SHTF - What to do with the guns you can't carry?

Let's see now, I don't have any cached in Hiwiaa or Taxachusets yet so I guess I'll go put some there. Then I need to start on Canada.
If something comes up before I get a stash in every place I might go I guess I'll hunker down with them and wait right here:D

This is really a good question. I'd rather not leave my home either, but NOLA was a perfect scenario where you just might have to. Of course, if the water is up to your attic, then it's not likely your guns are going to be stolen and used against good folk, unless the looters have scuba gear.

Out of all the answers, I thing disassembling what's left and taking the bolts, barrels or cylinders is probably most practical, except that you may not have that much time.

My somewhat brief post a few days ago ("Not leaving.") was more a matter of my state of mind at the time than any real attempt to post a useful response. My regrets.

I've been in NOLA for three weeks now, working on the USACE Katrina/Rita recovery effort. The widespread nature of the destruction is unimaginable until you see it for yourself. I've mostly been working in Orleans Parish, which is mostly below sealevel and was mostly flooded. This experience has hardened my resolve to be ready for as much SHTF stuff as possible, from every possible angle: weapons, tools, food, supplies, relationships/plans with neighbors, AND, a reasonable domicile (which I fortunately have back home in Indiana).

Living below sea level is to me like not having a firearm or a spare meal in my house. Unthinkable. That's where I was coming from; trying to express that the first consideration is a secure home, in every respect. I know, I know, we have tornados and earthquake potential in Indiana. Those risks are fairly minor to the risk imposed by living below sea level.

What I really meant by "Not leaving" is that I have everything right there at home that I'll need, and I cannot improve my situation by leaving. I'm sure someone can dream up a scenario where I would need to leave, but it's gonna be a remote possibility.

My heart goes out to the victims of Katrina/Rita; we're working 12-14 hrs, 7 days a week trying to put it back together. I don't mean to be harsh, just realistic. Now, as far as the people that move back in below sealevel: good luck next time. Might be time to re-examine your approach and make some life-changes. Remember the Superbowl?

My neighbors would be the first ones I'd shoot.

Serves them right for blasting the stereo at 3 a.m.

A friend's brother went through Andrew in FL. When they came back to their house he found his gun safe (600lb with another 500lb of guns) in the front yard and the hinges torched off.

Dig hole. Place Gun safe in*. Cover hole.
*If no gun safe is readily availble a sealable 55-gallon drum will work.

That depend's.

Are we talking SHTF as in "Crap! Gotta go!" but you will be back sooner or later

Or SHTF as in "Honey what was that big boom and bright light over the city?" with an answer of "A friggin nuke grab your bag" type SHTF?

i got too many to carry, even in a truck. i would have to "blow them in place", but i shot off the last of the C4 last week killing groundhogs.

i couldn't shoot the neighbors, cause they'd get me first.

since i'm well above sea level, i guess that means i'll just have to sit tight and lock the gate.

gates are wonnerful. they make looters just like clay pigeons. there is a moment at the top of the arc when the pigeons just seem to hold still. thets when ya squeeze.

I think I have enough truck to carry them safely by myself and the girlfriend and all my gear. No Ring mounted 50, but given how many friends have said they'd show up to my house if the ???? hit the fan, I'd probably be able to hand a few out to the friends too.

Though, I've been telling those friends if they show up at my door, they better have ammo, food, fuel or medical supplies. Otherwise they're going on a scavenger hunt.

As luck would have it though, my down the street neighbor is US Army Guard so he could drive the 5 ton, while I drive the ferret. I do need to rig some sort of rifle up for the ferret that'll allow for precision fire support.

This is one situation where friends come in real handy. I like to keep a few extra rifles around to give to people I trust in a SHTF situation. It's also a good to stow rifles with people who know you or on remote property, greased, packed, sealed and hidden with a sealed tin of ammo. Not that I've done that myself :D

More guns than i can carry? I would love to have that problem! On the other hand, I load up my roll out belt, bug out bag, and grab the Mosin and CZ PO1. The loving wife gets her CZ 2075 RAMI, and the Yugo SKS with Chinese ammo bra and bug out duffle. The boy gets to carry a toy bag with a few essentials thrown in - 5 year olds can't carry much or walk far....guess we'll just "bug in", unless we absolutely have to leave.

ive thought about this before. I have decided over it well. The mossberg 500 with a pistol grip will go to me because its the most difficult to control with no gun experience. Even though it produces a wider shot pattern than a rifle, it would still take practice to handle accurately. The kel tec sub will go to my mother or little brother if they needed it. The sks to my dad or little brother. depending on the situation. I only have 3 guns. If I had more, and they werent collectables or relics, I would put them in an army duffle bag throw it in the car and go. If I were on foot. I would put a rifle on my back and a smaller weapon in my hands.

Ya Me Niether;)

Sort by commonality. A Swiss Rubin or Swedish Mauser are fine rifles, but the likelihood of finding ammo "in the field" is going to be low. Their ammo runs out, and they two of the most finely crafted clubs of the XXth Century. like my Mosins, but they're probably in the same category. Use them at home until the ammo runs out. 7.62X39 is a bit more common, so I take the SKS. The .22s never leave my side. Etc.

Unless I've got caches all over the countryside. But no cash, so no caches.

If it's minor SHTF I sit tight, major SHTF then my "standard" caliber guns go with me others are secured off site underground.

Jeez, just because some of my neighbors may be complacent and/or ignorant doesn't mean I wouldn't trust them to watch my back after a quick lesson in operating a Remington 870 or a Ruger 10/22. I can't stop a determined group of thugs from looting or torching my apartment building by myself, you know.

Fortunately I know at least four of the nine apartments here contain firearms and owners who know how to use them. It helps to talk to your neighbors every once and a while.

Yep. You have to sleep some time. It would depend on the neighbors though. I wouldn't trust mine watching my back. I doubt that they would shoot me with my own guns, but backed into a corner I would prefer a small group of prior service people over most anyone else. My own experience working nights tells me that these people are the most likely to be disciplined enough to stay awake and that they will tell you if they are having trouble.

i've an opinion you won't like..

and it sort of goes along with the one about if you carry, carry full time. (the which seems like I didn't invent that idea) ..

if you own a weapon you CANT carry.. sell the weapon or buy a bigger vehicle.

seriously. you are SO RICH you can own stuff you can't protect? hmm.

not talking stashed weapons. talking about abandoning weapons due to lack of forethought or simple over acquisition.

think it through. that value could be medical supplies, fuel, a cache of (whatever) located (whereever)..

it's not sillier to have spare weapons without a plan for em than to have spare hand loomed rugs.. and not smarter, either.

how's about you rethink entirely if you need em?

And if so, make preps to have em.

Less is some more of that optimism stuff. IMO. let the flames begin..

If you really want to carry more gear than your car can handle get a trailer

any car can pull a trailer I have a hyundai accent and i pull my buddies 17.5' aluminum boat all the time i have a trailer for my kayaks too.

if you have money and a big truck buy a nice utility trailer and a handtruck and wheel all your stuff on the trailer and then cover it with a tarp

if your like me and dont have a lot of money buy a USED jetski trailer remove all the jet ski hardware then get a piece of ply wood and cover the metal frame

i converted a jetski trailer 2 carry my 2 kayaks

you could easily put a 10 or 20 gun case on the trailer and another 2 or 3 hundred pounds of stuff on no prob

when i pull my buddies boat i get 26 mi per gallen instead of 32

oh after the SHTF U haul won't be needing all those nice trailers either
bolt cutters and keep some a 1 7/8" and a 2" tow ball in your vehicle
wait three weeks before you leave dodge by then a lot of people will have left
one way or the other
