Savage 116 question/problem

So you got it in straight?

I did not think it was one of the crooked stocks, you can see them with no doubt...and you wern't saying that the insert looked like it was off to one side a bunch.

We have had nothing but good luck out of the new Savage 116/16...( and the rest) knock on wood, we are moving more Savages than any other brand with Tikka's a distant second.

As long as you follow the tightening procedure to the very word, those stocks do nicely!

Post a pix. or two of some groups for us.

I am building a Savage 116 for myself as we speak...waiting on parts now...waiting....waiting.....

Ya, straight as can be, I actually used my calipers and measured its about .008 closer on one side not even to enough to see. All I did was follow the procedure. The problem was that I couldn't find it in the manual for a bit. you would think the accustock section would be right under the regular stock section but its not its like 2 pages away. Even if the stock had come to me straight I would have had to learn this eventually anyways so I guess it was a good thing. It forced me to become very familiar with my rifle before shooting her.

Taking it out Saturday for break in and sighting @ 100 yards and Sunday for some 200 and 300 yd shooting. I have been looking for some Hornady SST ammo preferable the 139 gr stuff as I will mostly use it for deer but all I can find is the GMX in 139 gr so I might have to step up to the 154 gr SST. Any other good ammo under 35 bucks a box out there to take a look at?

And this from the company that in another thread was so bragged up. I get it. Savage has hired guns on here to brag up the products. Must be cheaper than quality control.
When something new comes out you have to give it a while for the bugs to be worked out. You can't expect it perfect. Even so I'd rather have it not look perfectly centered in the stock than have the bolt handle break off when I go to shoot it like the Remington 700's are known for. Or have it jam up when I want to shoot more than one shot like the 870 Expresses seem to do. Or have the thing be full of rust in a couple years. Also like the 870 Expresses are known for.

Overall, I'm not saying Savage is perfect or that their quality control is but their products seem to be a heck of a lot nicer than anything Remington has to offer and usually for cheaper. When comparing to Browning, Benelli, etc. I don't think they are on the same level. However, they are also a fraction of the cost.

I've never had a problem with Remington 700's but my son's 870 express did rust some when he left it in a case for a year or so. I shouldn't post when I'm pissed off but that would be less fun. Have a nice day.

Oh come on!! Remington's are hardly "known" for having the handle come off. The fact that it's possible for the handle to come off means that maybe 0.1% or less will experience that particular problem. I have three Remington 700s and have put thousands of rounds through them but never had a bolt come off. I did end up welding on all three bolt handles for insurance but if the bolt handle issue is as common as you imply it is, how come I've never experienced it, and no one I know (many people) who own and use Remingtons on a regular basis has ever experienced it? So, possible ... yes ... likely ... no.

I bought a Savage Weather Warrior a few months back and as much as I like it, the fit and finish isn't even close to any of the three Remingtons I own or the 50 or so I've handled and inspected in gun shops. That said, would I buy another Savage ... absolutely. Would I buy another Remington 700 .. absolutely.

:)

Savage 10, 110, 116 are such junk that I have 4 of them and Remington are so great i have 2 of them.

They are simple tools that have not seen a major change in almost 50 years.

Oh yes they are! I have personally seen it happen. Solder is NOT they best way to attach a bolt handle.

Range report

went to visit a buddy in dallas this weekend to shoot, he is a reloader so I decided to buy a set of dies and reload my own ammo. We used 61 gr IMR 4350, 139 gr SST, bullets and CCI magnum primers. we followed the OAL and case length info in the hornady book. here are the range results. I started with a break in period of shoot 1 shot clean, shoot 3 shots clean, shot 5 shots clean, and shot 5 shots and clean. The 100 yard 5 shot group is my last break in 5 shots. all shots were taken with the muzzle break closed. It was about 78 degrees and a tail/swirling wind with gusts well over 25 mph, still not bad.

5 shot group 100 yards

I came home and went to the local range today which has 200 and 300 yard areas. we had about a 15 mph cross wind and it was in the mid 60s all morning.

5 shot group 200 yards

Picture007.jpg

I was not even sure the bullets where hitting the target at 300 yards so I only shot 3 times. also, I used the first circle on the BDC reticule and the elevation is as close to perfect as you can ask with a 200 yard zero

3 shot group 300 yards.

over all I am pleased, these are all very dead deer. My next loads will be 154 gr SSTs, I think they will work better with the 1 twist per 9.5" of barrel.

any other recommendations?

Savage Manual settings for accutrigger/accustocks

this is to Savage25xtremes question #16 on the post that he asks for what the settings are for a accustock due to his manual is not the one that deals with the new accustock or trigger systems, if you want the formula for mounting the barrel and reciever to the accustock of a Savage with the accustock which is an aluminum bedded syn. stock with 3 screws. the #1 screw is the bolt wedge screw at the muzzle end of the gun, screw #2 is under the floorplate and #3 screw is just under the bolt release button next to the trigger guard underneath! It is very important to have a Wheeler torch fat wrench or one like it for gunsmithing. the torch lbs is 40 lbs inch pounds per screw. the formula is turn the barrel upside down on you lap, place the wedge bolt in front of the recoil ring with the angled ends long point down on the barrel so when you tighted the angle pushes the recoil ring tight against the back of the aluminum bedding, place the stock over this on your lap, line the #1 scew hole up with the wedge hole then put the screw in and tighten just till you feel resistance then back it off a half turn, then place #2 screw till it just stops, don't tighten hard, then put #3 screw in under the bolt release button and do the same as the other two just turn until it stops, then go to the #2 screw pull reciever to the rear of stock as much as you can then tighten screw to the 40 inch pounds, then go to the #3 screw and tighten to the 40 inch pounds and last go to the #1 wedge screw and tighten to the 40 inch pounds, this is the proper settings of the reciever to the accustock as in the manual. I hope this helps you Savage25xtreme.

Hey dude, what one piece scope ring base did you put on your Savage? I use Leupold and no matter what one piece base I order for my Savages long or short actions which I have both a 270 Win. long action and the 308 Win. in short action and both my Leupold one piece bases always leave the back hole untouched by the base mount and I see that your base covers that screw hole, please tell me what brand base you bought, thanks.

He's using a one-piece mounting system (base and lower rings all one piece) from DNZ Products.
