock on it. I also bought an Israeli scope mount and didn't bother checking to see if it fit until I decided to go out and shoot the rifle. The scope mount does not center the rail over the receiver, yeah kind of disappointed, i.e., waste of money.

The rifle does shoot well, trigger is considerably better than stock and I like the stock. . Back to the drawing board for better sights. Leaning toward AK Tech-Sights instead of a scope.

Hi,
did you get the Israeli weapons one that you can adjust in height as well as centered? Those are OEM really but with the adjustment come pretty handy.
Thanks.

Yes I bought that IW mount. It will not center over the receiver. It is about 1/2" left of center and will not go any further. That is too far to compensate with scope adjustments. I'll post a photo if you would like.

Been doing a lot of shooting with military peeps of late. Kind of leaning toward Tech Sights for the 308 anyway.

On the other hand, I know know what you have been talking about. The Saiga 308 is a real sleeper in terms of a potential battle rifle. I was shooting it side by side with my M1a and it is lighter, shorter and has less felt recoil. Out to 25 meters it is just as accurate with stock sights. I was easily banging steel with it out to 150 meters standing.

Very nice Rifles there!
Maybe the slots are a tad shorter. If that is the case then can be cut a tad longer then you can get more adjustment. It should never be 1/2" more like 1/8" what is needed otherwise maybe there is something very wrong with the mount to start with and you could contact the seller and exchange it or something.
Take a look.
I hope this helps.

I was digging around in my junk box and found a Millet AK scope mount that replaces the rear sight blade. It has a Weaver rail and of course I would have to use some sort of pistol or scout scope with it. Any opinions on that type of set up. I am not a fan of scout scopes setups, which is why that mount is in my junk box. I don't remember which/if any of my AKs I might have used it on.

I am doing a known distance Appleseed shoot this weekend at an army base and another in September. I would like to have the Saiga set up by September to see if I can beat one of the other instructors who has a M1a Socom. I can take him with my full size M1a but kind of want to use the Saiga as a sleeper.

I don't like forward mounts. Never use them.
Did you give up on the IA adjustable mount?. It should not be too far off and by cutting the slots a bit more you might have that perfectly centered.
The grooves carved in the two parts will assure you are perfectly aligned and you could open the slots but I would assure at least one groove is catching the rail piece. After that red locktite some decent torque and you are done.
I don't think you need to be perfectly centered. A soon as it is not canted and the rail is aligned a minute offset is ok. 1/16 or even 1/8 is not relevant in the paper therefore is not relevant at the mount. The key is that the rail is parallel, aligned and free of cant.
I hope this helps.

Didn't give up on IW. I did look at it and it looks like it would be east to extend the slots a bit to get it into alignment. That's probably be what I use. Rings and an optic come next.

IMO light and small footprint. Look at the timberlines. I have several of those in the carbines. Mount use a simple and light one with rings integrated. I think it is the easiest way. Just my 2 cents..

I forgot.. I think the best thing is to find out the proper adjustment for the height and comb by closing your eyes, welding the system where you feel comfortable and then when you open your eye is where the picture of the scope should be. So you need to measure and might need a cheek raiser before you buy mount and rings. Sometimes I try try with used ones to get to the bulk park and then I fine adjust with the adjustable comb/raiser, scope mount and depth. Then at teh same time get the scope leveled using the paralax/stadia and a grid that I have at the end of the basement wall where my workbench is so I get the scope perfectly vertical. you can also do in the field with a level or a plum and a measuring tape. Will also need the lasser sighting so you can quickly get both the alignment and the zero at the same time and then locktite and do final torquing in the field.
I hope this helps.

since it all started here this my now completed 308. it had been a work in progress since November. So after 10 months and a couple of more sagias later I finally finished the 308. pretty much another Tapco rifle with SGM Muzzle Brake, Burris 3x9 scope as recommend by OP. Lastly, today I replaced single hook with double hook system just because I'd wanted to do so. Thanks to OP for his help.
