I just purchased a slightly used Savage 10fp McMillan in .308 and need some help finding a scope for it. I plan on using this setup for shooting 100 to 1000yds.

I am looking for something that fits the following description.

$500-$600 budget
3.5-10 or 4.5-14 or comparable
Side Focus
Easily adjustable & repeatable turrets
mil dot or other ranging reticle

Is there anything out there that meets my criteria? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a lead on a Leupold Vari-X III Long Range (30mm tube) 4.5x - 14x matte finish, 50mm objective, side focus, standard duplex reticle. No box, no rings, no papers, and it's up on a 700VS right now. If you're interested, it'll fit your budget.

I have seen Nikon Monarch's on special at Gander...Looked through them, and I think they are one of the best value for the money out there....Looked through the Pro-Staff too, and thought for $100 less, I did not see $100 less in quality.....
For 1000 yards, you will need something like a 6x20 zoom....

+1 on the Nikon Monarch. If you only plan on shooting on the range during daylight hours, the Prostaff would be ok. If you shoot at dusk, you will find out what the extra $100 buys.

+1 on the sample list. You can get a factory "BLEM" scope from Leupold (some type of minor cosmetic blemish) for a low price. You can get a good scope for $600.

Here's what i'd do. I'd get ahold of 1 of those Monarchs in 6.5-20X with the mil-dot reticle. Then also get ahold of the Nikon catalog that gives u the reticle subtension info. That scope is not calibrated for the milliradian measurement @ 20X. I think it's something like 12X. But the catalog gives the subtension @ 20X. Then just apply the turret's for vertical, reticle for horizontal @ the 20X subtension. This would be a pretty good system, IMO as the smaller subtension provides a finer system of reference for long-range windage.

If i'm not mistaken i think the higher power Bushnell 4200 mil-dots use a similar system.?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have found a slightly used Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/T. The price was right and I couldn't pass it up.

Thanks,

For mounts, I'd suggest Burris Zee rings with the .020 offset inserts. Lowest cost way I found to get enough elevation for 1,000. Got mine thru a local dealer, but Midway has them also.

in my 1000 yard 308 i run a farrell 20 moa 1-piece base. it gets me to 1000 yards in fine fashion, but i wish i would've gone w/ a nightforce or the like. the farrell base sits a bit higher than it needs to, and is my only complaint.

The rifle I bought came with a EGW 25 MOA base. I am looking at the Burris Xtreme Tactical rings to mount the scope. What height rings should I use?

Low- .25"
Medium- .50"
High- .75"
x High- 1"
