I'm usually an iron sight shooter but I'd like to do some barrel break in and initial load development this fall on a new Rem 700 SPS Varmint using a scope. I've no previous experience with scope mounting. I do have a Burris 3-9*40 with med and high Weaver type rings available.

What would you suggest for a "don't break the bank" scope base? What are the advantages of 1 piece vs 2? I'll probably be mounting a Redfield sight set and restocking over the winter so the base will be used only temporarily (hate having an unshot gun in the safe while the weather is still reasonable!!)

Thanks in advance.

Leupold makes some affordable, quality bases. 1 peice bases give you the option of bedding, for stress free scope mounting:)

EGW make a Picatinny rail base for the 700. $29.95 I think was the price.
Pretty nice piece.

My brother like 2 pc over 1 pc. He is more into hunting.
I like the 1 pc. I am more into targets. The 1 pc probably offers a little more range of adjustment front to back, if needed.

Weaver bases and rings will work adequately well, and will be the most affordable solution that works well. If you are only using the mount for temporary service I would go this route (should be available at WalMart IIRC). Personally I don't favor the looks of the Weaver mounts, so I would avoid it for long-term service, and instead opt for something like Leupold bases and rings. For general hunting use I tend to use the 2-pc. base because it is slightly lighter and looks a bit better IMO, but for target use or long range varmint hunting I feel the single pc. base (preferably a P-rail in this instance) is the way to go. It also has the side benefit of being able to shim the base as needed to gain a bit of elevation. On either I like the dual dovetail design better than the "standard" design with windage adjustment in the rear.

:)

A lot depends on what caliber you are shooting.
Standard cases such as 06 based rounds, anything will do, when you get into the magnums you will want something stronger in a 1 piece base.

Thanks much for the comments ... gotta peruse the (confusing and slow) Midsouth website to see what I can add in to my current order before they ship it.

It's a 308, 26" barrel - I intend to end up with an iron-sighted XTC gun as a break from the run of the mill ARs.

Canuck,
If you would please post some updates when you get your iron sights on I'd appreciate it. A Pic rail would allow you to swap to a rear sight that is Pic/Weaver. Plus you could modify it to take stipper clips.
I have the same rifle & same interest.
