I know we have all read the various scenarios BG at ATM, BG at convince store counter, while eating, you get the drift. All these take for granted that you can see what is going on all during the encounter, but… for those of us with glasses, N contacts a lot of extra stuff can go wrong like lost, messed up glasses / shifted contacts.

So here it is BG is at one of the above and you just had a big glob of sweat goop up your glasses, your contacts shifted, for the rest of you something is obscuring your vision, maybe the sweat hit your eye’s and is burning so bad you can no longer see. My point is your vision is compromised; blurry at best full outlines of subject are obvious of just who and what they have cannot be fully defined here. So what is the plan B for this situation, hide… what if you have been made by the BG so now what next?

I need more information before I can give a response.

Regardless of where I am or what I am doing, I need to know if the BG is a direct threat to me, or if the BG is a direct threat to somebody else I need to know how far away that somebody else is from me.

I am not a cop, and I don't want to be one. I'm old, overweight, and have a handful of medical problems that prevent me from gymnastic contortions or moving a more than the proverbial snail's pace. Moving as fast as I can, I can draw from concealment & get a standing shot off in about 3 seconds and can put a 3-5 inch group in a swinger target out to about 15 yards.

Given my limitations, why am I thinking about engaging the BG except as a good witness?

stay safe.

First Duty

Regardless of the macho hype you see frequently read, your first and only real duty is to insure that you and yours survive an emergency. To that end, I spent a lot of years in glasses and contacts, and I can understand the logic of your question from a very real world perspective. I no longer have this problem because my dear wife paid for Lasik on my birthday last year.

My maximum distance where I could reliably distinguish shoot-no shoot targets without my lenses was 20 feet in GOOD light. The good part was my front sight was well within this distance so I could aim at the offending blur very effectively. You should know your maximum distance for yourself. If that distance is arm's length, then plan accordingly or get your eyes fixed.

Part of living in Condition Yellow is identifying escape routes, cover, and concealment around you. If I become aware of something bad going down in my immediate area, I will gather my family and make for the nearest exit post haste putting myself between them and the BG.

Rule 4 states that you must be sure of your target and what is behind it before you shoot. If your glasses/contacts are out of commission, you cannot follow Rule 4 very effectively. If you can see well enough to know the blur is shooting at you, and you can aim your piece, you have a decision to make. Personally, if I don't have a dog in the fight, I'm going to be doing my best Jessie Ownes impression.

Well, skidmark makes some very good points about not knowing where I am or what I'm doing. If I don't, then all of a sudden my vision is severely impaired and I'm suffering from amnesia and maybe one other mental disorder. I'm in no condition to do anything but run towards the nearest exit.

Then again, not knowing the distance and who else is there kind of goes hand in hand with not being able to see properly.

Either way, the best idea is to run like hell, unless you know- not "think", know- that you can still draw and fire immediately and effectively even if you can't see to save your life.

If you're alone, run. If you've got charges, get them to run first.
