'Evening gents,

I've got some training to do next week in San Antonio parts, and I'm looking for a good range that has a nice selection of handguns to rent. I've tried nearly everything at my local Omaha range, and I'd love to try out some HKs, Walthers, Glocks, Springers, Rugers, etc that I don't have here at home.

Any Lone Star shooters from San Antonio town who have good experiences and positive things to say about local ranges?

I would be most appreciate of any responses, and thank you kindly in advance...

If you'd like to try skeet and trap, the National Skeet Shooting Association is located on the northwest side of town, near Seaworld. They will loan you a shotgun and let you buy shells on-site. Sheet or trap was $4.00 a round last year. There were only open on Thursday nights to the public last year. Call them first.

Looks good, Cato

First, one of my favorite Romans - the Censor, the Elder, but also the Revolutionary American "Cato's Letters" - recently republished by Liberty Fund (that was random...!)

The Bullethole range, even though it doesn't have all that many guns for rent, just happens to have 3 that I really want to shoot - Glock 30, 36, and Kimber Ultra Carry. Well, that's at least $30!

Anywhere else out there?

Hey Alpine...San Antonio native here....theres plenty of good ranges, but most of the ones I frequent do not rent guns.

Bullet Hole does, and its a neat place. Cedar Ridge and Bracken are nice ranges, but have no gun rentals. Enjoy SA and be sure to eat at Las Palapas.

Good call TxCajun

I just dropped him an email asking about gun rentals. It looks like a good place to shoot as well. They carry a lot of good manufacturers as well.

Best,

Bill - is that on the River Walk?

Beautiful city, lovely people mostly, though my neck of the woods - Lackland parts, is not as salubrious unfortunately...

Thanks for the tip

Postscript: I went to the Bullet Hole, just beyond San Antonio city limits, and it was a gentle surprise. Homely and unfancy - lots of earthen berms and elbow grease, but a colorful and quirky proprietor and a nice selection to rent. I "joined," and rented a Glock 30, XD-45 and Sig220. I befriended a doctor there with a brand new HK USP 45, and shot it like a dream! There was a drill instructor from Lackland there as well, with a new Beretta carbine (the one that took the handgun mags) and a Ruger 45 he just picked up from Academy Sports after "a long day at work." God, I love Texas!

Thanks for all the responses and help!

Remember the Alamo

"Dear Sir:"

How is that for being appropriate to San Antonio and Lackland in particular?

I just returned from Lackland yesterday where my youngest son graduated Airman basic.

The River Walk and the Alamo were indeed great, and I would like to visit them again. They were celebrating "Fiesta" at the time, so the city was bustling. And I drove around the 410 loop many times.

Sorry, but I was not able to do any target pracitice there, but may I recommend some revolver and lever action shooting to ingratiate yourself with some of the more traditional Texans; and you may enjoy that too.

Please post what you find here on THR .

Check out this site for the Bullet Hole. Tons 'O Fun! There's "Hill Country Shooting Sports" in Kerrville about an hour away. Nice drive out I-10 West and worth the trip. I'm heading there Friday. Go once a month. Very nice. Have everything.

Bracken Range is my favorite. Out Nacodoches Road..outside the Loop (410). A Place to Shoot is ok. It's what the name implies.

The Skeet And Trap is a big deal. Lots of international meets there. Located in the city. If you want more info, just ask and I'll be happy to post. Also, let us know what kind of food you like! Tex-Mex was born here and it's the best in the world. I can fill you in on some Grrrate spots.

Hit the River Walk for a fun time in a beautiful setting, and check out the reataurant at the top of the Tower Of The Americas.

Spurs are in the playoffs and you can get tics if you can afford the price.

It's all here and, as mentioned, be happy to answer any questions. Bring warm weather clothes!

Just checked with Herb..owns "Bullet Hole"..full auto paradise, my friend! Grease Gun 45 ACP, Sig Saur 552 w/.223 (SWAT), etc. Bring some $$'s..it can get pricey as you really get hooked after that 1st clip! At least I do! H&K MP5's in 9mm.

Good time to come, too. Warm..but not too hot!

I'm from San Antonio. Glad that Alpinewhitey got to The Bullet Hole - it is, IMHO, the best range in the area. Friendly, guns galore to rent (incl. several full autos - there's no surer way to guarantee a big smile on your face for the rest of the day), and a single fee to shoot all day long, no matter how many guns you bring, and you can pick up whatever brass you'd like to. Oh, did I mention friendly?

Contrast to Bracken (which I go to occasionally because it is closer and that's where a lot of my shooting buddies go for the same reason) - you pay per gun, they want you to leave your brass, and the atmosphere is distinctly unfriendly (to me, based on my experiences over the years - as in, they're doing us a favor by letting us shoot there).

Given the choice, there IS no choice.

Just checked with Herb..owns "Bullet Hole"

I know the owner of The Bullet Hole - WELL. Who the fheck is Herb? If you meant to say "Vern" then you're off by a bit more than a year, since he very regrettably passed away.

Revolutionary American "Cato's Letters"

If I remember right, Cato's Letters were British, and pre-dated the American Revolution by some decades. But they were very widely read by 18th-century Americans.

"Herb" shags the phone and can answer any questions you might have. "Vern" is listed on the web site as owner, but has apparently passed away.

If you've been, then you already know what a kick it is! Hope you enjoy your stay and get in some range time!
