I am wanting to get a file that will "reach out and touch something" if need be. If have decided on a 300 WSM. My problem is which manufacturer to use.

The Sako would be the A7 roughtech pro in green with the black barrell.

The Savage would be the 11/111 long range hunter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS- does anybody know a Sako dealer?

No question, get the Sako. Try EuroOptic on line for a good price on the Sako.:eek:

Is there a question here?

One of the historically highest quality European makers versus a rifle built by a company known for its "good bang for buck" econo-rifles?

I'm sure the cheapskates will be along soon to tell him the Savage is all he needs.

Keep in mind that Sako had to shoot a 5 shot sub-MOA group before they let it out of the factory.

I like Sakos a lot myself. Who doesn't? But it is worth checking out the Tikkas as well since they roll off the same assembly line.

One negative on the Savage, is that they are all 2+1 mag capacity in the WSM's. The slightly fatter cases will allow 3 rounds in the magazine, but you cannot close the bolt with 3 in there. The top round will feed into the chamber. You can get 3+1 in all other magnum calibers or 4+1 in most non-magnums. All other rifles chambered in the WSM's have enough room in the magazine to load 3+1.

Might not be a deal killer, but info a potential buyer should know.

I'm not crazy about Savage anyway. In my experience they are over rated and over priced for what you get.

Sako is a good rifle, but I'd buy one of the Winchester Ultimate Shadows and use the money saved for a custom stock. The street price should be $600-$650. That leaves a lot of money for better optics and a true quality stock.

If you don't want to go custom, then buy the EW. Street price under $1000

Sako 100%, you might give Tikka T3 a look. Same gun as the Sako only cheaper. I had a T3 in a 300wsm, the only reason I traded it off was all our shots were too close for the caliber. Replaced it with a T3 in a 243.

Another vote for Sako and EuroOptic. Great guns and great people over there. I have bought a number of Tikka's from them. And like others mentioned, if the Sako is too pricey, the Tikka is a very close functional facsimile with some of the elegance removed.

Your two choices are on opposite sides of the cost spectrum. I admit I am a huge Savage fan...and not because I cannot afford anything better.

Of your two choices, the Sako wins since you would not need to do anything to it but to add optics.

Sako/Tikka has the best factory action available. I agree with those that have stated that Tikka is a lot of rifle for the money. I wouldn't say it's the same rifle, but there are a lot of pros of going with a Tikka.

I look at Savage this way...if you are on a budget and you want to upgrade in the future and you like to upgrade it yourself...Savage and don't look back. That being said, the Savage action is terrible compared to Sako/Tikka.

FinnComm;

Would you care to explain that comment please? I've been told, that the Tikka is made in the same factory as the Sako, and on the same machines. I'm sure there are detail differences, such as the plastic parts & far less hand finishing, but it was implied to me that the basic gun was the same. Although I admit to being curious as to whether or not the Sako uses the same floating recoil lug that the Tikka does.

Tikka is nowhere near a true SAKO.

If you have the $$ for the SAKO get it without question and don't look back.

HKGuns;

That's quite a statement. Care to provide any back-up for it?

You will not be upset with the quality, fit and finish of the SAKO 85. They make one fine firearm.

Good luck and shoot straight

My two most accurate guns.... Sako single shot heavy barrel in .22 PPC. Shiny blue and walnut. And a Tikka Tactical in .223. The Tikka is very "matte" and utilitarian in finish. The plastic stock is so-so. Not bad but not great. The .22 PPC Sako shoots such tight groups that I actually quit shooting it years ago. If you wanted an example of a rifle that shoots "better than you can shoot," that would be the perfect example. But the Tikka will very easily shoot under half inch groups all day. I'm older and my eyes aren't what they used to be... I'm not sure it is humanly possible for me to shoot a quarter inch or smaller group like the Sako was doing 20 years ago... but the Tikka certainly shoots very, very well.

Mechanically both are fine rifles. Elegance and beauty to the Sako. On the other hand, the Tikka is an excellent rifle and I carry it around in the woods without worrying about banging it on a tree or fence post.

Maybe I should have said almost as good, but IMHO. I like the action of the T3 better.
