1stmarine that is a very nice saiga 12 you have built there, and .308 also is nice.

I got a question, where did you get the cheek riser for the tapco T6 stock? I need something like that for use on my AK with T6 stock for the scope mount I have.

I got many of them at a discount bin a in the local shop but you can find them online. Try Ebay or Amazon "T6 cheek rest" and let me know if you do not find them there.
They are goo quality but I have to warn you they are made in china by UTG. I don't like to buy anything made in china but I had no choice as I could not find anything else similar for the T6.

I found this http://www.combathunting.com/AR_15_M_16_M4-Collapsible_AR_15_M4_T6_Carbine_Stock_Cheek_Rest.html

Looks just like yours and for $8.50 i'm gonna order a couple.

I kept trying to look for tapco cheek rest and was getting the ones that screw on the FAL stock they make. Thanks for the help, and I don't mind if its UTG, my cheapo UTG rails are working just fine so I feel it'll probably be ok too.

Keep up the good work, I wanna build a saiga when I get the money together but i'm torn between 12 gauge or .308.

Thanks. Saigas are fun that is for sure. It is a hard decision between what first, the 12 or the .308? Unless you have an immediate need look for the one that is giving you a better deal or just flip a coin. Cannot go wrong either way.
I just got the UTG rails (made in the USA) for the 12 and they look good.
Like any aluminum stuff I will beat them up real quickly in the first drills I use them but they should hold up. We'll see, it is the first time I put those in the Saigas.
Regarding those raisers they are very sturdy so no problems with them and I like the fact that you can turn them sideways to lower or raise at will.
Good price you got there. I forgot but I think is about what I paid at the discount bin here in the local shop. I bought 15 of them. and put them in some of the carbines both ARs and AKs. I have tapco T6. Nothing fancy but always reliable like an old friend.
Cheers.

I just mailed my money order for one I found on gunbroker. I got it for $485 before the shipping and transfer fees. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I will be ordering the conversion kit soon.

Good Price on a Saiga

It was a good price I thought. It would be better to find one in a shop close enough to avoid the shipping costs and transfer fee, but I can't complain. This will be my first internet gun purchase, but if it goes well it won't be my last. I found at least four 308 saigas within $5 of that same price in case anyone is interested. However, most were well above that price and most were already converted to some extent. I am in the middle of a move, but I can't wait to fire mine and add some upgrades. I will let you know how it turns out.

I am also trying this auto gas plug for the first time. Model: TAC-47 autoplug.
This ones come with a self regulating bleeding port that is nothing but an inner small plug that is spring loaded using a spring that can be loosen or tighten to the optimal setting. If you make it tight it will bleed less excess gas, if you loose it will reduce the pressure in the piston tube. The idea is that the spring will self adjust the ideal pressure so more pressure will open more by itself...

http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/saiga-12-aka-auto-gas-plug-black-p-1531.html

I got it at mississippiautoarms but I am not so impressed with it. It seems that the adjustment is not hard enough to handle AA target loads. It is advertised as you should set it up and it should handle anything but I can tell is not well tested. I will play a bit more with it but at this point I am not betting a dime on it.

I will try it tomorrow so we will see...

Well I went in my little local gun store to see if they had the cheek riser before I ordered and my impulse purchase behavior got the best of me so I picked up a Mako GL Shock CP buttstock. I must say it fit pretty damn good on the tapco T6 tube. NO wiggle at all.

Adjustable cheek riser shock absorbing spring and a pad on the butt. A little pricey at 85 bucks but it appears to be quiet high quality.

Now I should start looking for me a .308 Saiga to convert, I decided to go for that first instead of 12 gauge. Who has the best deals on stock ones?

jojo200517,
Lots of folks like those a lot. I have not tried them so keep us posted when you get it done and get a chance to try it.

On another note, today I tried the AK-47 home made bullet guide I posted before and that I installed and had 0 issues over 200 rounds.
Cheers,

There is a lot of confusion whether to an original Saiga .308 is NJ legal or not. Any laws we looked at we could not come with a single reason why not. We couldn't find any argument as to why this would not be legal so it is left to the arbitrary interpretation of the individual doing the transfer and/or FFL dealer. Even lawyers, Police, Dealers some say yes, some say no. I feel sorry for the folks in NJ. So much confusion going around.

I think that is the objective of the anti-gun legislators is to make things so confusing that it is impossible to decode the truth. Laws that result in arbitrary interpretation should be consider invalid.

If anyone knows anything we don't know, we are happy to learn more from anyone enthusiast of these nice little Russian carbines.

Cheers.

I heard there are some restrictions coming to the Saiga shotgun department. Is that a rumor or something actually going on there? Anyone knows?
Thanks.

There is "talk" of changes to shotgun importation rules. You can read all about it at the link.

http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=6172

Also, because of this topic I picked up a Saiga 308 myself. Right out of the box with no modification I was able to shoot a 3" group at 50 yards from a rest. That's with my old eyes and only one brand of ammunition and a long and gritty trigger pull. I expect improvement as I make the conversion and try different ammunition. In short, I couldn't be happier with this rifle, so a big thanks to you 1stmarine!

Thanks

Hey guys. Thanks for this thread. I have been lurking and have now joined. I found a classified in my area and bought a saiga 12, and a saiga 308 for $1200 combined. I am excited and very nervous on converting. I am thinking about starting with the 308.

Sharpe,
You are very welcome.
1,200 is still a good price these days and It looks like a good choice of calibers, pretty much a do it all type of combo.
Conversions are very similar. I would say the .308 is about the same if you do not put a muzzle brake. If you do, as with every addition, plan for the work ahead carefully. I am telling you from my own experience with threading the barrel and the custom brake.
Also, make sure you check local and state laws and get all the compliance parts w/o any exceptions so when you start converting one you go all the way and your firearm is legal both at the federal and state level.
I would not recommend a conversion otherwise.
Cheers,
E.

walt501,
Many thanks for sharing the link from the NRA about the potential importation ban. I guess we will first need to see how someone can explain what "sporting purposes" really means, in a context that not just anyone but also us, firearms enthusiasts, can understand . We cannot go by a game of words or the purpose of use from certain individuals or groups. A shotgun is a shotgun and whether it is an old Baker or the latest creation from Keltec they all shoot shells.

Can the sporting capabilities be solely attributed to these shotguns in question or the actual intention of use? For what I know saigas are used for a wide variety of purposes like many other auto loading and pump shotguns.

Beyond the god given right that allow me to be able to defend myself against predators, and thugs, and also granted by our constitution, I consider like many, defensive pistol shooting a sport. This is a sport that can also save my life or the life of others. How is this different from Karate, Judo or other sports?

If the issue is around whether some shooting disciplines should be consider official sports and ethically acceptable sports or not, why we allow extreme cage fighting and think that it is one bit more appropriate than a fellow firearm enthusiast shooting a saiga at a steel target?

I think that the key here is plain control. The quest to further chip away people's freedom one bit at the time.

Oppose to any more bans. If this is proposed I will call all my local representatives as I always do. Be always polite but firm and ACT!. Do not sit on it. I would oppose this even if I didn't like the Saigas. All defenders of freedom should do the same. I see no evil in the Saigas, actually in any firearm for that matter.

Cheers,
E.

Same thing here.
If anyone needs help with a conversion just send me a PM, email or simply post it here so others can learn too.
Specially how to accurize the carbine. There are a couple of tricks but ultimately you have to train and do your part when shooting.
Cheers.

Cryogaijin,
A question for you that live in big bear country. I am planning a bear hunt this year and I want to bring two systems. My primary will be a .338 lapua and I am undecided between bringing the Saiga in the molle or a marlin 45/70. Depending on the field conditions we might do closer range so what is your opinion about the saiga for bear at 50 to 200 yards?
I wouldn't be bringing any autoloader if it wasn't because I am not alone so I can rely on the tracker but anyway I am most confident about the saiga. So far in 2.5 years 0 FTF and 0 FTEs with the .308. I am a good shooter but never used an autoloader for bear so I want to know what you think about this.
I am going to test a few custom loads with the TSX bullets.
thoughts?

Thanks
E.

They will come down over time. They have to. It always happens.
I have a bigger issue with my FNAR. $78 each mag!!. I have four mags but I cannot afford more at this price. I think FN sales and pricing lost their minds.
They could sell more systems if the mags were more reasonable. That is nuts!

converting one here in a week or so
This one will have
Ace Sidefolder and internal adapter
Arsenal 2 stage trigger US FCG
Ram trigger guard
pin retainer plate
SAW pistol grip
no BHO

Hey guys. I have a questions for you. I was offered by a local ffl "saiga" expert to do the following on my saiga 12:

"200.00 bucks I will throw a Tapco trigger group, Buttstock, Pistol Grip, move the trigger group, and spot finish it for you"

This includes the parts. What are your thoughts and input?
