I need to send a shotgun barrel back to the manufacturer for repair. Since this part isn't a receiver, do I have to follow any of the normal BS one has to follow when shipping a gun, or can I just throw it in a box and send it from the local post office? TIA for any info anyone can give.

Pack it and mail it. I'd advise insurance.

You could mail the entire shotgun to the manufacturer for repair and he could mail it directly back to you.

The restrictions on mailing are on pistols (can be mailed by FFLs only) and ammunition (not mailable, has to go UPS Ground or similar).

when I shipped a barrel UPS, they advised strongly to strap it to a board before boxing, otherwise it is subject to "bridging" and can be bent. If it is not strapped to a board, at least UPS (not sure of FedEx or USPS) is going to fight any ins. claims. Or so I was told at the counter.

and remember not to lie on the insurance form, or it's just like throwing your money away, as they will not be obliged to cover it.

This is a 590A1 barrel, so I don't think that'd be much of a problem.

when I shipped my barrel, it was in a cardboard shipping tube at first. when doing the insurance and I had to declare what it was and how much it was worth (it was a half octagon, BPCR rifle Badger barrel worth, 650.00 cost/replacement cost) that is when the guy at the counter (it was actually a store that specialized in shipping and the guy had no vested interest in UPS/FedEX/USPS) told me that UPS would fight any claims it it was bent.

everyone will do whatever they want, but for me, all considering, is was worth it to pay a little more to ship that piece of wood than the aggravation of fighting a claim and being without the rifle for months

If durablity of the container were my concern, I'd ship it in a piece of PVC pipe, with the pipe wrapped in brown paper. The package would be light and strong.

Excellent idea. I purchased several barrels recently, and they were wrapped in bubble wrap and all stuffed in a piece of 4 inch PVC with round pieces of 3/4 inch plywood at the ends of the pipe. The end caps were screw on type so all I had to do was pull off some duct tape and unscrew the end caps.

PVC pipe? Seriously?

Any damage to the package that would bend a barrel would snap PVC like.....PVC.

Just bubble wrap and use a decent box or tube, insure for full value.
