Welcome to the September Rimfire Match! It is going to be a "short session" match as we only have three weeks to compete in this month (due to the overrun last month). This one is open to any and EVERY 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including 22 Mag, 17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag. This match is meant to be challenging and FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

You may, and are encouraged to, enter with multiple rifles.

There is Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 50yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles)
Please note the change in distance this month! Both Divisions/Classes are shot at 50yds to make it a little more interesting.

Target Class can be shot from any position, Sporting Class is shot from any position without a rest or sandbags. When you are satisfied you've done your best post (or shoot me a PM) a photo of your target for scoring with the following information. The Targets Will Be Included (or linked) Below...

Target: 50/100Yd. Target- 5 shots total; Scored as marked (back-up copy available here).

Scoring Guide Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before October 1st, 2010.

LOL!! Cool target.

I'm thinking this will be tougher than it looks...

Picked up a little Taurus PT-22 pocket .22 semi-auto pistol the other day, and since I intend to carry it as a backup to my normal defensive pistol, I figured I had better at least shoot the KS concealed carry qualification course with it to make sure I could actually hit reliably with it. I needn't have worried - kept all 25 rounds (5 @ 3 yards one handed, 10 @ 7 yards freestyle and 10 @ 10 yards freestyle on the FBI Q target) in the head area. Need 18 of the 25 somewhere in the scoring zone to qualilfy.

Since I was already going to be at the range, I took the Anschutz 1451ST with the scope mounted on it along with a handful of those "Black Death Challenge" targets in case the rifle range wasn't busy (everybody and his brother sighting in their rifles to get ready for deer season in a couple months).

They have one lane set up specifically for left handed shooters and it wasn't busy so I got a chance to shoot the BDC target at 50 yards. I tried it at 100 but I must have drunk too much coffee and had trouble keeping from cutting the black on the 1/2" target even from the bench rest.

Since all the divisions are being shot at 50 yards anyway, I re-zeroed the scope for 50 and shot a couple targets. The first one had 4 in the middle and one flyer, cutting the black - lower right. I came up 1 click on the elevation and shot another target. LUCKY!!! all 5 in the white of the 1/2" circle and the dot gone so I call 50 - 1X.

I know someone will beat me, but I'm probably not going to get back to the range this month as I'm probably going to have to make a trip up to Wheaton, MN for an aunt's funeral.

Anyway, I done what I could for this one. BTW, that target WAS NOT shot with the PT-22 - Entry is for Target Class with magnified optics - BSA Sweet 22 3-9 X 40 set to 9X on an Anschutz 1451ST entry level target .22. Dang glad I was able to shoot this one indoors, as ANY wind at all will make that little 1/2" circle almost impossible at 25 yards, let alone 50!

Now that's cheatin'...I'll have to set up a special division for indoors folks...100yds, over shoulder using a mirror sounds about right. :p

Thank you both for joining in, and fantastic shooting.

:)

KSC - indoors or out, that's basically amazing!

And next time, please have another cup or two of coffee. We'll buy. ;)

Condolences on the loss of your aunt.

Now, that's just plain outstanding! Once again, you've set the bar extremely high with some hellatious shooting!! Good job.

I'm going to have fun trying to match that without shooting up all my ammo... :D

Thanks guys,
That Anschutz 1451ST is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, regardless of caliber. I traded a Sig Mosquito .22 handgun even for the rifle, put one of those cheap BSA scopes on it and then went hunting for a good micrometer peep sight/globe front for it. Daisy Avanti air gun sights cost under $100 bucks and they work really well, but I certainly know better than even try the BDC with opens at my age and eyesight -

Heck that's why I put optics on both my mil-surp rifles - iron sights are just too fuzzy to my eyes any more.

If'n youse guys don't beat me this month, it's all Heavies fault. He's the one that picked the target -- :p It is a challenge, even indoors. I went through 5 sheets before I got lucky on the one I posted. Between the little Taurus handgun and shooting the match target, I only had 30 or so rounds left out of a box of 325 Federal "Target Grade" .22's from Walmart. Fortunately they are a heck of a lot cheaper to shoot than even my 7.62X54R or 8X57 handloads.

I figured I'd go first this month and then wouldn't have to play catch-up later - good luck to everyone, and I passed the PDF file on that target on to the indoor range owner. He's going to have a bunch printed off and available to the guys that want to try it.

I appreciate you spreading the word. Wishing you good travels, and condolences on your loss.

Wow! Great shooting. Got some work to do Now. I'm gonna try to get out this Sunday.

Don't shoot the messenger. Hehe:neener:

I just printed off the targets and man is this one going to be tough, especially shooting in the wind.
I'm going to give it a try next week

Good luck, KSCCHTrainer has set the bar high.

:)
Hey, don't let my target throw you off or stop you from enteringl. I was shooting a precision, scoped, Anschutz target rifle on an indoor range and I don't think my target should be judged against the non-target/sporting class rifles. That ain't fair to them. There are a few guys out there with Kimber's that have outshot me and this rifle in the past and they DID it outdoors. I only have an indoor range available to me within reasonable driving distance of my house. If I had a local place to shoot outdoors, I'd rather do that anyway. Much better lighting and I might even be able to use my iron sights beyond 25 yards.

That said, I'll donate 50 cast bullets of your choice from the following list to the first person that outshoots me this month with Maverick223 as the judge.

I can cast either 158 grain semi wadcutter (.358) for 38/357, .200 grain round nose in .452 for .45ACP, 175 grain .312 gas check for Enfield or Mosin Nagant rifles or 205 grain .323 or .325 gas check for 8mm Mauser. They will be cast from hard wheel weight lead and tumble lubricated with Lee liquid alox. The gas checks will be Hornady 30 or 32 caliber if I have any left when the bullets are cast, or home made from .014" aluminum flashing if I'm out of the commercial ones. The 32 caliber .014 aluminum home made checks shoot more accurately on bullets out of my 8mm rifle than the commercial ones do.

KS,

Well that's awful generous of you -- and who can't use extra bullets to shoot, but hey - good is good.

I can't imagine not playing cause you shot a great target. It's up to each of us to get there or better!

On another note, while equipment doesn't make the marksman, I've kinda wanted an Anschutz since I got rid of a Mauser 201 a few years back. Your fine shooting has rekindled that burn and I'm seeing a sporter, HB in my future... :D

I don't in any way mean that anyone shouldn't shoot (I would love to see the entire membership of THR participating), or post the results (good or bad). I make it a point to demonstrate my mediocre skills every month (last month was a fluke).

Thank you for supporting the match by adding a prize and your continued participation! BTW; you really must disclose how you make those gas checks, I might be interested in doing likewise should I decide to cast (I have been considering it, but don't know if it is worth the initial cost and time).

:)

I'll be shooting mine with Iron Sights, ought to be a real challenge.
Alot of ammo and targets:)

I didn't mean to imply that anyone shouldn't shoot this match either. They are fun and any excuse to get out and burn up a little ammo is always a good thing :)

I have a 32 caliber gas check making die that I purchased from a member over on another forum - http://castboolits.gunloads.com/ . He goes by the forum nickname Patmarlins and he has a small machine shop that makes things like that for the shooting community. His website is at www.patmarlins.com.

There's another guy or two that make check making dies as well, but as far as I know (not disparaging anyone) Pat's the only one that's not marketing exclusively through eBay. As anti-gun as eBay has proven to be, I just can't get too enthusiastic about purchasing reloading equipment/supplies through them.

Right now, the only gas checks I make myself are the 32 caliber ones I use for the 8mm (8 X 57) Mauser, but I plan on picking up another die set in 30 caliber as soon as I can afford it. They run about $80 or so per set with shipping. Here's a picture of some of the aluminum gas checks and one of the 205 grain .323 diameter 8mm bullets wearing one. The little brass one that looks sort of like a miniature bottle cap was made from .005 brass shim stock just to see how they would come out. The die set will make checks out of copper, brass or aluminum in thicknesses from pop/beer can material thickness up through about .014 or so.

Thanks for the information, KSCCHTrainer. That may come in handy if I decide to move forward with casting (would likely be mostly .458cal. and perhaps a little .375cal. and .308cal. FWIW).

:)

KSC - thanks for the incentive. I'd love me some 8mm for my Mauser! :)

I'll be trying!! P51D

Well...

Got out yesterday... Couldn't get five in that little target to save my life let alone get one tiny little one-hole group!

Sunny, nice day, a little breezy - but sheesh!! My last two trips to the range have been frustrating lessons in inconsistency. Dunno what I'm doing wrong either. :banghead:

Rifle is not bedded or anything, just torqued action screws to a uniform number. Think I'll clean it and head back out next weekend.

Went to the range today.
Looks like I'll set this month out, my eyes cant see that small of a target at 50 yds with iron sights
I did manage to put 5 in the largest one but cant see any of the others
See ya next month guys:)

Mav,
You might want to re-adjust iron sight range for this particular target.

That half inch circle (10 point ring) is difficult enough with 9 power optics at 50 yards and like Orlando's comment about not seeing it, even with peep sights most people will have trouble seeing the smaller targets without magnified optics.

Challenges are nice, but ya gotta see the target to be able to hit it!

Forgot to mention - thanks for all the condolences concerning my favorite aunt. However, she's a tough old bird and while all of us thought we were going to lose her, she has pulled out of it for now and has actually gained a bit of weight.

Most of my cousins live a lot closer and can visit her often, but it's an 11 hour drive for me and I have to be content with email, phone calls and photos.

She's doing a lot better for now, so hopefully the scare is over for a while.

Jim

Glad to hear your Aunt is doing better

Yes I think the iron sights range should be 25 yds.
It will still be a challenge with the smaller targets
