As I've mentioned before, I work in a hotel in Alaska. I am the only active shooter on the staff. So today my boss comes up to me "Say, CG, You're a killer, right? We've had this box of ammo for 6 months and need to get rid of it. Uhh. . . can you take it?" And hands me a 2/3rds full box of .38spl ammo. As I was planning on taking a .357 revolver to the range next time I go to the range, so Bonus!

OTOH, *** is up with the whole "killer" thing? *sigh*

You know, interesting timing, a buddy of mine gave me about a magazine's worth of Buffalo Bore .45 230gr JHP +P ammo today. Said that the Black Bears and Moose are coming out, and knew I didn't have anything hotter than a .45 in my carry rotation.

Went to the Sportsman's Warehouse next to the Sam's club and got a full box of the same ammo.

...They also had one of the Taurus Raging Judge Magnums at the counter. I was very tempted, but trying to save money this year. :D

Haven't gotten the chance to shoot any of these yet.

But I HAVE shot Black Hills 230gr +P back in El Paso, which I can't imagine being too different.

You can tell the difference the +P makes in recoil, that's for sure. It's not unpleasant, but it turns the usual .45 'push' into more of a snap like a .40. Never did any ballistic gel tests or anything like that.

I think y'all have missed the point the OP was trying to make.

And yes, that is an extremely disrespectful way to address someone. Next time you have a little lunch left over--"Hey boss, you're pretty fat, do you want the rest of my sandwich?"

i wouldnt read too much into it......my guess is he said it tongue-in-cheek

i dont think he meant any disrespect.....and my guess is if he actually thought you were a killer.... he wouldnt have given you ammo.......

not everything always means something.......plus, you got some free ammo...whats to complain about?

Who's 'y'all', this whole time it's just been been me and the OP :D

About that point, I never let that sort of thing get to me. Hell, I lived at an apartment where the maintenance guy's a former Ranger with a few tours of Iraq under his belt, and we'd joke about it mutually all the time.

I think he was just trying to be humorous about it.

Careful what you say. To some "Being the only active shooter on staff" has an entirely different meaning. <g>

I hate nicknames and snark remarks like that, there rude and disrespectful. Used to work with a guy that called me "Mr Magoo",thought he was hilarious. I put up with it for a while then it was getting old. Had a talk with my manger about it and was hit with "your a baby can't take a joke" the usual. One day I got the "Mr Magoo" name and I lost it.
Told him if he called me that once more I would report him to HR for harassment and get him fired The look on his face was the "Oh <deleted> I think I got a problem. After that he gave me a very wide berth.

Cryogaijin,

That is unusual for no one else on the staff to be an active shooter, even in Los Anchorage...

All kidding aside, while it might have been tongue-in-cheek, you may want to say something to the guy, in private, and off the record, if possible. It seems pretty disrespectful of the supervisor to an employee, and really disrespectful from one person to another...Unless maybe it was in a WWII film, then maybe...

I agree he was making light of your being a shooter, but calling you killer does not make light of it but instead casts a dim, dark shadow over your sport.

Take him aside and ask what would he do if he saw a grizzly bear about to kill another human being and he happened to have a gun in his hands and he happened to know how to use it.

If the guy says "well, I would shoot the bear!"

Say to him, "in other words you would KILL the bear -- that makes you a killer, then, correct?" Tell him just so he knows that you know where you both stand with this "killer-business" and that it is positively Nothing to joke about or take lightly!

I wouldn't consider him calling you a "killer" worthy of response. I'd just remember that he has that type of attitude. It never hurts to know where you stand with folks.

Hey Cryo, are you at the one off of Benson, side that, really, killer, I would have just smiled and said--
"bet your happy I'm on your side..."

Maybe he's a Jerry Lee Lewis wannabe...

Seriously, some people have no issue with taking kidding to an inappropriate level.

Extremely disrespectful? Dim, dark shadow? Nah.
Hack and unfunny? Yeah.

Realistically there shouldn't be an issue at all, the manager was supporting our sport by giving him ammo.

I'd take a few jokes at my expense for some ammo any day of the week. It seems we sometimes get out of hand with the sensitivity and need for positive reinforcement. If they didn't like or have an appreciation for OP's shooting, they would have disposed of the ammo in another fashion. Consider it a blessing and move on, no harm was meant.

I'm just curious why a hotel has 2/3 of a box of ammo just sitting around on a shelf. Is there a story there?

it's alaska...
could have been left behind in a room, though you would be fool to take it into the woods for anything big.

On post #2, Taurus Rage.

I'm interested in loading for a 3"x3" Judge, in .45 Colt, but using .444 Marlin brass, at 3" OAL. What would you suggest, #2, as a starting load, pushing 250gr of copper ball and discs, with a disc at final crimp? I'd call it a bear-stopper, but have yet to evaluate any other opinion. Can anyone help out here? Thanks. DAO.

Killin'

I followed a truck for a while on the highway headed home a couple of days ago.

Big ol' truck, crew cab, lift kit, mud, camo.

Sticker in the window on back of the cab: I KILL ELK.

Somehow, I couldn't bring myself to doubt that.

I wonder if he has to put up with people calling him killer. And I wonder if they do so out of admiration. This bein' the Inland Northwest and all.

Girl, actually. Only 2 men work in my hotel (And a bunch of boys. . .)

If he meant 'killer' in the sense of 'hunter', then I wouldn't consider it an insult.
More like she was searching for a good term. As pointed out already in this thread, there is no real good way to say "shooter" without some sort of negative connotation. I do FAR more target shooting than I do hunting, and I frequently claim to be a paper-murderer. (paper is my enemy!)

Me too, and this was from someone that is only a half step up from my position anyhow. I consider her more coworker than boss, tbh. I teased HER about it, honestly.

Its Alaska. They were left behind in a room.

hough you would be fool to take it into the woods for anything big.
.38spl works great on two-legged deer.

I wouldn't have expected such ignorance from someone living in Alaska.
Alaska isn't some mystical place where everyone is all enlightened about firearms. I've had three different conversations in the last two weeks about how various of my coworkers think guns should be illegal, and everyone should have Tranq guns. When I point out that any quantity of anesthesia sufficient to stop someone instantly is more likely to be fatal than a handgun shot, they think I'm crazy.

Yet I'm the one with the Emergency Trauma Tech cert, and they don't even have CPR. . .

Meh.
