Savage 10FP -- WOW!

to be honest, the stock i wish i could find again is one that was discontinued a few years back. basicly it was a semi-fancy walnut stock cut and finished to Vietnam era M40 external specs, but with a modern bedding block incorporated. but like i said the company that made it discontinued it's sale to the general public

What model would that be and who makes it? Also, is it available for a savage short action. I would be interested in finding one for my savage. I wanted to buy an exact replica of the M40a1 stock but the only company i could find that makes one is McMillan and of course I would have to sell my left #$* to afford one.

re: 55gr vs. 68 gr

The barrel is 1 in 9. Now that I have the handloads tailored to the rifle, it really doesn't matter between the Sierra Blitz King/Nosler Ballistic tip in 55gr and the 69gr SMK/68gr Hornady BT match. They'll all shoot tighter than I can hold, but with a slight difference in POI when I switch from one weight to another.

Current best group is .43" at 200 yards with the 55gr Sierra Blitz King and H335 powder. Handloading and more practice essentially allowed me to move the target back to 200 yards and repeat the initial 100 yard accuracy. I might be able to get even better groups if I played with the cartridge OAL, but I load everything to feed through an AR mag.

I'm quite happy with it they way it is....the weak link in the accuracy department now is ME, not the rifle.

re: the Nikon scopes ~ I got the standard reticles for both scopes. After checking the specs on the scopes I found that the area between the point where the crosshairs actually cross and the point where the lower vertical crosshair changed from wide to skinny is almost an exact match for the bullet drop at 300 yards when zeroed at 200.

re: the bolt knob ~ I've honestly never thought about it much, but I like the way it looks. I have some other priorities right now, but I'll check it out in the future.

You know to be quite honest, i can't remember the maker. it was a few years ago (back when the Rem. "Vietnam Era M40" came out), I've culled my favorites list since then, and frankly without that stock in their lineup i wasn't too interested in the rest of their line. :(

what I DO remember about them is that their entire product line was laminated and solid wood stocks with factory installed full-action-length bedding blocks, for "sporter/hunting" type rifles. the M40 stock was their only stock inlet for bull barrels.

I'm fairly certain they called the stock in question their "M-40 stock", at the time i last saw info on it it was not being offered in a savage inlet, nor frankly were any of their other designs, Rem, Winchester, and Howa were their big three.

I beleive i originally got the following pics off the page anouncing "due to yadda yadda we are no longer selling/making this product, please buy the complete rifle from Remington. but we're going to leave these here to tease you"

Eventually, once i have the tools and confidence, what I'll wind up doing with my 700 SPS, is buy a stock from Richard's microfit and replicate as close as possible the external look/dimensions, then pillar bed it.

My Savage 223 is also 1 in 9 twist, but I could not match the results of 55 to 68 or 69s. It might be the powder I was using (Varget) giving better results with heavier bullets.
