Independence Month Rimfire Match

All I do is wipe off the outside of the rifle with a oily rag and put away.
If I wasnt going to shoot for a few months I would wipe out the bore but I am shooting several times a month

The wax coating on the ammunition is enough to preserve the bore if you shoot somewhat frequently. There is no need to oil the barrel, and it probably does deteriorate accuracy for the first few rounds.

:)

Shot with a CMP Mossberg M44, iron sights, 50 yards. Please call me on the scores if I got anything wrong.

Target Class (Cardboard rifle box as front rest) 95

Not the best but I don't consider it too bad, I think I had trouble keeping my aim point a few times when I had it rested hence the vertical stringing.

KSC and Orlando - I've heard about the "don't clean it until it shoots poorly" plan from a few different sources. When you say you don't clean them, do you mean you just put them back in the rack/safe/cabinet when you're done? I can't yet bring myself to do that, for fear of rust in the bore, so I feel compelled to run an oiled patch down the bore. Am I worrying too much?

P51D,
I mean don't clean or oil the bore. As Maverick said, the wax lube from the bullets is apparently sufficient to keep the bore from rusting. I do, however, clean the action with Break Free CLP and also wipe down the outside exposed metal after every outing before putting it in the cabinet.

Haven't been doing this for long enough to set a trend yet, but if I don't get to shoot it for a while, say a month, I plan on running an oily patch through the barrel once. I'll then pull the bore snake through to wipe out the oil next time it comes out to go to the range and I'll probably have to put a box through it to foul it again before it will shoot good.

Well I tried it again, and despite the fact that I couldn't best my score very much (if at all), it was good practice. The following photo shows the results, the first target was a 97 or 98 (hard to tell, so lets call it a 97), the last one a 98. I was pretty pleased with the old 10/22 (though it is in the target class because of the use of a bipod rest).

Thank you all for participating, and keep those submissions coming (well for the next 40min EST - 3:40 PST). I have a family reunion tomorrow (and quite a bit of traveling to get there), so forgive me if it is late before I tally the results.

:)

Good shooting, Mav! Thanks for running the match.

And Orlando, KSC, and Mav, thanks for the "no-clean" tips.

This month's match should be up and running here shortly, please post a few targets if you have something in mind. Unless there is an objection, lets plan to go back to 25-50yds this time around.

Just to clarify so I feel better, I was shooting 50 yards, non magnified irons, so I don't think I actually placed anyway. Thanks for the benefit of the doubt though.
