I was gifted a Roselli UHC Carpenter's knife, and had my first experience with a Scandi grind. Working with this knife led me to re-think what I thought I knew about sharpening. I have since acquired two other Scandi grind knives. So now I'm looking at a couple of my flat grind blades, a small Bark River fixed blade and a Marble's Woodscraft (I think that's the model.)

When I sharpen a flat grind blade, should I lay the blade flat on the stone? Or introduce a microbevel to the edge? I sharpen with a fine carborundum stone, then two grades of Arkansas, and finish with an old stone I found in my Dad's stuff that was used to hone straaight edge razors.

Yes, I've tried the search and looked at the stickies. Any advice would be appreciated.

Introduce a micro bevel to the edge.
For "scarey" sharp, a strop is in order.
A simlpe one is made by obtaining a piece of wood ( about 1&1/2 x3/4 x 12)and gluing on and trimming a piece of cardboard.

When I sharpen chisel ground blades, I do all my work on the bevel side, until the burr is raised. The burr will lean towards the flat side.

I then put the flat side down on my stone and draw the knife away from the edge. This will flip the burr to the bevel side. A final "slicing" push stroke on the bevel side should shear off the burr and leave a fine edge.

Finish on a strop (I prefer rouged leather.... )
