I've been wanting to purchase a rifle case that converts to a shooting mat for the longest time. I think sitting at a bench rest is fine for zeroing a rifle, but other than that to me it's kind of a waste of ammo. Who hunts, plinks, or fights shooting from a bench rest?

I've been making due with just lying on my soft rifle cases, but this is less than optimal. Hoping someone can recommend a good quality case in the less than $150 range.

I definitely want a dual function case/mat since I'm already carrying a ton of crap up to the firing line.

Well, I did some research, and I bought an NCStar Rifle Case/Shooting Mat. I know a lot of you are going to say NCStar is crap, but every review I've read of someone who actual owned this rifle case gave it high praise, especially for the money. When I get it and give it a range workout, I'll write a quick review.

NCstar is not necessarily crap. My buddy put an NCstar scope on his Mosin. We were smart about mounting it and it holds its zero just fine. We have a lot of fun ringing a gong at 2 and 300 yds. Just know that with the cheap stuff, there is a higher probability of getting a defective sample.
I am one of those guys who likes to give a chance to cheap stuff. Often you will find a very good product for a great price.

It makes me feel especially good to buy something that ends up being exactly as good as the more expensive product.

It would be great if you did a range report with lots of pics and a good product review. That sort of thing helps the rest of us make purchasing decisions.

I have the ncstar rifle case/shooting mat - have used multiple time back and forth to the range and once for a precision rifle case
- case long enough for my 26" Winchester
- decent padding
- good hardware, no issues so far

I got the black case and it did get a llittle hot - hot enough I put towels down so I was comfortable during class - used it as a mat and tote rifle around but did not use all the extra storage inside.

Only thing I would change with purchase is color.
- brown has to be cooler
- brown has to hide dirt better, but the black case did clean up
