September Rimfire Match (Short Session):

Sorry for neglecting yawl for the past couple of days, been super busy.

KSCCHTrainer, glad to hear that you received good news, and I hope your aunt continues to improve.

If everyone is in agreement I have no problem changing the iron-sight division to 25yds. I just don't want to change anything up if someone has already shot it and done well. My only motivation this time around was to see an apples to apples comparison, but that can wait...i'm not looking to make it impossible, only interesting. BTW: if it is agreed upon, I will post a notice in large bold print, as I cannot update/edit the OP without the help of a Mod.

:)

Hey Mav dont change it just because of me. I'm all up for a challenge .
Take that target outside pace off 50yds and I think you will see what I mean.
I think we had this problem one other time that the targets were to small

I did and I see exactly what you mean (or I guess you could say that I didn't see what you mean ;))...my vision doesn't help, but even still I can see the challenge even with the best vision and sights. At the very least it greatly limits the sporting class, iron-sight shooters; that being the case, I am more that willing to change it, unless there is a big outcry not to do so.

:)

Figured with my mediocre shooting I'd be doing good to hit the 1 ring even twice, but gave it a shot today. 22LR CMMG M4ergy with my brand new Bushnell Timberline 2x - 7x that I'd just got in and zeroed Sat.

I actually nicked the 5 ring once, however my other four shots were out there and as the wife was quick to point out it says in the fine print "target void if any shots hit the black" ... so guess all mine were zeros. Oh well, I had fun shooting bullseyes at 50 yards and midget silhouettes at 100 yards.

Okay, so here are three I managed to shoot over the weekend:

1 - Unlimited, peeps, bench, 25 yds, Kimber 82G

2 - Unlimited, scope, bench, 50 yds, Kimber 82G

3 - Sporter, peeps, prone, 25 yds, Mossberg 44

Was unable to keep 5 in the white with my scoped Ruger 10/22 sporter.

This was a tough challenge, espcially in position. Handed out targets to a few of the folks at my club and had no takers - those little white areas are intimidating!

Interestingly, I wasn't spraying flyers this week. Had not been cleaning per recommendations and probably had 150+ rounds through the scoped 82G. Cleaned the barrel and the flyers stopped. It was also a calmer day so I'll experiment to see if it was the cleaning or the wind.

Very good job shootr. I am having problems with accuracy with my Kimber. Used to be able to get then under a nickle at 50 yds, now I cant do it at 25.
Rifle is clean and am using the same ammo, not sure what the problem is

Thx Orlando. Last w/e I was struggling.

Have you changed anything? Checked, retorqued your action screws? Checked the crown with a magnifying glass? Gotten a new batch of ammo? Are you gauging / sorting your ammo?

Same ammo , same lot number Wolf Match, nothing has changed
I havent had the action out of the stock since I got it.
I dont have a torque screwdriver to check the screws.
Out of curiosity how many pounds, front and rear screws the same?
I even tried a few rds of Lapua Center X and still didnt group worth a darn

Hmmm... I bought a cheapie girder torque wrench and torque to an indicated 30 inch pounds. I haven't experimented with different torque values, but think the best thing is to just have both the same.

Has the rifle been exposed to high humidity or moisture? Can there be some pressure somewhere along the action or barrel due to warpage? FWIW, I've sealed mine with tung oil for that reason.

Could it possibly not be the rifle. How about you or your technique. Or range conditions on the days you've shot? Are you using the same equipment - rests, etc? Has there been any change in your vision, prescriptions, etc?

Everything the same, stock has been sealed, weather is dry as a bone around here for the last 1 1/2 months.
Dont think it was me as I shot a 3/4 inch group at 100yds with my Armalite AR Target rifle the same day.
I may tear her all down and do a close inspection. Dont know what else to do.
Thanks for the suggestions

Well, hope you get it figured out soon.

I know last week was a PIA with the intermittant flyers. Went through checking all the screws, concentrating on breathing, trigger, sight picture and still was getting flyers. Shot well again after cleaning - and many say to rarely clean these things... Go figure.

It's got to be some weird little thing. We know these guns will shoot.

Front sight loosened up once on me. Couldn't figure out how that happened except through some flukey way I was handling it and/or sliding it out of the case.

Again, hope you find / fix it soon.

Oh, this Black Death Challenge target is an "interesting" one! At 50 yds I tried six targets, and on most I "died" mercifully early, but at least once agonizingly on the 5th round! And that was gunning for the 1 inch circle!! On the sixth target (last one that I had on hand), I decided to go way conservative and managed to put 5 in the 1.5" circle, and even that wasn't particularly pretty! A whopping 5 points . I may be able to get back out once more, so I'm not posting anything yet ;).

I feel the same way...but have only tried and died on the smallest two so far. It is just too darn easy to cut the black...particularly on the last shot! :banghead:

Sorry guys, I don't think I am going to make this one, but will try my hardest for the next on. Bought me a new scope and am really wanting to get it on my rifle.

Don't feel bad, Clint. I don't know that I will be able to make another outing either and my last attempt was a miserable failure (I kept cutting the black). These "all or nothing" targets are tough.

:)

If it stops raining I'm going to make a attempt tomorrow.

Iron sights, little targets not good:(
Iron sights, bigger targets good :)

True, and at least for me, in this match, the same goes for optics. :banghead:

BTW it is raining here too...been that way for the past couple days, before which it hadn't rained in about 1.5mo. (not exaggerating). At this point I am just hoping the monsoon season ends before the close of the match.

:)

Getting ugly here too. Glad I got out week before last. It's Fall and we're headed toward Winter.

Results are in:

Magnified Optics Division
Unlimited Target Class:
1st: shootr (50-2x)
2nd: KSCCHTrainer (50-1x)
Sporting Class:
1st: happygeek (-)

Non Magnified Division
Unlimited Target Class
1st: shootr (50-3x)
Sporting Class
1st: shootr (11-1x)

At this point we can wave farewell to the Black Death Challenge, or extend it by a week (or longer if requested). I was thinking this may help some folks that haven't had an opportunity to make it to the range, or didn't get as good of a score as desired (like myself that shot a big, fat goose egg)...what say ye? Also we need new targets for next month's match, so if anyone has any suggestions please send 'em in!

:)

Congrats to the winners and all that participated.
Looking forward to the October Match. Hopefully I have the bugs worked out of my Kimber
